Customer Questions & Answers

How long will this product last on a deck before it will need to be retreated?

Asked by: MVS
Hello MVS, We appreciate your question. We don't have a set timeframe of how long this coating will last since that can vary by degree of wear exposure or climate. However, in any case, we stand behind this product with a limited lifetime warranty. This means that for as long as you're the owner or tenant of the property from when our product was applied, we'll look into getting you Behr replacement products to fix any issues or refund you for the initial purchase. Proof of purchase would be needed for that, of course. Best wishes for your project!

What sheen is behr deceiver? Also what floor paint has the same sheen for the same floor but different area new walkway

Asked by: Brian
Hi Brian, Thanks for your questions! DeckOver has a flat sheen and a textured finish. The Solid Concrete Stain also has a flat sheen, but is thinner than paint and has a smooth finish. Another option is the Porch & Patio Low Lustre Paint; this has a little more sheen than DeckOver, but is the lowest sheen option for regular floor paint by Behr. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

5 gal. #SC-365 Cape Cod Gray Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Behr Deckover Smooth Finish vs. Textured I live in Bremerton, WA and we get a good share of rain here. We don't get much very cold weather, but it generally snows a few times each winter and can drop in the teens a few weeks per year. It also can get into the 90's for 30ish days per year in the summer months. I used the smooth finish product over previously treated fir 2X6 decking. It hadn't been treated for at least 5 years prior to my using the Behr deckover product. I used the Cape Cod Gray Smooth finish paint on my 600 sq ft deck after sanding and totally drying my wood. It peeled over 40% within the first winter. Totally dissatisfied and frustrated. I have used the Textured Cape Cod Gray on enclosed cargo trailer floors with good luck, though. So I pressure washed my peeling deck, sanded peeling spots, and let dry. I then applied the Cape Cod Gray TEXTURED product and it's been a good choice for me. It dries almost alike it has a hard plastic or even a concrete additive in it. I'm very happy so far with the TEXTURED PRODUCT. I'm waiting for next winter to come to confirm, but I'm confident it'll old up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far it has been awesome! had a hot tub, 2 sides like new and 2 sides facing the sun were bad shape. The new side was stained and sealed. Painted over the whole tub and it looks like new. This stuff covered all the cracks, stays real smooth, and dries hard as nails. Seems like it is impenatrable, but we will see. It's only been a few weeks, and so far so good. It says on the display at the store it only covers 50 sq ft. but my hot tub is 100 sq. ft., and i also did a rocking cedar swing and still have 1/8" of a can left. Painted on real smooth, clean, doesn't drip......

