Questions & Answers

Can you use something other than Galvinized Pipe on one of the ends?

Asked by: Jj
In theory, yes, but since galvanized has a large outer diameter as compared to its inner diameter, the resulting pipe on the other end would effectively be much larger. A 3/4 galvanized on one end would be a 1" copper and they don't exactly match so it results in an unstable union. Additionally connecting galvanized to any different metal ends up being very bad, causing reactions to occur and a resulting mineral buildup and eventual failure. PEX tubing would prevent this but it doesn't match up well at all to galvanized sizing. You would have to put a 4" stub on the other end of galvanized then connect to pex off the threaded end of that, or if you want copper you would have to put what's called a dielectric union on the end of the new stub and run from that.

I'd like to know if this can be used for a gas line as well

cause I'm using it for one now and it seems to be OK but how long will that last??
Asked by: gashelp
Hi Gashelp, I contacted the manufacture of this product to get you an answer. The manufacture stated you should not use this on a gas line and you should replace the one you are using now. You can reach the manufacture at 1-800-782-2385, ask for technical help.

Customer Reviews

3/4 in. Galvanized Iron Long Pattern Compression Coupling is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Thing Works! We were dealing with old galvanized pipe and running out of options to tie new to old and this fitting saved the day and countless hours of labor and expense. If you're ever in a situation where threads are mutilated or traditional fittings won't work, this sleeve is your chance to start over. Tip: Sand the existing pipe with some heavy grit paper to knock off any burrs or rust for maximum adhesion. Then try to keep everything in a straight line and properly supported to keep any lateral stress off the coupling sleeve to minimize the possibility of leaks. This really was a game saver.
