Last question. Are steps considered vertical surfaces for the dye? I'd like to do the two steps and landing up to the house.
Asked by: Mark87043
I think the step faces would be considered vertical. I did the lip that surrounds my pool and it adhered fine. The key is to prep it correctly so the stain soaks in and doesn't just run off.

At what air temperature can you apply stain?

Asked by: JWW
Hi JWW, Thanks for writing in! It's recommended to apply the Concrete Dye when air and surface temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees fahrenheit. Good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Can this be used over porch and walkway that has a broom finish.

My porch and walkway were previously refinish and finished with a rough broom finish.
Asked by: Smokeyjoe
Hello Smokeyjoe, Thanks for your interest in our concrete dye. Actually, this product is only designed to be applied to bare concrete and not over any previous coatings. Therefore, if wanting to use it on the porch, I'd have to recommend removing the broom finish then etching the concrete before applying our dye. Otherwise, you might check with Home Depot for another brand's dye that may work better for your project needs. Best wishes! -Joshua

Whats the difference between concrete dye and concrete stain?

Asked by: Jim
Hello Jim, Thanks for your question. I can only speak of our products, and there are two concrete stains we have and one concrete dye. Our concrete dye is a penetrating formula that must be applied to bare concrete or masonry. It's a two-toned product with a base coat of one color and then an overlaying accent coat of another color. This gives it a bit of a mottled look that resembles marble or glossy stone. The semi-transparent concrete stain, while more of a uniform finish, still allows some of the concrete color to show through which plays into the overall color. It also adheres by penetrating, though it also forms a film atop the surface. The solid color concrete stain of ours is primarily film-forming and resembles a paint in that it obscures the surface underneath. Yet, unlike paint, it allows some of the lines in the concrete to show through it. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes for your project!

1 gal. #CD-816 Golden West Concrete Dye is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prep, prep and re prep concrete I did alot of research prior to my projectand bet 95% of those with bad reviews didn't properly prep floors before applying. It is time consuming but if yourconcrete is not ready to accept adye or stain results will suffer After powerwashing ,scrubbing, acid washing the floor was finally pourous enough for the dye. This part was easy but make sure your floor is completely dry! I used a 3/8 roller applied thin coat and was very concerned as very little color showed , 2 hours later coat 2, and next am final coat . Waited 24 hours and sealed with solvent. Based sealer. It looks amazing . If you prep right and remove all previous stain, sealer etc. The dye part is simple

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paint not dye This product is paint with all the disadvantages of a painted surface. This is NOT a dye. The look is decidedly different than that of a stained surface and as only one color was used the finished product looked cheap, spotty and decidedly more opaque than stains. The Behr sealer that needs to be used with this dye also looks cheap and very plastic, amplifying the spottiness and cheapness of the look. 3 days of hard work prepping the concrete down the toilet, all because of a poor product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgraded Patio We bought 1 gallon + 1 quart to cover our patio. Around 500-600 sqft. The product itself is very affordable and easy to apply. We first prepped with an etcher and finished it with 4 coats of the Wet Coat Sealer ( A 5 gallon bucket was $120 and we ended up using about half). We spread it out over a few days, since everything needs time to dry in between applications, and the entire process took less than 8 hours.

I did not seal it as I did not want a shiny or slippery surface. The directions specifically say not to use it on a pool deck, so I tested a spot with full strength chlorine and it didn't affect it one bit. I applied it with a pump sprayer and am now adding it to the adjoining driveway. As an outdoor product I would highly recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from THIS IS PAINT - NOT DYE This product is not a dye. It is a paint. It adheres to the concrete, but does not penetrate it. We followed the exact instructions for use of this product. The finished result was beautiful and we were very pleased. However, the first time a work boot shuffled across the floor, a blister formed. When we rubbed the blister, the dye (paint) peeled right off in a large section. We scraped another section intentionally to see if the entire floor would do this, and of course it did. Behr was contacted and agreed that the product should not be peeling and that it sounded like we had followed the instructions but still suggested user error. They offered to send us more product to repair the now bare spots. We will be peeling the rest of the product off the floor (shouldn't be too hard) and starting over with something else. I'm very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend I would not recommend this product. I followed the directions and steps for prep and application exactly. My concrete patio looked amazing when finished. It was so beautiful. An the places that have stayed in tact are still beautiful. However, this product peels up in little spots here and there leaving white spots on the patio. You have to be very careful not to scrape it with a chair, so I put felt feet on all my patio furniture. But still in random spots it will just peels up for no reason - no traffic, no furniture, nothing to make it peel. The smallest spot is just a spec size but the largest is a couple of inches across. This was a very expensive project since I dyed about 900 square feet of patio. I just hope I can somehow repair the areas that have peeled. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Was pleased even though it did not have a very good review Watch the video before you start!!!!!!!. I think that might be where some people have messed up. It did cover the 250 square foot plus some. The color is a little darker than the picture shows. Not sure how long it will last but I like the look right now. If you like everything to look even and one solid color I don't think this product is for you, but if you like to add character you will like this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Way Darker than stated I bought the color Desert Oasis to semi match our tile in the kitchen. It came out so much darker than the picture. It almost looks like a walnut wood floor color. We can live with it but It did dye much much darker. No, i didnt over spray the darkest color too much, they only give you a half of a gallon of that and I was very carefull not to mute the pattern. Would I recommend this color, well, yes and no. Yes, Only if you are a free sprit and can loose control over the outcome. We have NOT sealed the floor yet. Cant wait for that shine! Oh, one word of caution... The etcher pattern will show if you do not apply it evenly!!!! I prefer the messed up look, I dont like anything too perferct so It works.
