Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Brad Good product, but something was missing
I bought 4 of these to add some new lights in my garage. Everything went well until it was time to wire everything up. There were no ground lugs. The picture on the HD site shows a ground lug. I went back to HD and talked to the person in electrical. He was surprised to see that there were no ground lugs on the old work boxes, but the new work boxes have the ground lugs. I ended up having to buy 4 new work boxes and remove the ground lugs and install them on the old work boxes. The slot for installing the ground lug was on the old work boxes, but for some reason the manufacturer left them off. Luckily the new work boxes were only $1.26 each, but I had to make the 14 mile trip back to HD.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by jbreitmun Great to add light weight lighting to existing structure!
I purchased three of these to hang some light weight simple pendant lights above our dining table. These are made for old construction. These normally come with a paper template shoved inside the box but this time there were none so I went on Carlon website and downloaded the template. I know I could get by without but I like the fact the template has points where you drill a 1/2" hole in 3 areas prior to cutting to compensate the extra space needed for the wings. It also ensures you don't end up with a larger hole than needed. After hole is cut you slide it up in place and with a philips screwdriver to tighten all 3 screws so the wings tighten to your substrate.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by terb5014 Works great: 2 recommendations
Worked great for sconces. I have 2 recommendations to users: #1 don't drill the 3x 1/2" holes 120 degrees apart, as the template describes. I did this for the first light and the 1/2" holes were very close to being visible around the base of my sconce. For the next 3 I cut the 4" hole with a hole saw, only, and didn't cut the 3x 1/2" holes. The old work box fit just fine (it was snug, but I actually preferred this). Recommendation #2: Tighten and loosen the 'ear-screws' once PRIOR to installation. Reason - the threads in the plastic ears are not pre-cut. I had issues with the ears/screws becoming cocked in a strange position behind the wall and would not tighten. This was because the screws were trying to cut the threads for the first time. If you pre tighten the screws (and then loosen them to the original position) before installation, it will make tightening and installing once in place very easy. I can tell you from experience that it is very frustrating having to remove the box from the wall because 1 ear became snagged/cocked and won't tighten. Once I learned from the first box and corrected the issues, the last 3 boxes were a breeze!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by vgvg1 Good, slightly tricky to install
I purchased 2 of these boxes because I was adding additional ceiling lights. I didn't have a proper hole boring bit to cut through the drywall, so getting the hole the exact size with space for the tabs was a little bit more difficult than I expected--not much margin error. After inserting the box through the hole, I tightened the tabs enough to give it a solid feel, but I didn't want to over-tighten because it seemed like the tabs could snap off very easily. The screw holes for mounting the lamp fixture were not pre-threaded, which is probably just as well. Overall, I was happy with the end result and would recommend this product.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Grogan14 Decent Option
I am not a fan of the blue Carlon boxes in general, but there are not a lot of simple alternatives to this box is some situations, and it works fine. The old work boxes with flippers are just about the easiest to install in drywall, and there's not many ceiling boxes with them available, that I know of.
It is certainly not rated to hang a ceiling fan from, and do not try that in any way, shape or form! Good for lightweight fixtures and smoke detectors, where allowed by code.

these boxes are good for remodels & they are a simple fix if you need a box where you already have wires some older houses lack any boxes at all these fit the bill make sure what material you are using them in because the mounting tabs are only good for about 1" thick or less they do have screw holes but i have found that you need to screw at an angle to find some thing to hold (this is only good for a last resort) carlon is good quality i have been very happy with most of their products & customer support through their website

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RednexToyz Use to install new track lighting
Installed some track lighting in an existing ceiling. Great for 'old work' installs. Make sure there isn't a stud or obstruction in the area, cut the hole & place it in the ceiling. The three screw tabs secure it to the sheetrock.

Box Work Great, and it does not have cheap tabs on it as other peaple think, its made to code and you dont need the tabs to be heavy duty, this product is made to hold a good size lamp (and not your self) remember its going on sheet rock not on anything super solid.
