Answer:
Howdy C450,
If the screen (filter side) is down, it can't do it's job of keeping the small particles out of the larger filter. This can result on the guard not being able to do it's job correctly.
Happy guarding,

Thanks for your question. The screen at the top is the way the product was manufactured to work.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product I have had these on my home for almost 5 yrs. now. I recently had to replace one small section due to squirrel damage but other than that, they have performed very well. I have about 100' total on my home and just inspected all of it. With the exception of the squirrel damage, the product is holding up very well. I have been pleasantly surprised by it's performance and durability. Very economical. July 11, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by good idea but fit is important I recommend this only if you check the size of the lip of your gutter before buying. The lip must be 1/2 inch or less. The mesh will help keep pine needles and leaves out much better than those with larger openings. My only concern, other than the fit, is how long they will last. The plastic mesh is glued to the outer surface of the guard. These will require a bit of maintenance due to the downward cup once it is in place. Material will have to be removed from time to time. Also, be sure not to leave any gaps between the sections, glue them together with silicon. Not bad for a do it yourself product but not comparable to commercial products. April 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by White Gutter Filter 3' Lengths I was Skeptical that these would really snap in, but they did. They do not over lap thus the possibility of debris still getting into the gutter. Seeing more expensive panels, I noted the notched end, so when I got these, and them being plastic, I took a pair of Garden Snips and made my own notches, about an inch works fine. you are notching along the snap-in edge just at the transition point from the snap-in and screen filter). I also cut out the under side of the snap-in where the gutter is spiked to the house, (2" worked fine for me) otherwise sliding the panel under the spike area can become frustrating. With doing these two cutouts the panels went in quite easily and they look really nice..., and they should last quite a few years. June 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Aren't compatible with Vinyl gutters I installed the Amerimax gutter system in VINYL. The hooks that you use to attach the gutters are different than the ones for aluminum gutters. This, and the design of the gutter itself, makes the profile of the gutter different. It should be made clear on the product page that these are only meant to be used with the aluminum gutter system. June 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by These do NOT snap into my gutters as stated and my gutters are less than 3 years old. My gutters were installed less than 3 years ago. I'd purchased these but my gutters have a fat outer lip so they DO NOT snap in. I'd used these years ago on a much older home with older gutters and those worked no problem. Seems newer types of gutters are too thick and do not allow for the edging of the guard to snap in as it has a much smaller slit. I improvised though by installing them wrong side up, slide them under roofing and then nailed them in place with a nail that has a rubber gasket so nothing should leak between the nail and the wood beneath the shingles. The nail may rust but it won't be seen. January 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good econonical product Great for the money. Have had them on my gutters for years. Those that have raised the concern that the screen falls into gutter may have installed them upside down. March 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not such a great gutter screen Have had these gutter guards for 5+ years, and we thought they were working okay until we needed our gutters cleaned a few months ago. When the guy cleaned our gutters we couldn't believe the stuff inside the gutters under these guards. The screen filters fell off and lodged inside the gutters thus blocking and stopping the rain from flowing to the downspout. Over the years we have seen birds come and pecked at them until they separated them and got in there and made nests. That was another problem with them; they move very easily. The gutter cleaning guy found bird nesting materials, the screens that had fallen off, gravel from the roof and debris. How did all this stuff get into our gutters with these guards on there? Good question. And we were right there watching the guy clean the gutters so we saw it first hand. Come spring I guess we need to replace these with something better. No I wouldn't recommend these to anyone. February 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Nice price but poor design for winter It's a nice design in fall to keep stuff out of gutters. But heavy rain or even moderate rain flows right over it causing puddles and more water than before they were installed. In winter the snow piles up and when it melts the water drips causing more ice than before having these things put in the gutters. Will not recommend this product to anyone. January 27, 2016
