I stripped the paint off my front door, which is south-facing. Previous attempts to paint the front door with acrylic paint resulting in blistering and peeling rather quickly. I was told to use an oil-based paint to avoid this problem. Can/Should I use this primer under the oil-based paint?

Answer:
I sure as heck wouldn't. First, oil over acrylic will result in alligatoring. Second, oil is a very bad choice for an area which gets lots of sun, as it wil chalk quickly.

I don't know, the instructions say you can put it over oil based paint, so maybe. Behr does have a similar oil based primer, PREMIUM PLUS® Interior/Exterior Oil-Based Primer & Sealer. Hope this helps.

Hello and thank you for your question. Yes, when using PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer with a sprayer, thinning is required. Thin with water at a rate of no more than 1/2 pint per gallon. Hope this helps, and be sure to follow all back label instructions. Best of luck!

Hello Shell, thank you for your interest in BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. While stain is not usually used over a primer, if you plan to use a solid stain on top of a "bleeding" wood (such as cedar or redwood), we do recommend the use of this product. Hope this helps and good luck on your project!

However, if you have a circumstance where you are planning to use solid stain on top of a “bleeding tannin” wood like redwood then this primer is actually recommended by Behr.

Answer:
Hi Shell,
A primer is not normally used with stain.
Stain is formulated to penetrate the wood, and primer/sealer would prevent this penetration.
It would also effect the final finish appearance.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Behr Multi Purpose Primer and Sealer I live in a 100 year-old house. I wanted to paint the pebble look vinyl square kitchen floor. I used the primer and Behr Low Lustre Porch and Floor Paint in Subtle Gray and everyone thinks it is a brand new floor. We could walk on it in 3 hours. Then back to normal use in 72 hours and 30 days to completely cure. In one year if it is scuffed I will simply recoat. May 31, 2016
