Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pappy Great for smaller, previously worked flowerbeds or gardens
This Garden Tiller works very well for small areas where the soil is not hard-packed or bone dry. It is best suited for those beds which have been previously worked in prior years.
For instance, I used it along the border of the flowerbed that extends along the front of my house. Every Spring I plant flowers there which I buy in 4" containers, usually Periwinkles or Begonias. So that soil was fairly loose to begin with and was an ideal spot to use this Tiller.
Once you start tilling, you want to overlap your work space about halfway so that it really minces up the soil. I would also take the Tiller and poke or stab at the larger clods after each twist in order to break them up. You only have to turn the Tiller halfway for each plunge as that is sufficient for it to break up the soil. I was able to do my whole bed, about 60 sq ft, in fifteen minutes. I need to mention that this is a bed that has a soaker hose irrigation system located right on the surface, so I was able to work around that very easily with this tool as you can control it precisely where you want it to work.
I highly recommend this hand Tiller for smaller, existing flower beds or gardens.

Light weight but solid in its construction. This vertical tiller's tines are beastly, rest assured you are not about to deform them anytime soon. And if you have compacted, miserable soil you will get a workout to boot.

Wish tines were sharper. Also wish center tines were longer. Longer twist handle would help also. Works well but could be better.

I used this on a previously worked garden plot, and it did o.k. as long as the soil wasn't impacted or too dry. It did do a good job turning up the soil though. I went over it about 3 times, starting shallow at first, and was able to go a little deeper, with each pass.
If you have a small plot that has previously been tilled, this would work great to till up the soil for planting without having to use a gas operated tiller, or in a raised bed.
It's fairly easy to use, depending on how hard the ground you're working in. You just twist the handle bars back and forth to loosen the soil.
For small previously tilled plots and for raised beds, I would recommend this tiller.

I have 4 raised beds in the backyard - they were very overgrown with weeds and crabgrass because I didn't plant anything last year. I thought that tilling would be very difficult, but using this tool made quick work of it. It didn't take much force (my back and legs feel just fine!) - but please do wear gloves because I got a blister on my hand.

This is a great tool for tilling flower beds. The handles are sturdy and allows as much pressure as you want to use. The metal tines are sturdy and really tear up dirt clods and hard soil. By simply stepping on the tines puts pressure on the tilling part so it digs down as far as you want. It is really good to loosen up the dirt around the weeds, allowing easier weeding.
