I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

Hello Barbara,
Thanks for your question. That's right--this is a standalone product, so there wouldn't be a coating under or over it.
Best wishes for your project!

Hi Barbara, actually you would have this tint base, tinted to the color you want, then apply 2 coats according to the instructions.

Does product bead up in rain?

This question is from 1-gal. Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Stain Tint Base

. We just had our deck stripped, cleaned & re-done with the semi-transparent (in "chocolate"). They used 2 thin coats, as per instructions, 4 hrs. in between coats. It looks fantastic! It is raining right now, and unlike other products we've used in the past, the water is not beading up on this new finish. Is it supposed to, or were the thin coats of product TOO thin? If so, can another thin coat be applied once the deck is thoroughly dried out? Thank you!!

We also applied the semi-transparent weatherproofing wood stain in chocolate using two coats. I have noticed that the rain does not bead up on the wood surface either, unlike other products we have used in the past. We will keep an eye on it to see if that turns out to be a problem with longevity.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 147 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great UV performance I have used this product several times now. Enclosed is a picture from my own cca 20 years old red wood deck. I applied one layer of a forest green semitransparent color. I had read negative reviews regarding this product but I do believe that peeling only happens when the surface is not prepared right or when the product is not applied correctly. This is a water based stain with a waterproofing agent in it. It must be applied like stain - I use much more rubbing/brushing than with paints. The surface must be very clean and ideally sanded in order to allow for the wood to suck up the stain. Water based products dry very fast and rubbing/brushing is important to encourage absorption into the wood rather than letting it dry on the surface like paint. I do have a negative experience with two coats with this product compare to one. The problem is that the first coat, because it has waterproofing, does not allow the second coat to soak in. It only thickness the top layer and tends to peel. The product, compare to oil products, is very color stable and does not fade with UV light. The color adjusted (faded) cca 15% after 4 years on my previous application, which is very impressive. Oil products usually fade almost completely after two years on decking in California. The deck in the picture was pressure washed then sanded down. three rotten board were replaced completely. No cleaning product was used in order to preserve the dark color of the sanded red wood (the washing products tend to lighten the wood) for the semi transparent effect. Although the green is an unusual color (very different from the wood shade), the deck has a very uniformed look even with the new boards (hard to tell which once are new). I would recommend this product. July 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Does not last even 1 winter I stained a new deck in the summer of 2016 with this product and it is already peeling. Very dissatisfied! I used Cabot stain in the past but my deck builder recommended Behr. I'm going back to Cabot. April 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Avoid at all costs So far I've applied this twice this spring. The first time I sprayed it on and it never cured (even after weeks it was sticky). I was told I must have over applied and should strip it and start over . After striping, cleaning and prepping again I applied two thin coats with a brush to the specifications on the can. Again I'm left with a very sticky deck. Now I've spent over $200 just to make my deck unusable. I can't describe how disappointing and discouraging this has been. I'm an avid DIYer and this is easily the worst product I've ever used. I wish I would have read more reviews before purchasing. DO NOT BUY THIS. June 11, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Save your $ One post staining and it looks like I stained my deck 5 years ago. I had properly aged and weathered my new deck before cleaning and preparing it for this stain. Did 2 coats, took hours to complete and it turned out to be a total waste of time and money. Do not buy this July 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely disappointed We used this stain on our 800sf. deck last summer. Like others, we followedthe prep precisely. Not even a year later, and our deck is peeling everywhere. It looked better *before* we stained it. I have contacted Behr and will update with their resolution. July 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by One year wonder I researched the heck out of this. Used to use Cabot, but they changed the stain. I always prep my deck carefully, and did so this time as well. Had perfect weather to apply. After a very mild winter in SW Connecticut, its peeling already. At least I didnt waste my time putting it on my other decks.... June 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WORST MISTAKE EVER!!!!! If you want to ruin your beautiful wood deck use this product. Always tacky never dries. I wish i could remove it but it sticks to the wood like GLUE and feels like GLUE. THIS IS NOT A STAIN IT IS A PAINT!!! June 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent after 2 years I used this stain about two years ago, on new timbers on a long retaining wall. Behr stain was recommended by the contractor who built the wall. The stain is holding up beautifully. The horizontal surface on the top of the wall now has mildew that needs to be cleaned, but that is to be expected on any outdoor surface. The vertical timbers look as good as they did when freshly stained. Note that I did prep the wall exactly following the instructions on the stain, using Behr #63 Wood Cleaner and applying two coats of stain. I doubt you can expect great results without prepping properly. I think the Behr stain did a better job than the Sherwin William stain I used on the deck. April 11, 2016
