Customer Questions & Answers

who makes the engine?

i am pretty sure Ariens does not make their own engines... so who does?
Asked by: jvc0
Some of the Razors have a Subaru engine. Ive been shopping for these and researching them for a while now, and am about ready to buy. When I do I will make sure it has the Subaru engine on it.

Is this front or rear wheel drive?

Asked by: Anonymous
My Model 911175 is rear wheel. I prefer real wheel. I believe I get better traction, but you'll get used to whatever you have.

Can this mower be used in commercial application?

Asked by: MowrLovr
It can be. The chassis heavy duty enough. But I would recomend finding one with a Subaru or Honda engine.

Asked by: POPS
It does not but I wouldn't want one. It allows me to speed up and slow down with ease. Very little pressure required. You won't realize it's there once you use it awhile. I had one on my craftsman.

Razor 21 in. Variable Speed Walk Behind Gas Self Propelled Mower is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor quality The repair shop knows me by first name basis now. Great features, the adjustable handlebar is my favorite, but everything is so cheep. Even the handle bars have broken on me, twice. Pay a little more and buy a Honda you won't regret it.

So far, is working great. Starts easily. The catch bag is bigger than my previous mower. This mean I can have fewer stops, but it does get pretty heavy once filled with grass. Also, for some reason , the ergonomics of the handles and power bars are not too comfortable. I am a women, but don"t have particularly small hands, but is just seems difficult to keep things engaged.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very very solid. Upon delivery on 7/6/15 I put it together (very easy) then the next day I cut the grass. The Subaru engine started on the first pull then I started to bag the front, all I can say is wow this beast manicured my front yard perfect. Well now I proceeded to the back and mulched it and again wow no clumps and one perfect job. The model I bought is Ariens Razor model 911188 and compared to my Lawn boy there is no comparison. So in conclusion I would highly recommended this Lawn Mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is worth the $$$ This is my second Airens mower...But this mower for the price is very good. The features you get with this is not matched like any of the other mowers like this on the market. The easy use of the bail to adjust the bars out of your way is the best feature in my opinion. The use of this makes it easy to get the grass bag with out the bar in your way....Also when you store it in a small shed or just dont want it noticed that bar will go all the way forward over the motor to be out of the way. The 159cc mower is more than enough power for home use....But the best thing about it is the price. I did a lot of research on mowers and Airens mowers still win me over with style, concept, and just how good this company is....Go with can't go wrong.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great mower when is works I was very excited when I purchased my mower. But that excitement quickly went away. In less than a year I've had three wheels and the height knob fall off and the drive belt fail. This mower has been in the repair shop more than I've been able to use it. Huge disappointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best in class quality and design. Been using Craftsman brand for 3 decades. That means at least 10 different mowers in that time. I just bought the Razor self propelled with electric start. Off the charts better quality than any Sears brand that I ever owned. Love the deck height adjustment system. Electric start is a blessing, especially for my left handed wife who has always had problems with pull start. Now she has no excuse helping with the lawn, thanks! Only one caveat, a little loud! Muffler seems to do little to quiet the motor to comparible standards of competing mowers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased First of all, this is my first Ariens mower. Previously, I have owned Craftsman, Toro and Lawn Boy (both 2 and 4 cycle engined) mowers. Every mower I have owned has had good points and some idiosyncrasies that could be irritating. I purchased this mower based on recommendation of my local small engine shop. I have used this mower for approximately 3 months mowing as a bagger and as a mulcher of both grass and leaves. I think I have a good handle on its pros and cons. I am very pleased with the mower overall. The housing is heavy gauge stamped steel. By heavy, I mean it is at least twice as thick as what is used on the low priced units in the major chain stores. The engine is a Lorcin OHV. It starts on the first or second pull every time whether hot or cold, has good power and seldom bogs down even with a full bag and going uphill. The single lever height adjustment is a great idea. It is the best bagging mower I have owned. The vacuuming action is excellent and the bag has a large capacity and fills completely. The handle adjustment allows the handle to easily be raised to 90 degrees so the bag is easy to remove and replace. It does get a bit "tippy" when the bag is full but not as much as other rear baggers I have owned. The cut is very smooth with very few straggler grass blades. It seems to get better gas "mileage" than my old Lawn Boy. It mows faster than I'm accustomed to - you can mow at a normal walking speed and still get a good cut. Mulching is very good to excellent. The clippings are chopped very fine and clumping is minimal. If the grass is tall or wet, it does have a tendency to leave some visible clippings at the end of a pass or when making a turn. Mulching leaves works fine. The only criticism is that it tends to blow some of the clippings and leaves out the front just ahead of the right front wheel. This is not a problem unless the wind is blowing from the left and the leaves/clippings are blown to the side where the mower doesn't get them. I have used the side discharge very little, but it seems to work fine though the deflector is difficult to attach. I cannot comment on durability, but it appears well made from quality components. Now for the nit-picking. It is a heavy mower. I didn't weigh it, but based on lifting it out of my van (fully assembled) it felt heavier than my old Lawn Boy when I lifted it to haul it to the scrap yard. I'm guessing about 90 - 100 pounds for the Ariens vs 75 - 80 pounds or so for the Lawn Boy. It also feels heavier when using it. That makes it a bit harder to maneuver than my old Lawn Boy. It is not a quiet running engine (maybe a better muffler?). The speed control is a single lever on the right hand side of the handle and takes a bit of getting used to. The first time I used the mower, I squeezed the lever too hard and the mower took off like a scared rabbit. The lever is also hard to reach and control when making a sharp left turn or doing a 180 to the left. I would recommend Ariens engineers design a double lever control so it can be reached easily with either hand (the south-paws will appreciate that as well). It has a guard to protect the transmission (good idea). The problem is that it protrudes below the cutting height. The guard/transmission is under the left rear corner of the mower. If you set the mower much below 3 inches height, the guard will drag in the turf and you lose traction if you're mowing over some rough ground or when mowing along the edge of a sidewalk or driveway. You either have to mow with the guard over the sidewalk or driveway and not on the grass or mow with the right side wheels of the mower on the concrete and the guard well away from the edge of the turf. You need to be careful when installing the bag as it will fall off if you don't get it firmly in the mounting slots. The side discharge chute is difficult to attach. Last, the mulching plug for the bagging chute lets a few clippings slip by it and collect between the plug and the flap that covers the chute. That gets dumped in the driveway or on the lawn when you change from mulch to bag.