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Solution to Neglected Dock We bought four 5 gallon buckets which SHOULD have done our dock, boardwalk, front and back porches. It did 2 coats for the dock and part of the boardwalk, leaving about 1/3 of the boardwalk with just one coat, and that was only because we thinned it to make it stretch. Still have to buy 2 more 5 gallong buckets (estimating from how much original purchase actually covered compared to what it said it would cover) in order to finish the job. The good: This did a great job of filling in the cracks and evening out the finish, again. The difference between first and second coat was rather dramatic, too. The appearance has been improved significantly and is, once again, a nice looking dock. Unthinned, it did exactly as it was supposed to. Thinned, even just slightly, made a big difference in the ability to fill in cracks. So I wouldn't recommend it if you have significant weathering. For relatively smooth surfaces, it would be just fine (to thin). The bad: Our dock was somewhat neglected and had become rather severely weather worn. I give this partial credit for the lack of distance covered, which is not Behr's fault. But remember, only PARTIAL credit. Even with the severity of weathering, the product should have gone a lot further. Additionally, being that it's purpose is to refinish outdoor decks you wouldn't expect it to be as slick as it is when damp. Living in Florida, we have high humidity, daily rain showers during rainy season and it is a dock on a lake. VERY impractical characteristic. When dry, it has a "sticky" feel to it. Hoping that cures after while, but after 2 weeks in hot Florida sun, it hasn't changed much. Further, we chose the lightest shade of gray (which almost looks white), in order to reflect the sun's heat versus a darker color. (Previously we had a brown color which you would expect to be hotter.) The DeckOver now makes the dock hotter than hades so bare feet are definitely out. Another disappointing aspect considering the application for which it's supposed to be for - outdoor living. Overall, I would recommend it, but Behr still has some work to do to overcome these rather significant drawbacks. Still, we're hoping it gives us another 4-5 years of life to the dock. I am tagging this review with "Easy to Apply" in that it wasn't complicated. It WAS very hard work as you have to work it into the cracks. Also, would have given it the "Good Protection" tag except that remains to be seen. First impression is that it will, but we'll see.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than a lot of people are saying... There are pros and cons to this product, but I suspect if it is used entirely as recommended there would be more pros and fewer 1's posted here in reviews. I've used this product twice on the same deck so have some experience to share. My guess is that many of the people who have posted pictures of peeling paint are experiencing that result because they tried to stretch the coverage or they applied at a temp too cold or too hot. If done correctly, this stuff sticks like glue. Here is my story... Had a redwood deck too far gone for even this product to help, so I completely sheathed the deck with 4' x 8' 1/2" CDX plywood. Then I painted the plywood with Deckover (NOTE - be sure to seal the end grain if you do this). My deck is about 24 x 24 feet or a little over 600 sf. I discovered I could cover the deck with one coat using a 5-gallon pail. Per their listed coverage at 375 sf at 2 coats, I figure 600 sf at one coat is close enough to their posted coverage. I discovered it is important to apply a heavy coat and not to roll out too thin. It's one thing to "color" the deck, and quite another to seal it. I suspect much of the peeling paint is from rolling out too thin or applying over damp wood. Some important considerations.... avoid application over a warm deck or in hot temps. They really mean it when they say 90 degrees max! On a 100 degree day in direct sunlight, deck temps can reach well over 120 degrees. The paint dries well before you can roll it out and clumps badly. Wait for evening or indirect sunlight. I've used a spotlight and painted after sunset when needed. As for 2 coats and coverage.... first coat left a lot of exposed grain and obviously screamed for a second coat. Second coat covered the exposed grain (I thought). After a year there were quite a few cracks in the deck where I suspect I had not completely sealed the plywood grain the first time. I had no peeling paint, as this stuff seems to form a permanent bond with wood, but there were many areas that had open or exposed grain causing splits in the coating. I figure this was my fault. With another 2 pails I've sanded the exposed grain and reapplied Deckover (washing the deck first to remove all dust). As with the first treatment the deck looks great. I'm hoping this time that it will last more than a year. I don't fault the product for the open grain after a year because I suspect I failed to achieve a complete seal the first time. I've been very careful to ensure a waterproof seal this time around. Total usage to date - 5 pails (3 the first time and two the second). Time will tell if my faith in Behr is well placed, but for now I can say that the deck looks 100% better than it did a year ago. My choice back then was to paint the deck or to tear it down. Deckover saved my substantial investment in a 24' x 24" well built (but neglected) deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a supreme difference in paint quality! It was time again to refurbish my Barn due to extreme weather here in Tennessee and the weather the past couple of years with extreme heat, rain and hail damage. I searched for the best possible paint or stain for a well used Barn and decided to purchase BEHR DeckOver. I know that this paint was designed for deck paint but since I have a wooden Barn, I decided to give it a try. I am so very pleased with the results. The Barn looks great and the application of the paint was very easy. It dried within 20 minutes so I could apply the second coat. The paint sealed a lot of rough spots eliminating possible blemishes and appearance. I love the color and the finished product. I would highly recommend the use of the BEHR DeckOver products and their large variety of colors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great look! Just make sure the paint is the color you want before you leave the store. We ordered cape cod gray. Got home and it was pretty dark. So we used it anyway. Needed one more gallon and it was 5 or so shades lighter. The original color that we wanted. Now we are going to have to start over again with one color or another. This is supposed to be computer generated as far as the color but it goofed!
