Answer:
The machine has a guide wheel that runs along the curb or sidewalk therefore, I do not think it will work for your purpose unless you have a firm curb beside the area you are trenching. You might be able to rent an edger to try it out and see, which would save you from a large purchase.

Answer:
That's how I put in an invisable fence. Scalp the route down to bare soil with your weed eater, then take the edge hog with a new blade t max depth. Should get you about an inch & a half, but still below the grass roots. So it will stay there.

Answer:
No, the blade is straight. I have walks and this machine does an excellent job at making straight cuts. If you however wish to find a machine that does carved and curved cuttings, you will have to upgrade to a professional machine. It has a regular cut and a trench cut, but these are not the carved cuts of professional landscape machines.

Can I also use this edger as a trimmer, or do I have to buy a trimmer and an edger? I have the Worx trimmer/edger right now.

Answer:
Its not a trimmer, its an edger that creates an edge by removing a small channel of dirt and grass roots.
To trim up as the edge of the actual grass begins to grow in, you still need a trimmer.
This edger give a much cleaner and longer lasting edge than edging with a trimmer.

If you are talking about a curve itself or a curved cut, I cannot be sure. It certainly took the curve of my drive way very well. It is clean and clear. However, if you are looking for that curved and carved look that professional landscapers use, this machine does not do that. I only have walks to use it on so if you want that carving cutter I think you will have to move towards a more professional Read More

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 318 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for home use The edger is used on a property with a 80 foot long driveway and 165 foot front. Great product for the money! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Much More Powerful Than I Thought I tried to save some money and buy the Ryobi Xpander edger for my gas string trimmer. It is really too lightweight and difficult to use if you are over 5' 6" tall. I thought I'd have to spend $300 for a gas edger but gave this a shot. IT worked unbelievably well. My sidewalks were over grown by a few inches of mostly crabgrass and this thing ate it alive. For the reviewer who said it was hard to follow the edge, that happened to me initially because it was in trencher mode. Putting it edger mode dropped the guide down in the back and it worked great. Much better than trying to string edge. I would definitely buy it again. The only complaint is that I live on a corner lot and dealing with a cord is a pain but not worth the $200 more for gas. I don't know how long it will last but it is a B&D so I expect a long time. For now I am extremely happy with it. May 15, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Strong from the start....but jury is still out. I purchased a replacement Edge Hog for one that I purchased less than 2-years ago that, basically, fell apart under normal use. I previously had good luck with Black and Decker products (up until the last one I purchased) so I thought I would "roll the dice" again. Thus far, the performance is excellent, but we'll see. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good household edger Easy to assemble and easy to use. Make sure to tighten the adjustment not so it doesn't come loose while using. May 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well, gets the job done, affordable Works well, no challenges. Assembly wasn't as straight forward as you'd think but otherwise didn't take too long to put together. Usage is fine, cuts pretty effectivly. Just did first edging of new sod that had been growing about a year (first cut is always the most challenging). Seemed to take it on quite well. Great results. Very straight forward use. On/off, power. Blade height adjuster is pretty simple. Requires long extension cables. May 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Neat and Easy Little Machine This edger was perfect for the small jobs we needed to do on our property. It started easily and never hesitated. Of course our sod was so thick we had to stop a number of times and scoop it away and the manual suggested this could happen. But the next time we use it there will not be as much to cut through. Our place looks terrific. You will be happy with it. I looked at other trimmers and this one seems to even look as though it is greater quality. I read many other reviews before deciding on this one and I am glad I did. April 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great job Bought this for hubby for his birthday. This does a great job of edging the lawn. Works perfectly! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome edger! I was hesitant about buying an electric edger as I have owned only gas edgers for 30 years. However as I was sick and tired of ethanol giving me non-starts on my gas machines I purchased this electric edge hog. It cuts through my thick clay soil like butter!!! : ) The depth adjustments are perfect. And cannot say enough about the blade, It is a beast!!! April 26, 2016
