Answer:
Thanks for your question. You should not cut them lengthwise as they fit up under the shingles.

Answer:
Howdy C450,
If the screen (filter side) is down, it can't do it's job of keeping the small particles out of the larger filter. This can result on the guard not being able to do it's job correctly.
Happy guarding,
Coach Dave

3 ft. White Snap-In Filter Gutter Guard is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 184.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from WARNING! Yes, these install very easily and keep out debris and leaves as long as they haven't been exposed to summer sun and then they buckle down into the rain gutter and clog everything up along with the debris. Installed these in the Fall of 2015 and they are completely useless now (July 2016). The No Warranty should have been the clue. Time spent installing is now a complete loss. Will check into another product that will do the job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BUYER BEWARE! BUYER BEWARE! i write very few reviews, only when I am over the top excited or disappointed with a product. In my opinion this product is garbage and should not be sold. I installed these one year ago and upon recent inspection found that they have all caved in and are laying in the bottom of the gutters. I don't know if the weight of the snow pushed them in or the heat of the sun softened them but I wasted a lot of time and money on this purchase. Of course, I no longer have my receipt so I may be stuck with them. If this is the case Home Depot has lost my business forever ... there is a Lowe's directly across the street from them.

Lasts for several years before they sag or weaken - I've had the product on my gutters for almost 8 years and just need to replace now. Annoying that Home Depot has white in stock but I have to order brown on line since no brown is carried in my local stores.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glad I did! Thought long and hard about whether to pay someone for one of the fancy pro options available or to do it myself. Now that I have done it myself I am truly glad I did!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy and Effective The first one was a bit of a struggle to install because I worried that I might break it. The rest went on without a hitch.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible - returned them all. If I could have given these a ZERO rating, I would have. I had seen other reviews that indicated these guards warped (caved into the gutter), but I attributed those instances to hotter climates. I, however, live in West Virginia, not Texas. Upon receiving the shipment, I carried them up on the roof and took a few out to get ready for installation the next day. One of them was left hanging over the side of the roof. When I went back the next day, that guard had melted so that the part of the guard that had been hanging over the edge was now pointing down to the ground. The other guards that were on the roof (out of the box) had warped into a wavy shape. I wish I had taken a few pictures to illustrate this - it was rather unbelievable. Luckily, I was able to box them all up and return them to my local Home Depot without any problems. I have seen other reviews since my purchase where they discuss the problem of the adhesive that binds the fine mesh to the guard failing over time, leaving the fine mesh flapping in the wind. Before I returned my set, I tested the strength of the bond and was amazed at how easily the mesh could be separated. I feel like - and other reviewers confirmed this - that given a little bit of time and exposure to the elements, the mesh would indeed have separated. I'm no plastic expert, but I know for sure there are plastics out there that, unlike these, wouldn't melt in the summer sun. Perhaps the white ones will fare better, as they'll reflect the sun's rays better, but these brown ones are junk. Avoid at all cost unless you live north of the Arctic Circle.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good idea but fit is important I recommend this only if you check the size of the lip of your gutter before buying. The lip must be 1/2 inch or less. The mesh will help keep pine needles and leaves out much better than those with larger openings. My only concern, other than the fit, is how long they will last. The plastic mesh is glued to the outer surface of the guard. These will require a bit of maintenance due to the downward cup once it is in place. Material will have to be removed from time to time. Also, be sure not to leave any gaps between the sections, glue them together with silicon. Not bad for a do it yourself product but not comparable to commercial products.

Recently reglued the screens to the guards as they were coming unglued. Also bought a few more guards to do a better job at the corners of the gutter system. Am very happy with the results. I have lots of trees overhead and lots of leaves and pine needles; the leaves sit on the guards until they are blown off by the wind. The water trickles into the gutters. The screens are helpful dealing with the pine needles. Although some get stuck in the guards, most blow off as the leaves. The gutters get very little debris. There are some places where the gutter outside edge is too far from the shingles to slip the guard under the shingles. In order to support the guards properly, some pieces of aluminum sheet metal were extended under the shingles and the guards rest on the aluminum.
