Answer:
Just asking if everyone answering here actually owns this exact model of phone or not. The 4 batteries are needed for the Caller ID/ LCD display to work. I don't believe this model illuminates,.. but maybe ti did in an earlier or "similar" version?

You have to install 4 AA batteries into the phone that do not come with the phone for it to light up.

I just noticed that the image of the phone shown on the Home Depot website (along with many others) is inaccurate. Not only does it show that the Called ID display is illuminated (which apparently it is not) but it also shows a different layout than an actual phone does. The image curiously also has a "number of messages" counter box on it. This phone has no answering machine function, therefore, it has no messages to count!
On the other hand, the rest of the phone is great. It is easy to use, the speakerphone quality is loud and clear,, and it looks nice. I put on a longer handset cord (12'). Just in case someone asks,.. the Caller ID, speakerphone and some other "non-essential" functions rely on 4 AA batteries to work. Otherwise, it only uses the power supplied by the phone company in the phone wire. It does not (and cannot) use AC power. The number keys are not backlit but they are somewhat oversized and are very easy to read. It has no Voice Mail indicators. Read Less

Bought another one and it, too, does not have an illuminated Caller ID display. For the sake of product description accuracy, does anyone actually own this same CL2909 phone in which the Caller ID display is illuminated??

Answer:
Well, I got another one and it, too, is NOT illuminated. Now I have to determine if this is a bad batch of phones or if this phone is not really illuminated, after all.

You download the manual off of the internet. The abridged booklet included with my phone gave a some info. on programming (enough to make it usable) & said where to go to download the whole manual. www.telephones.att.com/manuals

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good phone I like the large size of display and buttons. Phone shape is attractive and practical. Speaker sound is loud enough. Speed dial is easy to program. I miss a light that indicates a call has come through but otherwise very good. September 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good replacemnt We have had this phone before and was pleased to see that we could still get it. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Set up of this phone was a breeze. This AT&T telephone has buttons for Mute, Hold, Flash, Redial, Volume Control and programs. It is a speaker phone and holds a large directory of most called numbers. It is excellent quality and I love it. Can't beat the price either. Glad I bought it and I recommend it. July 19, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Great features, great price, easy to use, poor quality The CL2909 phone was a snap to setup, pretty easy to program and looks pretty good - for a phone. I like the large sculpted buttons as they are easy to look up a number and punch in at same time without making mistakes. However, the phone went bad after very little use. This phone gets used at most 2-3 times per week. One day after about 4-5 months, people couldn't hear me talk over the headset. Speaker phone was good, but nothing from headset. Now I am having trouble with speaker phone too. People can hear me okay but the speech is no longer clear. I have to repeat numbers several times and the last caller thought my name was Butch instead of George! The phones are cheap, only about two dollars more than a replacement head set so buy 2 and you'll have one good phone for quite a while. April 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ATT Phone: Worth the price! Excellent phone. No power adapter needed. We use it mounted on the kitchen wall. The display is angled down towards the floor making it a little hard to read. Other than that small ergonomic issue, we love it! This model replaced an older ATT model that did not have caller ID. April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job Unfortunately batteries were required. Otherwise OK April 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible phone I am disabled and use speaker phones exclusively. I could hear everyone else just fine, they could not hear me without being a few inches from the phone yelling loudly.. Thanks Home Depot for a painless return policy. April 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product for a great price! This product is a single-line phone with volume controls and speaker. It provides great hands-free clarity whenever I need it! April 8, 2015
