Answer:
Lindsey, Rust-Oleum Rust Inhibitor Spray Paint dries to a crystal clear (non-matte) finish. A slight change in appearance may be present after applying this product. We recommend applying it in a small inconspicuous area first to ensure desired results before application to the entire project.

Rated 2.2 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by What he said... I too selected this product with the thought that it was clear coat paint...see the problem is it is stocked in the paint dept and should be next to WD40. I would recommend this over WD40 to coat tools. I used a motorcycle spray cleaner/degreaser S100 to remove instead of mineral spirits to prep for paint. June 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product-I knew it wasn't Spray Paint No where on the can does it state it's Spray Paint. When u go blindly into HD and ask for assistance, ur taking matters into ur own hands. Read what you buy. It's your own fault. This product does EXACTLY what it advertises. Works like a charm. AND IT DRIES TO THE TOUCH IN 2 HOURS. May 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Someone else misled by paint department I need to refinish three iron gates that are starting to rust. I went to Home Depot expecting to buy some clear coat for metal, but didn't see anything. So I went to the paint department and told them my application. They pointed me to this product. One of the applications listed on the back is "iron railings", so I thought that was pretty similar to a gate. Having "painted" my gates with this "spray paint", I now realize it's not a barrier paint at all. So this afternoon I get to go buy some acetone, take all this off and start over. I'm sure it's a fine product for some applications like coating shovels, but calling it PAINT is misleading. September 13, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Rust Inhibitor may not be ready for prime time but I clearly understand the low reviews, but for my needs it was recommended to use a rust inhibitor from Earthway Broadcast Spreaders, instead of rinsing off metal, and rusting, I use a damp clean cloth and will store in garage and spray as a winterizer. There are competitors online like WD Corrosion inhibitor, VHT, CRS.or LPS at ACE. But in fairness to Home Depot, thumbs up they stock this product in store. Lowes or Walmart do not have this product in store, only a rust stain remover or dis solver. But at a cost of $7 to $17 for 11 oz aerosol application vs $3.76. I'll take this product from a cost prospective from my research they are not meant to dry to touch, I think for my application this will work for me but clearly understand some of the unfavorable reviews. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fabricated Product Name Read the reviews prior to purchasing this product. It is a spray oil - NOT a paint! I sprayed it and waited for it to dry. Never happened. The product runs just like water. I left it on the metal coupling and it was already rusting the very next day after just a light rain shower. Save your money and do not purchase this product. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This is *not* paint ... I can see where somebody might be upset if they thought this was an anti-rust paint, like the regular Rustoleum spray paints. It is not. It is a spray-on anti-rust coating that sticks well to metal and provides a lubricant-style coating. It works *very* well if you're aware of what it is and how it's intended to be used. But it does *not* dry, and would not work well if it did dry. I live in an oceanfront environment and it works well in fighting salt-air corrosion. But I would *not* use it indoors or on decorative items. Works best for tools, equipment, undercoating of utility vehicles, etc. April 6, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This is Oil - Not Paint! Now it makes sense why I could not find the dry time on the can's instructions. We asked a Home Depot employee in the paint section for a clear anti-rust paint. They were very quick and knew exactly where to look, for exactly the wrong item: this can. It is not paint. Paint dries. This substance remains a liquid. We're going back for a refund and to locate something that will actually work. Let's think about this too... a picture of a shovel is on the can? The instructions indicate you only have to protect what you spray every 6 to 12 months. So if you have some tools you only plan on using once or twice a year, this is your product! This "spray paint" works great for things you do not intend to touch or even use. October 18, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Despite the title, this is NOT paint! Misleading. Like others, I thought this would provide a transparent, water-resistant coating. it's not!! This does not dry! I can see the applications for it, but it should not be in the paint section. Nor should HD market it as such! It applies an oily covering similar to WD40. Smells like it too. Ugh!! August 18, 2014
