Answer:
It is not mandatory but recommended as rain water will need to escape one way or another. If a drain is not installed rain water will escape around/through the block and potentially carry ash with it staining the concrete around. Good luck!

Answer:
Yes, the heat from the fire will work down through the gravel/rock base and potentially cause the concrete (especially the surface) to crack and spawl. To avoid this, look at putting a heat plate down on the concrete and then putting the gravel/rock over the top of that. This will protect the concrete.

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good looking fire pit The fire pit was a little pricey but not much different than other similar products out there. Good directions for installation. Excellent folks at Home Depot to deal with (this was at the Iron Mountain Michigan store). The outside stays cool to the touch no matter how large a fire is made. Excellent for roasting marshmallows with the kids/grandkids. June 25, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Happy Kit was delivered as advertised and on time. Very easy to build, I back filled the annulas with pea gravel and topped that off with coarse tube sand for a nice finish. June 30, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 60 inch concreterandom stone gray fire pit This fire pit went together so quickly! The metal ring inside is perfect. We have had so many compliments in just a week on it's appearance. Most of all we love sitting around and enjoying the fire! Love it!!!! July 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very functional and nice looking I like everything about the fire pit. It's not real looking of course, but you know that before you buy it. I thought about building one out of real stone, but it's way easier to do it this way. This thing is really heavy, so I would think twice about putting it on a thin concrete slab/patio or unpacked soil. I actually put a cheap, quick footer under mine using 4" and 2" cap blocks. It's been there a year through all kinds of weather and nothing has moved at all. I also poured a concrete bottom to make it easier to empty and clean out once in a while. For a cheap sitting area floor, I got the ground really muddy and tamped in bagged gravel. It makes a great surface as long as you have a good grade with proper drainage. I wouldn't want to use it close to my house because I have a lot of natural rock structures and this doesn't look real, but I'm picky about that....mine is in the woods so it doesn't matter. It somewhat fools your eyes into believing it's real rock anyway. Most people won't notice and will think it's great. January 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The firepit looks exactly like the picture, and is what we were expecting. We love our new firepit, thought we haven't had a chance to use it yet. It looks great! But, we learned that we needed to add pea gravel between the metal fire ring and stone. That was not specified in the directions. This is to help deflect the heat from the stone. And delivery is only curbside, due to the almost 1500lbs it weighs. Luckily we were having work done and our vendor brought it to the backyard with his bobcat. August 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by love love love it I put this fire pit together around an old stump. Was pretty easy and came out awesome. you will need some other items that do not come with the kit like rocks and cement adhesive but I am very happy with this item. May 6, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful and easy This is easy to put together and absolutely beautiful when finished. As mentioned you will need some stone and cement adhesive. May 14, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great addition to our yard This was an easy kit to assemble and looks great in no time! Directions had lots of details but some were not related to the kit we bought. March 27, 2014
