Customer Questions & Answers

After cleaning the deck, how long should we wait before applying this stain?

Asked by: sft
Hello sft, We appreciate your question. There's no set time to wait after cleaning, as it can take hours or a few days depending on the weather. Basically, we'd want the surface to be fully dry to the touch after cleaning. Well wishes for your project! -Joshua

Can SC-210 be colored to Ultra Pure White 5010

Asked by: Confused
Hello Confused, Thanks for your question. Our Premium Solid Color Weatherproofing Stain can be tinted to Ultra Pure White (SC-210). Please note that our No. 5010 base has been discontinued, and for this white color you'd need the No. 5011 base. Best wishes for your project!

Primer Needed?

In both of the stains I just bought (ultra white and russet), it states in the Overview, "Self Priming". In Specifications, under Details, it states, "Primer Required". Which is it?
Asked by: derputz
Hello derputz, Great question, and sorry for the confusion. Actually, this product is self-priming, and a primer is normally not needed. A primer would be needed when the wood type has a tendency to bleed (for example, cedar, redwood, and cypress woods), or if there are medium to heavy stains or discolorations that need to be sealed (rust or mildew stains, for example, once rust or mildew residues are removed). Best wishes for your staining!

Coverage over dark stain

I just used Behr Solid Color Redwood SC330 on a fence and don't like it. Too orange. Can I use SC210 ultra pure white solid color over it? Will it cover in one coat? Will the redwood color bleed through at some point? The big project is our large, elevated deck and its railing. Want to do the deck in solid color russet and the railing in ultra pure white. The deck and railings were stained 6 or 7 years ago with Thompson's stain/watersealer, but both are really worn. Will the ultra pure white cover OK on these railings as well? One coat?
Asked by: LarryB
Hi Stuck, Thank you for your question! Yes, you can use this product over your existing paint. The number of coats will vary. Please make sure that the surface is properly prepared and cleaned, following all label instructions.

Customer Reviews

1 gal. #SC-210 Ultra Pure White Solid Color Waterproofing Stain and Sealer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 141.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has A Serious Issue I have purchased 50 or so gallons of this product over the last 7 years to weather proof our home on Hatteras Island, NC. My experience has been that vertical applications hold up very well, but horizontal applications do not fare nearly as well, requiring repainting every 2-3 years. The product does not stain treated exterior lumber, rather it forms a coating on top of the wood surface, even when heavily sanded. The hard rain and the marine climate, plus staining of the paint by leaves and soil residue, deteriorates the surface and the coating peels off. This does not happen on vertical surfaces, even using the same lumber. And this product is expensive in the iniitial purchase, not to mention the frequent applications. I am now considering using a UV resistant epoxy paint instead for better adhesion. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old fence looks new again!! We had a fence that was in decent shape structure wise but the color was so faded and gray it made the whole backyard look gross. I wanted to stain it, and found this product - it goes on like paint and covered the fence perfectly with a sprayer. We used the dark chocolate color on the fence. Looks amazing and brand new. Would recommend to anyone!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still going strong Behr Premium was applied to a 25 year old deck. This was the first solid color stain applied. Previous semi trans stains were applied every three to five years. The Behr Premium has been on for four years and still is solid, not pealing and washes clean with a hose. Very pleased with this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't make it through one winter Bought this product, as well as the pre-washes. Followed all of the instructions for washing, drying, and coats to a T. After our first winter, spring comes around and now everything is peeling. It also warped many of our boards. I would not recommend. 10 years must really be a stretch, as we didn't even make it 10 months... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed! We used this product on our new deck last year. It is know peeling ion all the traffic areas. We brought this because it states 10 years on decks! So much for that! Very, very disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stain / wood sealer I've used I have gone through 9 gallons painting old, dried, cracking fences that have been neglected for years. I can definitely see a major improvement to the wood after being sealed and treated with this stain/sealer. The completed sections look so different from the untreated sections. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Solid color stain sucks I painted my home with behr solid color stain three years ago, within a year it was peeling off. I have spent this entire summer sanding every bit of this off of my home in preparation to repaint it with a quality product. I'll never buy behr again!
