does the job, easy installation
This stuff is great. Being 1/4inch thick, you have to be careful when screwing to the surface. If the torque on your drill is set to high the pressure will result in the board cracking. (However, its not easy. You would need to be rather careless for this to happen). The grid groved into the board is extremely helpful when laying out and measuring your tile design. I would recommend this product anywhere that a 3/4 inch backer is not required.

Not sure this recommendation is worth much because I was not using it behind a shower installation, for which I think it is intended. Instead I am using it to put under a fire pit so it doesn't scorch the grass in my yard. I will say that it works fine for that, and it was much easier to work with than regular cement board that I thought I would have to use. This was easy to cut to size (with a utility knife) and lightweight.

We used the Hardie Backer board to create a firm, level, and durable surface to apply our marble tile back splash. The Backer Board is not overwhelmingly heavy, it is easy to cut and handle. I really love that it has the...what I would call embossed square grid to help guide and or measure. The Hardie Backer board really made the surface look neat and clean all we have to do now is cover the nail heads with joint compound and install the tiles.

The boards are supposed to be 36 x 60. The width varied from 35 7/8 to 36 1/8 making it hard to maintain spacing and alignment.
The boards have 1” squares pattern all around the board but the pattern is not square with the edges so cutting along a line on the board is not accurate.
The screws say you can attach 25 boards with 750 screws or 30 acres per board. However the nailing pattern on the board would call for 54 screws per board. (9 x 6 pattern).
Sell more screws that way but makes them seem less expensive when you buy it.
Manufacturing and marketing at Hardie board need more QA and ethics training for their products.
We will see how well it holds up to wear and usage.
New construction project not rebuild.

The 1/4" backerboard was much more durable that I originally had thought. We laid this down prior to tiling our kitchen this weekend. My only complaint is that its extremely hard to cut; had to use a circular saw. Other than that, I can tell that this will stand up to kitchen abuse.

Good backer board
I've used Hardie board on two different bathrooms and haven't had any problems with it. I always use their screws as well. It cuts fairly easily and provides a great platform to tile on.

BE SURE AND WET IT
Most def wet the Hardi surface before install. Tiled over concrete directly first, so had all the time in the world before the thinset mortar set up. Then went upstairs over plywood subfloor and installed this Hardi board – wow even when wetting the board first – you have little time to set tile before it sucks the moisture out of the thinset.
Really like the size – 2 sheets do the typical 6x6 bathroom. Tiled a counter top and 1 sheet was perfect.
I found my favorite tool, a Bosch oscillating saw will easily make cutouts for toilet flanges, heat registers, sinks or other tough cuts with minimal dust creation. Use the carbide blade, at half speed, do it outside with a box fan and wear a mask.
Speaking of setting toilets – use the Danco Perfect seal hybrid wax/rubber seal – you will be glad you did.

Easy to install over old subfloor!
I needed to do a 425 square foot tiling job. The subfloor was 2 layers of 3/4" plywood (for a total of 1-1/2" thickness), which was nailed/screwed to floor joists. This subfloor was still strong, but it was old, dirty, wavy, and a bit rotten at the surface. I replaced the most rotten sections of subfloor to be safe, but could not afford to replace the whole subfloor. I also could not afford to clean the subfloor via sanding. So, these HardieBacker boards saved the day! These boards are secured to the subfloor with both thin-set AND corrosion resistant screws. The thin-set helped to level the wavy areas, and the screws ensured a secure attachment to the subfloor in the dirty locations. Here are the exact materials I used: 1) This hardiebacker board Model # 220022. 2) Thin-set mortar Model # CBTSG50 (to bond the hardiebacker board to the subfloor). 3) Corrosion resistant cement board screws Model # 23410. 4) Thin-set mortar Model # MTSG50 (to fill the gaps between the hardiebacker board and to bond the tiles to the hardiebacker board). 5) 2" cement board tape Model # FDW8246-U (this tape is pressed into the wet thin-set mortar when filling the gaps between the hardiebacker board). IMPORTANT NOTES: 1 bag of thin-set mortar provides JUST enough material to lay 4 hardiebacker panels. 150 screws are JUST enough to secure 3 hardiebacker panels. The official HardieBacker website has awesome videos to guide your installation. Good luck!

Talking about backerboard, I have to say you get what you pay for. For hidden and less demanding applications, a cheaper alternative may work. For me, I not only need something durable, but also good looking. The James Hardie HardieBacker is my number one choice. You just can't beat the quality and precision of this product. It is easy to work with, and the finish is wonderful.
