Customer Questions & Answers

Does this mulch stop weeds

Asked by: Kay
No mulch will "stop" weeds from growing. Mulch will make it harder for weeds to be established and mulch will make it easier to remove the weeds that have been established in the mulch. You also need a minimum of two inches and preferably three inches of mulch to hold back the weeds. A one inch layer of mulch isn't going to slow down the establishment of weeds.

Is this good to put on top of your vegetable garden? In the containers?

Asked by: Beck
Shredded pine bark mulch is fine for gardening and potted plants.

Are these also known as Pine Fines?

Making my own potting mix for growing container veg; recipe from the Gardenweb/Houzz website as follows The 5:1:1 mix: 5 parts pine bark fines, dust - 3/8 (size is important 1 part sphagnum peat (not reed or sedge peat please) 1-2 parts perlite (coarse, if you can get it) garden lime (or gypsum in some cases) controlled release fertilizer (if preferred)
Asked by: WeaGro
No. Pine fines are very small pieces of pine bark meant to be mixed into the soil as an "amendment", although many people, including myself, prefer Pine fines for mulch. The only problem is finding the product. Pine fines are very hard to find and are usually substantially overpriced.

I purchased 20 bags at a Maryland store in April 2017. There is NO WAY that any of the mulch in those bags was screened through a 5/8" screen. One bag had a forked branch 19" long and 1" in diameter, 2 pieces of metal can about 1" square, AND a red plastic Coca-Cola cap. Another bag had a half section of large branch over 12" long —and almost 3" wide. About 20% of the contents of each bag was filled bark chips that were 2" to 3" square. I would estimate only 40% of the contents would pass through a 5/8" screen. The bar code # on the bags I received was 740114 143834 packaged by gardenpro.

It is not a good product and I do not recommend it to others. It more coarse than the photograph, contained limbs, sticks and burnt wood. None of the bags had been screened or properly ground. It is not attractive in the garden. Additionally, the product has apparently been roasted or paritially burned to reduce sap and smells like it came from fire pit. The main thing going for it is price. All 3 bags were similar so this was just a bad bag.

I bought 20 bags of this "shredded" mulch online but when I went to the Home Depot store to get it I quickly cancelled the order and asked that the money I paid be put back on my credit card. This is not "shredded" mulch as shown online. It is only partly shredded and contains nuggets and other chunks of wood. Keep in mind that when you buy this "shredded" mulch from Home Depot you never know which brand of mulch you are buying. The brands change month to month but they are all sold under the store SKU 363944. Some brands will be properly shredded. Some brands are not shredded at all but are small chips. Some brands contain both shredded and nuggets of varying sizes.

The bags containing the "dry" mulch was very rich in color and spread very easily. However, over half of my purchase contained "water logged" mulch which was not only difficult to handle, but very dark in color and did not blend in with the dry mulch. Bear in mind I'm certainly aware that mulch will become wet with a great deal of rain like we've had lately, but if you're going to sell the mulch, then please come up with some type of mechanism to keep the mulch dry. I would have returned the "wet" mulch; however, I just didn't want to go through the hassle. I just hope the much darker and wet mulch will eventually blend in with the more acceptable mulch. Thanks for the opportunity to respond.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Mulch The brown mulch I bought was what I ordered. There were a few 'chunks' of wood that evidently didn't get 'mulched' properly, but fo the most part it was quite good. The best part of this order was that when I got there it was waiting for me right at the customer service counter - ready to roll out to my car. That was very nice!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mulch had grass seeds in it This mulch was reasonably priced and looks great in the plant bed, but one of the four bags we purchased had grass seeds in it. We put the mulch down to inhibit grass and weed growth in the plant bed, but a lot of grass began growing in one particular section of the plant bed - and the grass is different from the grass in our yard. It's obvious that the one bag of mulch had seeds in it and they began growing shortly after we spread the mulch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great cover for my bluebberry patch I put it on my blueberry patch last year to keep the soil acidic and low and behold, we had a ton of blueberry crop this summer! Not to mention, keeps the weeds down as long as you prepare the ground with a landscape fabric and about 2" of the mulch. It looks great too!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks Great Needed to dig up and redo front bed. Very happy with final look. Will see how it weathers the rest of the summer. My only negative comment would be the quality of the actual bags. Almost half split open while loading/unloading the truck.
