I am painting the inside of my pole barn. Is this the primer I should use?

The interior has previously unpainted drywall and cement board on the walls. The walls may at times come in contact with water. The building is unheated, so I was thinking that exterior primer and paint products might be best for this application.
Asked by: painter
Dear painter, Thank you very much for your question. Given your barn is not temperature controlled and may go through a wide range of temperature changes and exposure, we recommend using a flexible film primer that expands and contrasts due to temperature change. An interior primer does not have this flexible performance built into it, however BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer No. 436 is a very flexible primer and is designed for these conditions. In addition, No. 436 Primer will also have excellent adhesion to drywall and cement wall board. Once primed, you will need to paint No. 436 Primer with a topcoat. Understanding your conditions, we recommend painting with BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Exterior Paint in the sheen of your choice. This exterior paint also has a flexible film and will expand and contract with temperature change. Regarding your comment about the walls of your barn coming into contact with water, it's important to point out that BEHR PREMIUM PLUS paints and primers are not water proof. These products have excellent durability against exterior elements such as rain and snow, however they are not water proofing products. Thank you very much and good luck with your project!

can this primer be used over old wallpaper?

Asked by: jacko
Dear jacko, Thank you very much for your question. BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer No. 436 cannot be used as a primer over wallpaper. Using a water-based primer such as No. 436 may reactivate the water-based wallpaper glue, resulting in unwanted peeling of the wallpaper. An oil-based primer is required to eliminate the risk of peeling wallpaper. We recommend using a oil-based primer such as Kilz Original Oil-Based Primer & Sealer. Once primed, you can then apply your topcoat of paint. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your question. BEHR MARQUEE® Exterior paint and BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Exterior paint can be painted over aluminum/metal siding. Be sure to prep/clean the surface, scuff sand or degloss smooth or glossy surfaces, remove any chalk, scuff sand or etch metals, and follow label instructions. PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior paint must be primed with BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® MULTI-SURFACE PRIMER & SEALER NO. 436 before painting. Best of luck on your project!

I sealed and stained my old concrete porch with LastiSeal and since I don't like the final color, I was wondering if I can use this primer prior to painting. Thanks.

I was looking for a primer that had excellent adhesion on new bare wood that would stand up to foot traffic. In the past I have used primarily oil based primers due to their ability to adhere well to bare wood. I decided to give the Behr Multi-Surface Interior/Exterior primer a try. It exceeded my high expectations with zero issues after several years of daily floor use. I have used it on multiple projects since the original floor use with wonderful results each time. This product is highly rated IMNHO based on my experience with it to date - which has been limited to interior use on bare, new and painted wood. It's the best primer I have ever used and I will continue to use it as a result. The quick dry time is an added benefit to the outstanding sealing and adherence properties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST My husband painted the exterior of his 40x60 shop last year. We painted the outside of our home this past spring. We are now painting the 40x25 patio cover.... the BEHR primer is tintable... which made the shade of paint "exactly"...this primer smooths the bumps, fills the voids, sticks to and covers raw wood and GRABS the paint. The ONLY PRIMER that I will EVER Use!!!! Thanks BEHR
