How to use as dryer vent at end wall

When used to vent dryer to outside home wall: how can critters be prevented from entering while avoiding lint buildup?
Asked by: kimfit
Dryer vents need to be cleaned now and then anyway to keep any possibility of fires but the interior screen will prevent rodents and the flap will prevent insects from entering.

Conflicting Information

"Built in screen to prevent insect entry (Must be removed if using for Dryer Venting)" is in the description then the tech says "You can't remove it without professional assistance." Well which is it? I want critters to stay out but want to use for a dryer. Can't the screen just be made so it is removable? Once a month remove, rinse and reinstall. That's how my current one is but it is on the roof. I am trying to keep from having to climb up onto my roof once a month. This is unnecessarily dangerous and i want to be able to clean my vent while on the ground. Nice and safe.

I left the answer to a similar question that should appear on the Home Depot web site under this product. Essentially you would have to carefully cut and pull the mesh from the clamping ring with pliers or a similar tool from inside the pipe side. Not easy at all. Another option would be a small power tool like a Dremel rotary tool. Again, not easy.

how do you remove the insect entry screen

Asked by: matt
From what we could see there are two possibilities, both tricky. The first would be to carefully cut the mesh with a pair of wire cutters (end-cutting). cut around the circle from inside the pipe side as closely as possible to the sides. bend the remaining stubs outward so they don't catch lint. The second is to slit the mesh into several pie-shaped quadrants and remove them with needle-nosed pliers using a rotating motion to wrap and pull the sections. We did not try either and it did not look easy as the mesh is firmly clamped by the collar.

What are the dimensions of the vent frame?

4 in is the diameter of vent pipe. The exterior of my hour is stucco and the cut-out rectangular opening for the dryer vent is five and 3/4 in. by six in.
Asked by: buster
The vent we purchased is 6 1/2" wide x 7 1/4" tall overall. It is designed to sit flush against the outside of your building utilizing a hole large enough to pass a 4" pipe (4 1/4"- 4 1/2" diameter). It can be secured by screws through the flange or high quality adhesive caulking under the flange, or ideally both.

Customer Reviews

4 in. Round Wall Vent is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bathroom exhaust fan I bought this vent hood to use for a termination for a bathroom exhaust fan that I recently installed. After reading the reviews, you have to question some of the negative reviews and the experience of the people giving the negative reviews. The vent hood works excellent. I had no problems installing it, of course I used the right tools for the job. I tested it and the vent hood does exactly what its suppose to do. Now, could you go out and buy a top of the line vent hood, absoulutley but you will pay the price. Believe me, If you purchase this vent hood you will have no problems.

Got tired of replacing the cheap vinyl louvered vents and started searching for something more durable. Theses aluminum vents should last indefinitely but I wasn't crazy about the mill finish so I primed and then painted them white. Here's the really good new...these vents have a damper rather than louvers. The damper opens more easily and the bathroom fan now moves WAY more air than it ever did. What an improvement. The second vent was for the dryer which had no problem opening the old louvers, but I'm guessing it works better for moving the lint.

It will serve it's purpose but it is manufactured from very thin and flimsy aluminum sheet metal. Avoid mowing the lawn near it. I was expecting something more sturdy and robust especially at a price point of $23-out-the-door. Having buyers remorse and should have opted for a more solid galvanized steel and learn!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been up on the walls for more than 2 years. Still look good and work well I have two of these on outlets from my bathroom vents, and one of these on the kitchen extractor. All were well made, easy to install, look nice and neat on the outside of the house and are working well. I like that they include the metal grills to keep critters out, and the damper always returns to the 'closed' position. When I put them up I thought they'd be ugly on the exterior of the house but you don't really notice them and actually they look quite good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made inexpensive replacement This is a well made inexpensive dryer vent hood we purchased to replace a plastic unit that had failed. We live in South Florida so plastic is damaged by UV and fails within 5-10 years. to be fair, this unit is aluminum and will also deteriorate from the salt spray prevalent in most coastal regions. A better albeit more expensive choice would be copper or stainless steel for those installations with direct salt exposure.
