Q:the specifications state that for this model the recessed opening (rough opening ) is 22" by 54" , then it also says in the title description that the rough opening should be 22.5" by 54" , my opening is 22" by 54" , can I squeeze this into my 22" width ?

A: No, the cited dimensions were exact and accurate, at least on the item that I received.
As an alternative, you may want to try planing both sides of the ladder and both ceiling joists. Just a little. It’s close b

A: There is some very small leeway in the length of the outer cover of the door but not in the frame that sits inside the rafters. Check the length of the pull-down cover and see if you can lose three quarters of an inch. Alternatively, you can remodel the frame at the non-hinge end and shorten it.

A: I had the same problem but found a work around. The 54" was only critical at the bottom front edge where the ladder opens (opposite the ladder joint). I was able to notch the ceiling drywall to allow the ladder to open without making contact.

Q:Is there an option for a left-side rather than right-side handrail? The photo of the ad I see shows a fixed handrail on the right. Our current ladder has rail on the left, and that is preferable.

A: my son and i removed the old one and put the new one in. The u tube video was very good on how 2 do it and even thou i am 78 + am a reasonable DIYer if i have a model 2 follow. I would NOT have tried it on a NEW install. Took us a couple of hours and its not super heavy about 80 lbs.
