I bought this to replace my old FORTY year old Workmate which is still usable but getting very beaten up it has been used so much. As one of the previous reviewers noted, it has some useful new features but the build is now so cheap I cannot foresee it lasting more than 5 years. Plastic has replaced metal in some critical parts, and the edge-finishing is sharp. I cannot foresee the bamboo top lasting long with repeated clamping - the edge has already splintered.
I do like the added versatility over the old model, but at the expense of less-durable build and weight reduction, I feel this is a poor trade-off.
I have used and abused my old one; it has been one of my great workshop assets. Such a shame the build of the new model is not to the same quality and durability. That's off-shore manufacturing and cost-savings I suppose.
I think I'll give the new one to my kids and re-make the top on my old one - out of Baltic birch plywood as per the original.

I bought this work bench to replace one I bought 30 years ago. This one seems to be made of the same quality materials. I will be very happy if it also lasts 30 years. I really like the section that flips up and becomes a vertical clamp. My old one did not have this feature. It was a little confusing to put together due to poorly written instructions. I referred to the picture on the box to make sure i was putting it together correctly. All in all, a great buy.

I read a lot of reviews and was almost scared off by all of the negative comments about how difficult it is to put the Workmate 425 together. Don't Listen To Them! I've never seen one of these before except on TV and I had it out of the box, completely assembled and working in 15 minutes. Had I actually seen one before it would have taken 10. Yes... I had to read the directions twice but it went right together. It works great, is a good height, and despite what you read in other reviews the vice is plenty strong enough to take care of all your household projects.
Don't listen to the non-mechanical people writing the bad reviews... If you can't get this assembled and working in 15 to 30 minutes... You don't need it cuz you have no business owning tools or trying any DIY projects.

This replaces my old Black & Decker Workmate that I received as a Mother's Day gift about 15 years ago. I really like the new one because it has a larger working surface, dual vise adjustment (one-handed), one end can be positioned at a 90 degree-angle, the center panel can be set aside to allow a larger jaw opening, the height can be used at two different elevations due to the folding legs on the bottom of the frame, folds easily for storage. Only one thing is missing - a set of casters that would allow it to be rolled while folded up.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DrAl This is a good product that does what B&D says it will. Somewhat surprising that they are not pushing it more in the marketplace.
The Workmate is well made, easy to use, very stable, and flexible. Instructions are not great, but if you cannot figure out how to assemble this you probably do not need it.
The WorkMate 425 would be a great Christmas gift for the DIY husband or boy friend.
