I'm renovating a house and when I removed the paneling there is no insulation in the exterior walls. I believe this is the right product for me to remedy this problem. My question is this - the framing isn't open between the studs. There are horizontal 2x4s nailed in multiple places that will interrupt the 'run' of the batts. See attached image. Is this still the best product to use and if so, can I push the insulation behind these horizontal boards or do I need to cut it to fit up to the board in these rectangles? Thank you!
Asked by: Marie
Yes the insulation is able to split and bent behind horizontal wood studs

how do you install it?

do you staple it in the wall?
Asked by: webjunky
It should be installed with substantial contact with approved wall, ceiling or floor covering to minimize flame spread due to the Kraft paper facing. Face stapling to the edge of the stud and crossing your fingers seems to be the safest.

Later found out that the paper facing is a flame spreader with no fire rating. I wish the manufacturer would add a flame retardant to the paper facing and make it safer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works well, smells like a trash can that needs to be emptied I've used this stuff for years. My latest batches have a huge plus & a strong negative. If you aren't aware, just know that the stink you are smelling is the insulation. I first noticed it when I installed it in and attic and then went up there days later and thought it was the plumbing vent stinking. I searched all around, retaped the plumbing vent, and eventually removed poisons from the attic. Eventually realized that it was the insulation and I knew the smell would not be in issue once I covered the insulation with drywall, plastic, or wallboard. More recently, I bought more rolls to insulate between the rooms for sound insulation. I bought a lot to get the 30% discount, and it in my entry hallway. I keep thinking I have trash I need to take out but instead it is the unwrapped R-13 insulation. I believe it is the tar that holds the insulation to the craft paper. If you don't like the stink and you don't plan to cover it you may need to use another suppliers product.

I got stuck in the online area for walls, and therefore got the wrong width. I had to cut numerous to fill the rafter space. Therefore, I strongly suggest care in ordering. The batts do a wonderful job in installing.
