Customer Questions & Answers

Asked by: MAGNUM
Ridgid has masterfully set up a slow, cumbersome process, in order to discourage customers from following through and obtain the lifetime warranty. First, following the online registration, Ridgid builds in a two-week wait process, hoping the customer forgets about the registration. Second, they notify you that your registration cannot be confirmed, hoping that you'll miss the email, or that you're too busy to jump through the additional hoops: "Unfortunately, we encountered an issue when cross referencing your product and/or proof of purchase information with our records and were unable to upgrade your products to Lifetime Service Agreement (LSA) status." Third, they demand that you send the original purchase receipt (which means you can only jump through this hoop once if they lose it), preferably by certified mail--all of this even though the product registration included the purchase code from the Home Depot receipt. There are multiple reports of this labor-intensive process throughout the reviews.

Could this router be used to put a 45 degree edge on deck top cap railing?

I have a deck that was built recently which was left with squared railing top caps. I would like to cut a 45 degree edge so it matches my new fence also. I thought rather than removing & cutting on a table saw I might be able to use a compact router instead?
Asked by: Mcgyver210
Routers are made to give you an edge on a 90-degree angle, or perpendicular to the base plate. If you had a router bit that had a 45-degree angle, then you could get an edge on a 45-degree angle.

My only complaint is the stop that prevents the base from being removed. It is much easier to change bits with the base removed. I can't see any good reason for this stop to be there, none of my other routers have this and I have never had a base fall off. I added a couple of drawer pulls for handles and this router is perfect for detail work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from EXACT same issue as @handyman123 I bought this router on sale a couple of months ago. The good: it's a great little router - time will tell how long the brushes/bearings last vs. the DeWalt trimmer I operate on my CNC machine. The bad: Exact same issue as @Handyman123 describes below - Ridgid were unable to recognize my purchase for warranty registration purposes (yet they were able to recognize/acknowledge my purchase of the Ridgid Spindle Sander I bought a couple of days later). I called the 'help'line (which was anything but), and no dice. I too own (to this point) a a number of other Ridgid products (12" mitre saw, table saw, various sanders & cordless drills), and this one experience was enough to completely turn me off the brand. No more Ridgid products for me, thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well built, easy one hand operation. I've never owned a compact router, and almost always go to my big kit Dewalt. I was recently building a planter box, and pulled out this router over the Dewalt. At first I thought I got a bad unit. What I did not notice is that the router plate has a smaller diameter hole for the router bits, and attempting to lower the base plate was binding on the plexi plate. I moved to a smaller OD router bit and problem solved. That is a bitter sweet issue, but with the smaller motor it makes sense to limit the size of the bit to ensure long service life on the motor. Very sturdy, and easy to raise and lower the depth. Much quieter than my larger router.

I bought this router to do some basic round over work on a vanity I was building out of red oak. It fits very comfortably in in the hand, and is very controllable single-handed. I'm very new to using routers, but very DIY friendly, and I found this tool to be fantasticly simple to get up and running with. I love that the power switch pulls up to start, and depresses to stop. It makes it very simple for me to use my free hand to power off the tool without having to look for the switch, I just slap the butt of the tool and off it goes. The LED light that highlights the bit and working spot is a grand idea that I didn't even know I needed until I had it! It comes in a soft carry case, which is fine, all my other rigid tools are the same - yet for some reason people still get in a fuss about this fact. Different strokes I suppose. Ultimately it's super user friendly. It has rounded all the necessary bits on my vanity which is exactly what I needed from it, so 5/5 for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent router but left wanting Bought this router with the hopes that it would live up to the standard I have come to expect from the other rigid products I own. A few issues with this router that leave it short of its competitors; 1. This thing gets hot, extremely hot after a relatively short time. 2. The adjustment, at least on my unit, is grainy and difficult to use. I tend to skip the fine adjuster and use a ruler after I se the thumb release. 3. No available plung base 4. Viewing port in the front is kind of small With that being said I feel everything else on this unit was better that the others. Slim, Mell layer out, easy to use power switxh. I wish I wish I would have bumped to a dewalt or porter cabke

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice - Except It Does Not Accept 1 3/16" Guide Bushings I really like this tool and it has worked well on a project rounding over the edge of 3/4" Baltic birch. However, I do want to make some detailed depth cuts using a template and guide bushings, but this router base's opening is 1 7/16" and standard Porter-Cable style guide bushings (the kind that are commonly available) need a smaller 1 3/16" base opening. What a bummer. What is one to do? Why not make a tool that accepts standard guide bushings like other major brands...? I really don't want to return this tool, but don't see what options I have at this point.

This router is awesome. Have only used on softer woods but it is so easy to control. I love the micro depth adjustment; wouldn't settle for a router w/o it. As I recall the Mikita at same price did not have this. Surprisingly quiet. Very light weight and very comfortable hand grip for good control and no fatigue. Round and square base plates included. Another even base plate about 3/4" would be nice to have been included. Carrying bag incl. all for under $100; can't beat it.

This is the first router I've used, and it was quite a bit easier and more intuitive than I thought it would be. So far I've mostly used it to add edge details to window sills that I replaced, though I've also used it for a couple of blind slots. One thing I would say to anyone using a router for the first time: make sure to practice on scrap wood for whatever cut you want to make before you do it the first time. The best direction for the router to travel (left-to-right, or right-to-left) seems to depend on the type of cut you make.
