This router takes any 1/4 inch shank bits. Even though it is a very powerful router, watch how big of a bit you use due to control. It will start eating out a lot of material if you let it get away from you.

Any 1/4" shank router bit, up to a certain diameter, will work on this router. This router is too small and underpowered for the really big router bits. Those big bits should only be used with table mounted routers anyway.

Could this router be used to put a 45 degree edge on deck top cap railing?

I have a deck that was built recently which was left with squared railing top caps. I would like to cut a 45 degree edge so it matches my new fence also. I thought rather than removing & cutting on a table saw I might be able to use a compact router instead?

Answer:
Rather than routing the entire rail, why not put a straight edge guide, cut each side of the rail with a power saw and then route the last few inches.
If not I would suggest using a full power router. This is a 'trim' router for finish work, not taking a 45 off 2x material.
Now if your only 45ing say a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch probably no problem, just take it easy. Were talking a small router here

Absolutely! Pick up a 45 degree chamfer bit with a 1/4" shank. You then adjust the bit up or down to get the desired amount of bevel you want. It's perfect for this type of job.

The router may be used to cut this edge however it should be done by making several passes, cutting it all on one pass may result in splitting the edge and the router may lack power to complete it in one pass. However, I would not have a problem using the compact router to accomplish the task.

Well only with a 45 bit but you would be limited to the amount of the bit. If your wanting to take a lot off this router bogs easily. I think the Bosch or the makita gives cleaner results even though the rigid says it has more horsepower . I have used all of them many times. Even better would be a larger router and not the trim routers or just removing it etc...

It's possible with a router and a chamfer bit depending on how deep you want the chamfer. However not this router. You'll need a larger one.
The best tool for that would be a circular saw

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 208 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very well built, easy one hand operation. I've never owned a compact router, and almost always go to my big kit Dewalt. I was recently building a planter box, and pulled out this router over the Dewalt. At first I thought I got a bad unit. What I did not notice is that the router plate has a smaller diameter hole for the router bits, and attempting to lower the base plate was binding on the plexi plate. I moved to a smaller OD router bit and problem solved. That is a bitter sweet issue, but with the smaller motor it makes sense to limit the size of the bit to ensure long service life on the motor. Very sturdy, and easy to raise and lower the depth. Much quieter than my larger router. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Compact router Used ones to mortise hinge seemed good would recommend October 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great size I'm in construction and I wanted a small Router to replace my old one at home. It's compact but had plenty of power to get through a wood in-lay in my Oak floor. I wouldn't do this every weekend but I'm impressed. Bottom line, I think you'll be happy. The only Cons are limited accessories and bit opening is a hair small. The latter is easily corrected. October 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice device for the money I bought this to help my son with a physics project. I've never used a router before. For the price, this did a great job. Proper wood workers may prefer something else, but for a novice like me, it was perfect. All I had to do was attach the bit, attach the rail and start. My son was able to use it after a single demonstration. It also comes with a soft case. October 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great little tool. My big router is going to collect dust... Whether you buy this router or another brand, get one of these little routers. Definitely not just for trimming laminate. Full fledged router that fits in the palm of your hand. I mostly use 1/4" bits with pilot bearing to put round-over or 45 deg on edge of board. Or shallow cuts for hinges. This little router does all that and SO much easier than balancing a heavy router, tipping and gouging the edge of your work. I chose the Rigid for the LED light, clear base plate, wide visibility and quick adjust. I almost passed because of the switch location, but having used it for 1 week, now I really like it. The switch is on top and up/down (vs. a thumb rocker) so you can easily whack the top with your hand, your hip, or whatever to turn it off. Again...don't know why I didn't buy one of these sooner. My bigger router is going to collect more dust than it's going to make. Great little unit and a full fledged power tool. May 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great router I use these as the power heads on my end router. I get excellent life. I really like that the collet is true as I do a lot of fine detail. Is there a 1/8 inch collet available? October 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product I used this router to install 8 doors over the weekend (using a hinge template). The Rigid Router was easy to control, had enough power for the job and worked flawlessly after initial adjustments. The LED light is a great idea and the dust shield is very helpful. Major downside is that this unit gets very hot, almost too hot to hold with gloves or careful hand placement on the router. The "quick release" feature is nice after you adjust it; my unit needed tightening using an 8-mm wrench otherwise the depth adjust would move (very bad b/c it will change cutting depth). Overall, I highly recommend this product unless you want to spend a little more on a more powerful, cooler running unit. The "Good" rating (vs. "Excellent") is because of the heat issue--this thing generates a lot of heat quickly. September 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid router that performs as advertised This router is a very solid router. It's built well and has plenty of power for jobs requiring a compact router. The base the router fits in is very well made, the micro adjustments work great and the build quality overall is good. The edge guide that comes with the router works great and changing bits in the router is easy. The only thing that is a little time consuming is changing the bits. I find the wrench doesn't have much room to move the nut. September 9, 2016
