5-gal. #SC-146 Cedar Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from What a disappointing mess!! We bought our house last April (2015) and a brand new deck was installed prior to moving in. We chose this product because it was highly recommended by Home Depot and felt we would not have to worry about redoing for a couple of years. After a few months it began peeling off and bubbling everywhere! Our deck looks old and dilapidated like we've never taken care of it. I couldn't be more disappointed. We've been working the last few weeks trying to remove the rest with stain and paint remover only to damage the wood even further. We've spend 5 hours pressure washing, three gallons of stripper and countless time continuing to scrap and peel. I"m not even going to mention the damage to our lawn. Now we are somewhat close to sanding the splintered and gouged boards caused by all of this. I couldn't be more disgusted with this product. We also went to Home Depot to express our concern and was told, "Sorry to hear that, you might consider contacting the manufacturer." I do not recommend this product and strongly advise against it if you are considering. It was expensive, time consuming and turned into the worst decision. So so sad. I could cry every time I step outside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Durable Coating for Cracked and Faded Exterior Wood. This new coating/paint from Behr is designed to rejuvenate old wood decks or concrete surfaces by covering the old worn surface and filling cracks while giving you a long lasting look with a traction aiding grit additive. I chose this SC-146 Cedar color to match the existing color of the stained railing and posts of the deck/porch that we are not re-doing at this time. We didn't want two separate colors between the rails and the surface when we were done. We built the deck six years ago and after a half dozen years of exposure to our harsh winters and summers the stain we applied initially to the surface had pretty much worn off completely. Selection: Each gallon of Behr DeckOver is supposed to cover 50 sq ft of surface with two coats. That's about 1/5th to 1/6th of your normal coverage per gallon for other types of wood treatments. In using so much product, you get a very thick cover over the surface that should last for many years. Measure your square footage and purchase either one gallon or five gallon cans accordingly. Application: Prep the surface with the right cleaners. We used Behr finish stripper and Behr wood cleaner per the can's directions. Good prep is necessary for long lasting finishes with any material. Skimp in prep and you'll pay the price later. Even though it is a very thick product (at least twice as thick as any exterior house paint) you can still apply it with a basic brush or roller. Per the directions and after cleaning the wood properly we first used a brush to take the Deckover and fill all the larger cracks in the wood we were coating. Then taking a roller, we covered the entire surface with one coat and waited four hours for it to dry, then applied the second coat. Application is more strenuous than other paints and stains because it's so thick. You want to apply a good amount of pressure to make sure that it actually gets into the grooves of the wood and not just sits on top of it. When applying, you'll notice at first that the roller does more sliding/brushing the coating around on the wood instead of rolling, but as it goes on it will begin to cling to the wood and apply a bit easier. Again, that's because it's so very thick. The coating dries to the touch quite fast, even in 65 degree weather. The surface of the deck was about 75 degrees. We didn't notice any clumping or 'glopping' of the paint in the can, on the roller or on the wood while we worked. Maintain a wet edge at all times or you'll get an uneven surface. It's best to make sure you start and complete the area without a lot of stops along the way. We used a half can on the front deck/porch and I believe the 50 sq ft estimate on the can is very accurate when applied in two thick coats as directed. If it was very hot, or the surface was really beat up, you'd likely cover even less area per can. Cleanup: The wet coating easily comes off your hands, brushes and rollers with hot water and soap as long as you do it immediately after you finish working. There is no need to use solvents. If you get the coating on wood where you don't want it, cleanup is much harder, it dries and sticks easily and fast, so mask off areas and take your time with a brush near the edges. If you get it on things like plastic siding, as long as you use hot water and take it off right away, it just wipes off. It has an intense ammonia smell, so don't use it in closed in areas. It's odor is very strong, but fades fast outside. Drying Time, Finished Product: The can says to wait 72 hours before foot traffic and we waited four days just to make sure it had dried all the way. So far the finish looks and feels durable and has not peeled off. It does 'dent' under chairs with small feet, but within a day the dent smooths itself out. It does scratch easier than most coatings, I'm not sure if that's because of the gritty coating or because of the thick application method. COLOR NOTES. The color after drying four days does not quite match the advertised color. This may have been an issue with mixing. It's a noticeably lighter shade than was expected based on the website color sample and the in-store sample that we went and looked at later. It's still attractive, but a lighter color than expected and that's important to note. The grit added to the coating is nice and will be great when it rains and snows. the last coating we used was very slippery after any water exposure. In the larger crack filling duty, it fell short. We pre-filled all the big cracks as instructed, but after two top coats they still are visible. I do not see how this would ever fill 1/4 inch cracks as listed. On smaller cracks and defects in the wood, it did a good job of smoothing them out. We're pleased enough with this coating that we plan on coating the rest of the larger back deck next spring and we'll be using DeckOver for that as well. It's expensive compared to other coatings, but the end result is far worth it. I can see this adding quote a bit of life to the deck/porch boards. We'll make sure they tint the next cans a bit darker due to the lighter than shown color after drying. The final effect is a marked improvement in the appearance before we coated it. It really is night and day as my photos show. A regular stain would not nearly have hid as many defects as the DeckOver did. While it is not a miracle worker for old wood and won't fill giant cracks, it does a pretty good job and we're pleased with the look.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected for the price, cheaper better options available! The product claims to cover gaps up 1/4 inch but it is barely filling in splits in the grain that are less than 1/8th. The coverage is grossly over stated on the pail. I had 220 sq ft to do and it barely did one good coat on that. The texture and non slip are true to the advertisement but the durability is already in question as there are flakes appearing in heavy traffic areas after only a week. Overall very disappointed in the product and would not buy again nor recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good color coverage The Deckover paint gave good color coverage on my old faded deck. However, it didn't seal it like I thought it would.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Followed all directions and after 2 months the whole deck was peeling now after a winter our deck looks awful it has peeled up everywhere. We are going to try the rustoleum product next just for this year and see how it goes anything is better than this. Complete waste of time and money. I wish I could attach a picture for anyone considering this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Coverage and quality were as advertised. Excellent product. Worked great. Use the product to fill cracks. Let Dry. Two coats gives a good rugged finish. Suitable for foot traffic.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good coverage, obviously would protect wood, however, easily stained by a single bug spot, dog print, etc. Followed directions. Difficult to use but you can definitely see that it would protect exterior surfaces. Now for the bad news...with a dog, every foot print; is painfully obvious and unless it is scrubbed thoroughly, will not budge. Simple deck cleaner does not touch any marks. Every bug spot is there forever. I spent an afternoon trying to get this porch clean and it still looks awful. I contacted Behr and they are offering a refund and told me to redo it with a latex paint. Glad I have nothing to do with my time other than redoing the front porch every week for a couple of days. Disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our `old` deck I used a brush for the under the rails and a roller for the rest. Went on perfect and after only one coat. It certainly rejuvenated the deck. Dried very quick too. I removed the furniture first and cleaned the wood with a little soap and water, allowed to dry and simply applied. I have a great deal of confidence in Behr Paints and this product is no different from all the other Behr products I've used. Easy to apply, looks good and long lasting.
