Don't even *think* about trying to stain this without sanding. Gives a whole new meaning to "hair-raising". And even after a thorough sanding, I gave up trying to get even coverage after the third coat of stain, because it was getting too dark. Thankfully it is just for laundry room shelves, which are trimmed out on the front with clear pine. This stuff looks real pretty stacked up in the bin at the store, but it turns out to be some nasty, hard to work product, if you're looking for something to take a stain. I'll buy 1/2" AC from Lowes next time and skin it with some lauan- couldn't possibly be any worse than this. Caveat emptor.

This photo completely misrepresents the product. This photo shows 7 or 8 layer of material. I looked at it and I saw one layer of south american wood of whatever species sandwiched between two very thin verniers. If you sanded both sides you would be left with one layer of wood. It looks good but I can't think of anything it would be good for. I don't really think it would even be any good for shelves.

This stuff used to be of much better quality than what is available now. 2 issues: the thickness varies widely making it impossible to match to a dado. Worse is the general material quality: the center cores are obviously not birch (looks and acts like fir). This results in splitting and tearout. This material is NOT suitable for cabinet making. As subfloor it's overpriced.

Extremely thin veneer which splits out when drilling holes. Not suitable for furniture and cabinets. Layers not properly glued together.

Bought 2 sheets to build cabinet bench for my new shop. Face looks nice, but that is the only good thing I can say. Veneer is so thin that I cut thru finish sanding and believe when I say that a lot of sanding is required!!! Much more than the veneer will come close to allowing. Extremely disappointing. Seems you can't find quality anymore since the home centers took over. :(
