Planning to paint an old weathered deck and shed both 15 years old, bare wood, in good shape, just weathered. How long should I expect this to hold up before I need to repaint them? Is this good for a wood shed or would regular stain hold up longer?
Asked by: Jim
Hello Jim, Thank you for your interest in our products. It’s hard to say the exact amount of years it’ll last on the deck. It mainly depends on the preparation prior to applying the product and also the weather in your area. Before applying our product, we recommend cleaning the deck with our No. 63 cleaner. It may be too thick of a product for the shed. For the shed I would suggest our Solid Color Weatherproofing Wood Stain. Best regards, Kevin

Can I apply epoxy over deckover

Asked by: kris
Hello kris, We appreciate your question. If desired, DeckOver can be topcoated with water-based paints and stains, though we haven't tested it with epoxies. You might want to check with the epoxy manufacturer to see if their product successfully adhere to a 100% acrylic product like ours. Hope this helps! -Joshua

Customer Reviews

5 gal. #SC-141 Tugboat Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent It was outstanding, covering a well worn - maybe 25 year old deck. I used to re-stain every 3 years, hopefully i will get many more years with Deck Over. One note, the can idicates that with 2 coats, one can expect 50 Sq Ft per gallon. I am guessing I got over 80. Only, minor downside, is that it dries real quickly, do not leave any "spills". One needs to immediately spread any "spill", ala from the roller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Over for my old wood deck Wood deck is old, needs to be replaced! Saving for a new deck in a couple of years. Some boards needed to be secured with additional screws. Did NOT want to sand or power wash deck...too much work for me and for an old deck. Decided to just paint over old deck with DECK OVER. Results were amazing...paint covered boards with a thick coating. Had several rains storms and paint remained on deck. This will get me through a few years while I can save for a new deck. May submit before and after pictures when I am completely finished. Very pleased with product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It is what it is. The product does seal up cracks ok but it's a lot of work to do so. It is very heavy and does not flow into cracks easily. I brush and rolled, maybe sprayed it may do better. The coverage is poor and it get's very gummy when it's hot out. It say's so on the info, so it was not a surprise. You have to check for skippers after it dries, especially on vertical applications. It recommends not to cut it, which I did not do on the deck surface. But you have to, just a bit, for vertical apps. Fencing, hand rail, etc. What I figured should take me 15-20 gallon took 25 gallon, I'm a retired painter,(40 years), and know how to estimate. It is not a product I would use again, at the amount I used. Small project maybe, but it's too expensive for larger jobs. For me anyway.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Little Disappointed The Tugboat Brown color looked a lot darker on the can and my husband was very unhappy with the "chocolate milk" look this gave. It is very thick and much harder to apply than regular paint or stain, which is understandable, but didn't win me any points with my husband! It is still a work in progress and hopefully someday the entire deck will be finished! I hope it holds up over our harsh Ohio winter or it may never be finished.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Applied in July 2013 and it has bubbled and needs to come off Applied as directed. Good the first year. Started to bubble, and now the 5/4 planking has rotted in places. Searching for the correct paint stripper to remove this product from remaining viable wood posts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good paint I am very impressed with this paint that Home Depot brought out for consumers. The color is beautiful, exact same as you see in the picture, is very suitable for outdoor and nice to work with as it looks like chocolate. This paint has very thick consistency and there is no need to dilute; it covers perfectly the surface from the first application itself. It dries to the touch in less than 10 min on wood and takes about 15 min on concrete, and actually you have to work very fast and stir it from time to time as it can dry so quickly. I've used this paint on wood and (mostly) concrete. Advantage on using this paint is that you don't need to prime and the instructions tells you what you need and how to prep different kinds of surfaces. The coverage of 1 gal can is pretty close to what the description says. Although this paint is for wood and concrete, the finished look is better on wood than it is on concrete, but if you got a project with the two materials this paint is all you need. Two thumbs up for this paint. I would definitely recommend to anyone.
