A: Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. It is easier to have the original key to open the lock when rekeying your lock with this kit. If you are familiar rekeying locks, you can work to take apart your lock with out a key. Prime-Line cannot assist you with this.
A: No, you do not have to have your old key to re key your lock. There is an extra step now though. You must completely remove all 10 pins and 5 springs. There is a thin metal top slide that you carefully take off (cover it wit a cloth or towel so the springs and pins don't go flying.) You'll need the top pins and springs to put back in place in the next step. This kit comes with new keys if you choose to use them.
A: Yes, I believe you do to remove the tumbler.
A: Yes you have ti have the original key
A: No, it is not necessary to have the original key to rekey a "standard" Kwikset (and presumably other) lock(s). The lock can be removed and disassembled to access and remove the lock housing and tumblers. Care must be taken to ensure that clip which houses the springs that apply pressure on the tumblers is not deformed excessively upon removal, and the springs do not fly out, as they can travel and are very small and difficult to locate. Note, however, that the rekey kit supplies ONLY the tumblers necessary to rely locks to the key(s) supplied with the kit.
A: I am not sure if I fully understand your question but if you purchased a new Kwikset lock with new keys and you want to reset all of your old locks to the new keys, you do not need the old keys to reset the locks using the Kwikset Steel 5-Pin Door Lock Set Re-Keying Kit. All of the locks, new and old, must be Kwikset locks. I hope this answered your question. Bill
A: No this set provides 3 keys for you. You slip that key in before you tear down to rekey. If you have not rekeyed before. Do it in a clear plastic box (so you can see) and a towel or sheet of plastic covering opening of box and arms. There 5 tiny springs in the cylinder.
A: Kwikset Residential Locks are 5 pin. The Kwikset "Commercial" line of locks is 6 pin.
A: I believe so. In any case, this re-key kit comes with keys and matched sets of pins, so you could not use it with 6-pin, for example, because the included keys are only for 5-pin lock.
A: if you know for sure your lock is not a smart key lock, this kit will rekey you kwikset lock. Watch the Prime-Line video on rekeying a kwikset lock, it explains the process in detail
A: Correct

A: It has a smartkey hole.
A: From what I can tell, there is a little hole to the left of the keyhole for the smartkey/rekey function.
A: Hello Jimmy, and thank you for your inquiry. Smart key locks have a second smaller hole beside the larger key hole on the face of your knob or deadbolt, but for a better explanation on the smart key locks that are not of Prime-Line Products; please contact an associate at the Pro Desk of your local Home Depot, or the HomeDepot.com Customer Service line at (800) 430-3376 regarding your question where they may better assist you. Feel free to also contact the Prime-Line Products Customer Service Line at (877) 649-9740 with any other questions you may have with this re-keying kit, or any other products manufactured by Prime-Line Products.
A: A smart key lock has a little hole next to the keyhole. No little hole...not a smart lock.
A: kwikset smart key lock cylinders have a little slot (hole) in the front of the cylinder. Do a YouTube search on kwikset lock rekey, must be a dozen or more with all the info you'll need
A: This post is a few years old, but this answer would have helped me when weighing out my options. I pulled the trigger on this set, knowing I had a mixture of Smartkey locks and traditional locks and was uncertain if the key would work in the Smartkey locks. The answer I found is simple, if you have the working key for the Smartkey, then you re-key the lock as designed by Kwikset. The only kicker is, you will need a tool to use in the re-key slot on the cylinder.
A: No, this will not work with the smartkey lock.
A: No, this will not work with a smart key.
A: No. The Smart Key rekey set is entirely different, and does not require access to or replacement of tumblers. It does require the existing key (which successfully operates the lock)- otherwise it will have to be taken into a hardware store or locksmith which has the master rekeying set for Smart Lock assemblies.
