Hi Peggy.

Echeverias are a great plant for indoors, providing you have them planted in a well-drained soil such as a cactus mix and in a bright indirectly lighted area. This means no direct sunlight!
You may want to line the bottom of your terrarium with a 1 inch layer of activated charcoal to act as a drainage layer and to help keep any excess moisture from going stagnant or toxins from building up.
Activated charcoal is the same material used in fish tanks.
This type of plant is in the succulent family and likes to be in damp, but never a wet soil.
If you are using tap water, be sure to let it set out for 24 hours so that the chlorine and the fluoride in the water will evaporate off.
The biggest mistake made with terrariums, is over watering. Succulents like the Echeveria can store water in their thick leaves and will be fine if the soil dries out slightly.
If you have a lid on your terrarium, it will be better for your new plants if you allowed them to breathe frequently. This means leaving the lid off so that fresh air can get inside.
A great accent plant for your terrarium would be the Sansevieria, also know as the Snake plant or the Mother-inlaw plant.
Have fun with your new project. Be sure to let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Answer:
Echeverias can burn in full and direct sun. Zone 9 is fine. I would just keep them in a spot that does not expose them to full afternoon sun. Also, after you unpack them, let them get accustomed to the sunlight in a shaded area for a couple of days before placing them outside. Most importantly, only water when bone dry! If they arrive damp, then do not water. Soggy soil the kiss of death for succulents. Read More

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Plants! These Echeveria succulents are beautiful! They are an excellent price for the size and quality of the plant. They are packed beautifully with no damage. I have ordered them several times, and I am always excited to see what I will get. Altman is well known for their succulents. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute little succulents I had no idea I could order plants by mail from Home Depot. These little plants came well packaged and are in good shape still.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice decorative plants These plants are great. They grow well and are very nice to decorate a window or a table... I only wish a pot would be offered (kind of a pain to get the stones/sand/soil/pot to make the while thing look nice - I live in NYC, apartment).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly Surprised I was a little iffy at first of ordering plants, but once they came, I was mesmerized! I love that they are assorted so each shipment is unique! I would definitely buy again and recommend these to anyone who wants succulents but are unable to find these lovely wonders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So lovely to look at. These are the cutest little plants I ever had. They need little care, 'they just sit there and be pretty.' Occasionally they get some water. They look nice, healthy and my 'Black Prince' has grown nice and tall. Visitors think I am a genius and a pro at plants. Ha!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from impressed by packaging/shipping! Was unsure how these would handle the shipping process -- I didn't want to sink my money into a bunch of plants that would just arrive dead. I was impressed by how carefully they were packaged so that they would survive the trip. Unfortunately, a few have died in the months since then, but it's hard to tell how much of that is due to the quality of the product vs other variables.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent price I bought this group along with the smaller ones (3.5 inches). Need some love and care in the very beginning. Would buy again from homedepot.com.
