We had to replace an ionic sensor that was way too sensitive for the kitchen. This Kidde photoelectric works fine. The existing screw holes in the ceiling match the holes in the Kidde base. It's plenty loud enough when you test it.

I chose these smoke alarms because they were single function (no carbon monoxide alarm), single button, old-fashioned 9V battery-powered, photo-electric smoke alarms. I did not use them in a kitchen, but in parts of the house where the fires are likely to be smoky. The homeowner insisted on the traditional battery power after a bad experience with a sealed 10 year battery alarm that could not be turned off, nor the battery removed without smashing the whole alarm with a hammer. I prefer the single function alarm so that the homeowner can know easily, without looking in the manual, what to look for to figure out why the alarm is going off.

Bought 2 - 1 had failed at 95 day mark
Purchased in Store, hard to find the PE with just regular 9V battery. One of the units started the low battery chirp at the 95 day mark, (battery measures 9.25V). Hopefully is an outlier, will have to decide options to go with... but reluctant to get another of the P9050 models.

Hello. Our alarms have a unique way of testing the batteries. They test the resistance of the battery while the alarm is powered by the battery and measures how the resistance changes. This is a more accurate way to test the battery but it means a battery with 9.25 volts when not powering anything might not have the power necessary while powering the alarm, especially a carbon zinc battery. When the alarm goes into low battery for the first time, the battery has to have enough power for the alarm to chirp every 30 seconds for 7 days and still detect smoke and go off for one solid hour without affecting the pitch or volume of the alarm. Since the speaker takes up the most power in the alarm, it takes a powerful battery to accomplish this, almost a very good battery, and a battery can test as still good even when the alarm thinks the battery is low. It sounds like a dud battery but that was low though it still read 9.2 when not powering anything. The battery should be changed every 6 months to a year with a brand and model of battery as listed in the owner's manual. Other batteries can read as low when they are not. If you choose a carbon-zinc battery, we would strongly recommend a battery with a good use-by date of 2 years out from the current year. If you choose an alkaline battery, we would strongly recommend a battery with a good use-by date of at least 3 or 4 years out from the current date. Batteries close to their use-by date can sometimes not be powerful enough to power the alarm for 6 months to a year and can sometimes not be powerful enough for the alarm not to read it as low.

Hello. Have you done any construction lately or anything that might have brought up a lot of dust and debris? Where is the alarm located in the house? Is it in one of the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual? This would especially include alarms being installed within 3 ft (.9m) of a forced air supply ducts used for heating or cooling, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high air flow areas. We recommend that alarms not be installed near vents, flues, chimneys, or fans. We recommend that alarms not be installed near doors or windows near areas directly exposed to the weather. We strongly recommend not to install these alarms in garages, attics, and crawl spaces as you will get temperatures, dust, insects, and chemicals that can cause nuisance alarms. Try cleaning out the alarm and looking at the location. To clean, hold the unit by its edge and thoroughly blow through the gap on the side of the unit with compressed air (like keyboard cleaner). If that doesn't resolve the issue, call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788

Hello. False alarms are most commonly caused by something interfering with the sensor. To clean, hold the unit by its edge and thoroughly blow through the gap on the side of the unit with compressed air (like keyboard cleaner). We recommend cleaning out all of your smoke alarms at least every 6 months to a year and at this point we would recommend cleaning out all of your other alarms as well as a preventative. Some of your alarms may be in one the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual. Try cleaning out the alarms. If you have the issue again, call us with that alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can get this resolved for you.

They are generally fine but one of the newly purchased ones were bad in quality. It gave false alarm. Although the battery is full it did not pass thru the test (no beep when the test button was pressed). Hope the quality will be further improved.

False alarm that would not silence
It came with the condo I bought and moved into 3 months ago. The manufacture date stated on the device indicates it was manufactured on October 15, 2021. It failed about a month ago, so not even a year old. It’s not located near “high flow areas” and is mounted where the instructions recommend. It went off in the middle of the night, would not silence, and did not work (went off and the push the hush button would not hush it) even after a vacuum and replaced batteries. My old place had Kidde alarms that were 15 years old that worked great (i.e., went off when they should —indicating we needed to clean the oven ;) ), tested fine, batteries replaced every six months. Kidde is taking shortcuts and blaming the consumer for the result of its cheap quality. I replaced it with a First Alert.

Hello. Call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can ask further questions and figure out why this is happening and how to keep it from happening again and get this resolved.
          False alarms
Worked correctly for the first 3 years then started with false alarms which cannot be silenced (holding the hush button does nothing…it just eventually stops on its own). Batteries are always the recommended type/brand/age/expiry. We’ve done the compress air routine which anecdotally would buy us a few month but lately no amount of cleaning seems to help. I’m not sure what good the warranty is since whenever we’ve called support they just assume its dirty and our fault. We have to prematurely replace since we have pets who are terrified when a false alarm goes off with no one home to deal with it.

Hello. We do stand behind our products and we are happy to troubleshoot and figure out what is going on and get an issue resolved. We do recommend cleaning out the alarms every 6 months to a year or more often depending on what is going on in that location. If cleaning isn't helping with the issue then some of your alarms may be in one the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual. This would especially include alarms being installed within 3 ft (.9m) of a forced air supply ducts used for heating or cooling, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high air flow areas. We strongly recommend not to install these alarms in garages, attics, and crawl spaces as you will get temperatures, dust, insects, and chemicals that can cause nuisance alarms. Review the locations of the alarms and see if that is an issue.

I had to return it. When I installed it, it sounded its initial alarm, then chirped every minute thereafter. It never stopped. Instructions said that indicated a bad battery, but the battery came with the alarm.

            Replacement smoke detector
I purchased this smoke detector to replace a 7 year old one which no longer worked, hoping it would fit in the original holding bracket. It did and the purchase price was reasonable.
