I have a brass coated etagere and it is shiny. Do I need to purchase a certain type of primer or should I sand some of the shine off first? I know this is paint and primer, but will i work for my project?

Answer:
For best results, previously coated surfaces must be sound and in good condition. Smooth, hard or glossy finishes should be sanded to create a surface profile for best adhesion of Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint.

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Darker than gold, thin, runny & translucent We shook the can well for 2 minutes before we began spraying our hardware. We shook between sprays to see if that would rectify our issues: this paint turned out WAY darker than it should have. I assumed this would be lighter or softer than gold. It wasn't. It was glittery, dark, and greenish (like tarnished brass). If you are layering this over bright or light silver or white, you might end up with a desirable color... otherwise you end up with a muddy, slightly shimmery mess. I didn't even use it long enough for the can to clog up (which would have been worth fixing if I had finished my small project). June 5, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Paint But Sloppy Spray System I would give the actual paint three or four stars but the spray system would not qualify for one star. What ever happened to simple spray can paint. They keep giving us these "upgraded" trigger systems that just do not work. On this job I taped a paper towel around the can and kept it far away from the parts I was painting because the drips and splatter flew out of the nozzle like insulating foam. After wiping up the paint from my garage floor I noticed the paint had actually flowed out pretty well and is drying nicely. Kudos to the chemist that formulated the paint and a thump on the head to the bozo that designed the goofy trigger. February 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Used to refinish patent leather purse I purchased this to refinish and repair a patent leather purse and after much research chose this because it binds to difficult surfaces and with it being oil based works well with adhering to the patent finish. I had no problems with the nozzle at all, maybe working at around 70 degrees outside makes a difference than if it's very cold or hot outside. The champagne color is perfect and looks high end duplicating the champagne colored bags you see in expensive purses and wallets. I was working with refinishing ivory patent leather and the coverage is excellent maintaining the needed flexibility without having to tackle the time consuming chore of staining. Note: I did prep the bag before spraying it with alcohol and a light sanding. I will agree that one can runs out very quickly, I used almost the whole can for a medium sized handbag. That aside with it being a primer and paint in one buying two cans is not much different than buying a separate primer and paint color so you would still end up buying at least two cans anyway. (Especially considering that you can't use most spray paints on patent leather unless they can handle vinyl so you have limited choices if you don't want the bag to crack) December 29, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Beware of this product I ruined my project thanks to this great spray ..all it does is splotches and splatter huge drops all over January 29, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Dissaponted in a otherwise reliable company I am painting my lawn furniture. Scrapped, sanded and primed on all bare spots. I have done years of painting and was a professional at one time - the spray is inconsistent - 1 can barely cover a foot stand. For pricing you need at least 1.5 - 2 cans for an average chair. - I just am disappointed thought the product would be better August 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful color The paint is a soft metallic color. Blends with any gold or silver accessories. June 23, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Uncontrollable and Inconsistent Spray This spray paint ruined my lamp shade. At first it just made it look really dirty as I was misting it on. Then suddenly, it started spouting droplets of paint onto the shade. In order to attempt to fix it I started spraying more vigorously to get thicker coverage to hide the spots. That is when I realized that turning the can sideways while spraying was the only way to get more paint to spray at one time. The spray patterns became very narrow, so I just settled for a wave look and added a mist of metallic silver spray paint to add the sheen that I had hoped I would get from this paint. I was able to salvage the lamp shade with some creativity and a little bit of luck. However, in retrospect, I should not have bought or tried this metallic champagne spray paint. February 11, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great Paint, Horrible Spray nozzle The paint color was exactly what I needed as it matched my cars original color perfectly. I was extremely excited UNTIL> > > > I couldn't get the can to spray about half way through and the nozzle sputtered, clogged, sprayed nothing but air, and left uneven splotches and dribbles on my fender. I should have been able to complete at least one fender, but I was left with a splotchy unfinished fender that needs more paint, as well as sanding and fix up to get rid of the dribbles. . . urrrgggh! I think the paint inside the can is of excellent quality. Too bad the spray can/nozzle is terrible. Huge disappointment. September 24, 2012
