Questions & Answers

It seems the item is sensor. Does it require purchase of a matching thermostat?

Does it work with a three wire/ four wire/ or two wire system?
Asked by: Cj
Yes, it is used with the Ecobee thermostat. Don't think it would work with any other.

How does it control the temperature in each room?

I get that the sensors will tell you that the temp may be 68 in the basement and 78 on the second floor, but how does it control the furnace or AC to maintain a balance without a a multi zone system in the first place. Unless, it assumes you have a multi zone system and just doesn't bother to tell you it's necessary?
Asked by: JoeB
So this is exactly why I bought the ecobee and the remote sensors. My basement is 67 in the summer because the AC is pushing cooling to the upper floors. There was a large discrepancy room to room. I have 3 remote sensors plus the sensor on the ecobee. My thermostat is mounted in my dining room, which no one ever goes in. So why have the temp read there? I added remote sensors to the main bedroom, family room and since I had an extra, the basement. Now I created my 'Comfort Settings' during the day to use the family room temp. I set the 'Sleep' to only include the bedroom. If you want to use 2 sensors for 2 rooms, then it will take the average for the 2 sensors. But the nice thing is, I have left out the basement, otherwise it would throw the average way off compared to the rest of the house.

Does this attack to our furnace

Our thermostat is in the wrong spot and was wondering if this attaches to our furnace as the old one would be to hard to move?
Asked by: Barb
The sensors attach to the ecobee thermostat, not the furnace. With the ecobee thermostat and remote sensors, you can choose to disable the thermostat from reading the temperature from any sensor including the main thermostat. My ecobee thermostat is in a room no one ever goes into, so I do not use that temp reading in the monitoring of the temperature for the house.

Can I use it for one zone?

I have a 3 story home with one zone. Could I use the thermostat on the main floor and use the sensors to control the heat/AC in finished basement and 3rd floor where bedrooms are located? Or do I need to add a second zone?

Easy to pair, just bring to thermostat and new sensor will be recognised, give it a name and your ready to go. My only complaint is the sensors seem to have some variation in their readings (one to two degrees). I placed my 3 remote sensors next to each other, well away from any vents or fans; and over a period of 4hrs the temps being returned varied by almost two degrees, with one always +1 over the other two, and still some fluctuations. Seems like they should be the same or have a provision to add an offset (+/- to the temp) to better calibrate the sensors. Adding an offset seems like the best solution if they can't manufacture to a closer tolerance.

We've been looking for something like this for a long time, as our upstairs thermostat is not in a good place for measuring the temperature in the bedrooms. Works very well, and you can designate which ones you want to use for the thermostat at any time. Connected to the system flawlessly and have had no trouble with them. Very happy with the Ecobee system.

They would continually drop connections. Ecobee support said it could not be caused by weak battery because I was not getting a low battery message on my main thermostat. Weak batteries in both sensors

I had to move one of them because the air vent was blowing cold air between the sensors and where people sit in the room, which seemed to interrupt the IR detection. Love them!

I was busy so was unable to find replacement battery until a week later so didn't get the full benefit of running two sensors in different areas of my home (upstairs/downstairs) and the split difference feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised. Earns 5 Stars. :D I have one room in particular that averages 10 warmer than the rest of the house over summer. The day after I installed the sensor, my wife came back from that room saying it is not as hot as she anticipated. Little did she know what I did until I told her. It works!

It allows for an average house temperature to be calculated. These also work with the smartthings hub which allow for checking of motion and temperature in a room.
