There are a lot of variables. Is the existing surface chalky? Mildewed? Peeling? Dirty? Are you going to Pressure Clean? Ask the people in the paint section.

Hi Rita,
Good question! There are many different types of primers including specialty primers formulated for specific purposes. Primers are most often used for the following reasons:
1) Blocking Stains: Covering stains with coat of paint will not prevent the stain from eventually bleeding through the paint film and reappearing at the surface. Primers with stain blocking properties such as Behr Exterior Multi-Surface Primer and Sealer #436 will "lock in" the stain in the primer coat so it will not bleed through the paint film.
2) Sealing Porous Surfaces: Porous surfaces will absorb paint, making the final finish look uneven and blotchy (and possibly requires you to use more paint!) Sealing the surface with a primer first will help promote a smooth and even surface.
3) Promoting Adhesion to Surfaces: It is difficult for paint to adhere to some surfaces, such as glossy surfaces and metals. Primers work like glue, sticking the paint film to the surface.
4) Over Patch and Repair: If you have a patched area, chances are you are applying paint over two very different materials each with different porosity. (For instance, patching compound may be denser than the surrounding wood). A coat of primer over these different materials seals the surface and provides a nice, even base for a coat of paint.
5) Changing Color: As you mentioned in your post, in some cases, using a tinted primer will save you coats of paint when making a drastic color change. "Drastic" color changes could be light to dark or dark to light or from one hue to another hue.
If you want to save the time and effort of using a primer, we recommend Behr Premium Plus Ultra Paint and Primer in One. It has been specifically formulated to block stains, seal porous surfaces and promote adhesion to properly prepared surfaces without the need for a separate primer product.

Answer:
The color of the paint you selected will determine which "base" will be used. The man that mixes your paint knows which to use for your color selection. Otherwise, there is no difference.

Answer:
If you check the label, or the "Specifications" on the Home depot website , you will find the average coverage. Surface type, texture, chips, cracks or stains will change the actual coverage you get.

Hi Ruidazo,

The reason there is a range is that the spread rate will vary depending on what you are painting. The product will go further on smooth, sealed surfaces and, as you would expect, you will need more product for rough, porous or textured surfaces. Your application tools and technique will also have some affect on the spread rate as well.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by How much paint is in a 5 gallon can? As other retailers have done, Home Depot sells paint in a 5 gallon container. But look at the quantity on the label before you buy. Some of their paints have 5 gallons. Some have 4.56 gallons. Some have 620 ounces. When I asked a manager if he knew this he said yes. He claimed that they leave room for the colorants to be added. I asked if any paints needed 0.44 gallons of colorants and he shrugged his shoulders. I wish I had asked him how much WHITE paint is in a 5 gallon can. Don't forget to check the 1 gal. cans too. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Paint will outlast the deck 8 years ago We built a large surround deck and used the Berh exterior flat on it. Our area has weather from 30 below to 110 above and I didn't think anything had a chance on the deck. The weather has taken a toll on the wood but not the paint. After fixing the few broken pieces I'm using the deck over from Berh as the paint proved it would outlast Mother Nature now I need to make sure the deck does. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wouldn't Even Consider Any Other Paint I've used this paint for my wooden fences, for my garden shed and for one of our garages that was converted to a wood shop. It applies great and really DOES cover in one coat-even when painting a lighter color over a dark burgundy fence. My garden shed looks fabulous, my fence is still looking great 2 years later, even in the hot Texas summers. It cleans up really easily, too. Excellent paint. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exterior House paint I bought two cans of this paint to do the back of my home. I choose this paint because of its ability to cover imperfections and it had good reviews. I was able to finish the backyard walls in one day, starting early in the morning and I was finished by noon. I had already prepped the windows and doors the day before so all I had to do was wait for the temperature to get high enough for the dew to dissipate. I started on one end of the house and my husband was working the other end and this paint covered wonderfully. I would recommend if you need an exterior paint that you use this one. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by First time with Behr I bought this paint not really sure exactly what to expect. Paint and primer in one? One coat? Well it is all of that and more. I used it on my side entrance porch which faces south and is all wood. The porch looks amazing after just the one coat. The paint dried quickly and it was easy to clean up afterward. Thanks Behr! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mom's house My mom passed away a year ago last April. We'd always talked about painting her place, but it just never got done. Now that I'm a landlord of it, I had to do it. LOVE LOVE LOVE how it turned out and the fabulous color selections and quality of the Behr paint. I'm so glad we chose it! September 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better Exterior paint than any other brand About 8 years ago I was between jobs and decided to paint the exterior of my home (wood composite siding circa 1976). I had used Behr on most of my interior walls and felt I should use Behr for my house. I had painted a little over half of my house; the back half, and was offered a great price on a name brand product other than Behr. So the front of the house had an "other" brand on it. At about the 6 year mark I noticed the front of the house looked faded and uneven in color. Upon comparing where I switched paint the Behr still looked great, the other thumbs down. Behr is worth the money, positively for both interior and exterior! August 26, 2013
