I have planter boxes on my deck should I use this or the planter box soil?

Asked by: suki
Don't use this unless you plan to dig the surface every week to soften it. It gets hard very quickly and doesn't allow water to pass through to the plant roots

About two years ago I wrote a review on this Miracle-Gro potting mix. Originally, I transplanted large house plants. Then, since there was still alot in the bag, I started my garden seeds in the house. The seedlings grew great and did very well in the garden. Last year I bought a different brand also organic. They did poorly. The seedlings did not make it to the garden. So, I have learned a lesson. Stick with what works.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crawling with fungus gnats I expected this to be heat-treated to kill off any residual bugs etc. It was not. I couldn't figure out where they were coming from until I took a MUCH closer look at my soil when I went to plant some seeds. The soil was stored well away from where I keep my plants. I've spent nearly $20 on things to kill the gnats + lost so many seedlings and plants because they spread from my newly planted pots to my other indoor plants. In addition, unless you HEAVILY augment the soil with perlite, it's so incredibly moisture-retaining that indoor plants get mold on the soil after just a normal watering. HORRIBLE product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor drainage, lots of sticks, bugs I bought this product. First time using it the soil was so compacted and moist, I literally had to screen it to break it up. Screening also helped remove all the sticks in the soil. I ended up getting fungus knats because the soil consevers water it won't dry out causing knats. Since I added a ton of perlite and sphagnam moss to soil and haven't had issues since. Also recommend not watering soil when you repot. The soil is moist enough. Let it dry out good before you water. This will kill any larvae in the soil. The reason I still use this product is because it's the only organic option I have.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great potting mix, almost entirely organic material This is a very nice organic potting mix. It's almost entirely organic material, and seems to be comprised of peat and compost. It's light and fluffy when dry, and due to the amount of organic material in it, it will hold water well. It says it has yucca and coir in it (coir is a fiber that comes from coconut shells), but see the photos as it looks like peat. I assume all of these things will look similar when combined. My only concern about this is that I'm not sure it's worth the premium. It's definitely a very nice potting mix, but if you need a lot you may be better off mixing your own. If you just need one bag, get this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New Experience I am traditional in the use of things such as potting soil. To open this organic potting mix and see the difference in materials was interesting. I love that it is organic but noted along the way you need to use other materials as well to feed your plants, protect against bugs, etc. The best part is the water absorption - it is hard to over water your plants or if you neglect them a day of two to kill them off. It will take a few months of use to fully determine if this is something I will continue to use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fungus Gnats and Scale Infestation I had previously purchased Nature's Care Organic Potting Soil, and used it with no problems. I just purchased several bags for spring re-potting, and now have a Fungus Gnat and Scale infestation. I'm positive the Fungus Gnats are from the soil, as I still have the original packaging. I have dozens of house plants and have lost several of them, as well as my entire herb garden to these pests. I'm pretty bummed. I've attached photos of the wilted plants and scale infestation.

At first I was scared to purchase this product after I read about the gnats that were found in the soil, but I was running out of options since I had to re-pot my plant. It was either this or Miracle Gro, and this seemed to be the better option having less negative reviews. Well, I reluctantly purchased it, and I have to say that it has been a couple of weeks now, and my plant is growing beautifully and I haven't seen gnat one! I am so glad I got this soil. Since I have a lot left, I am going to buy that rubber plant I have had my eye on for awhile and if I have any soil left after that, I will buy another plant! My plant came with directions that said "let the plant dry out thoroughly" between waterings and I follow those directions to a tee and think that's why there has been no gnats. So my advice is to read the directions that came with your plant and I think you will be good to go! I think the problem may come from not letting the plant(s) dry out.