A: You will not need the pins in the kit for the smart key lock, but you can use the new key to set the smart key lock to open with it but you need the Smart Key little tool and that locks current key to do it yourself. lacking both those, take the Smart Key lock to your HomeDepot store and they should have at least ONE person (may be more a 9-5 type and NOT til 10PM though - ask/plan ahead...). Service was FREE at my local HD store, So you will still have pins to do 5 NORMAL locks. If you are lacking keys for any of the "normal" locks, you can disasemble them as others have posted by carefully removing the thin cover above the springs in the cylinder's pin chambers and dump all current springs and pins out that way, OR remove the rear clip holding the plug in place, and buy some curved shims and an UNCUT KW1 blank and shove the blank into cylinder all the way in and then slide the shim into the very thin gap between the plug and the cylinder body from the rear at the location where the pins are. Be careful since the shim stick is very thin and you can cut yourself easily with it. Best squeeze its flat slightly curved surface between thumb and finger as you shove it gently in, if you don't buy the expensive tool to clamp the shim into. It will STOP when it hits the rear pin that has been shoved way up by the inserted blank key. Now carefully pull the key out slowly and you may have to wiggle the shim in and out a VERY TINY amount as you slowly back that blank out lest it keep the pins from dropping to where that pin chamber's bottom pin is lowered on the ramp at the front of the key to where the shim is at the gap between the top and bottom pin. You can then slide the shim in between those two pins and get it to the next pin chamber and keep doing that until you have all 5 pin chambers with their top pins above the shim and the bottom pin below. The shim being AT the shear line between the plug and the cylinder means that there is NOTHING then left to keep the plug from rotating in the cylinder, so ROTATE it by turning the key perhaps a quarter turn so no shim is still needed to keep the top and bottom pins separated. NOW once you have that picture in mind, realize that as you were backing out the blank key to do the front pin pair, the whole plug could have tried to slide out as you backed the blank key out after shimming the front most pin chamber! DON'T let that happen - it could be a disaster for you. KEEP a finger on the front of the plug and keep in tight in the cylinder and NO you actually need not shove the shim forward for that last front pin chamber but can instead while holding the plug from sliding out the front, instead try rotating the plug as you slowly back the blank key out. Do this in a wiggly trial at rotation as simply twisting hard will bind the pins at some height and not let their gap between them get to the sheer line as the key is being slowly backed out. Once the plug is rotated say a quarter turn, pull the shim out and using the PLUG FOLLOWER in the kit you can now use it to chase the plug out while keeping the top pins and springs in place for use with the new bottom pins you load into the plug to match the new keying. With the new key and pins in the plug, the pins should be flush with its top surface - at the sheer line. With it set that way. you can use the plug to chase the plug follower back out the rear, else you MUST have the plug rotated so its pin chambers will NOT accidentally be under the WRONG cylinder pin chambers which will let the top pins be spring pushed into the wrong plug pin chamber leaving the plug only partially inserted and stuck so it can't go in all the way. Once the plug is in all the way rotate it so its pin chambers are under the cylinders ones and with NO key in there the top pins will drop down locking it correctly in place or with the key in it, hold the plug all the way in as you rotate it to its normal position and then keep holding the plug in as you extract the key. Then install the clip that keeps the plug from sliding in and out. This is actually all quite simple once you get familiar with how the lock works and the steps and options and issues you have.
A: I "believe" I read elsewhere, if HD doesn't have 2 kits in stock with the same key HD can order you another kit keyed the same.
A: Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. This kit will work with 5-pin Kwikset locks... you can special order 2 of these and request they have the same key number. Unfortunately, the pins are not sold separately. For additional questions regarding this item, or any other product manufactured by Prime-Line Products, please call their toll free number at (877) 649-9740, or contact them by email at info@primeline.net
A: If by "universal" you mean mixing only Kwikset entry locks/deadbolts, then yes. You may need to buy extra pins or salvage some of the ones that you currently have in the existing locks, however. If by "universal" you mean mixing Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, Weiser, or other lock types, then no.
A: This kit includes keys and the pins matched to those keys. They do sell other, larger kits that include many more pins. You can use any Kwikset/Baldwin keys that you have, then, and just select the pins to match. The other thing you can do is just buy multiple re-key kits (this model). As long as the key codes match up, the locks would then all take matching keys. I have done this, but depending on how many are stocked at the particular store, you may have difficulty finding enough kits with matching codes for 8 locks (I think that would be at least 3 kits).
A: Yes
A: Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. If the locks are 5-pin Kwikset locks this kit should work just fine. A: As long as it is not a smartkey lock, then yes, it will work.
A: You can just stick the key in and match the pins up so they’re flush. Doesn’t necessarily need to be the same key kit.
A: Go to kiwkset.com order factory direct. I ordered online and get the wrong nonrefundable set.
A: Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. Ordering an additional kit with a specific key code is indeed possible, but probably not online. A: We watched the video before we bought the kit. Then watched each step of the video as we went through the process. Once you figure out which angles to use the tools at and how hard to hit it, etc. the 2nd and 3rd ones would take less than 15-20 min each. The first one took us close to 30 minutes.
A: If your new at it be patient. The more you do the faster you will go. My first time 20 minutes
A: Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. Please see the attached How-To video linked to this item... the link is below the photo. A: Both kits I purchased had the same number on the package.
A: The kits are not all the same. You can buy multiple kits that match by reading the code number on the key and matching them
A: Yes, the kits are all the same, they come with standard pieces used to rekey a lock.
