Do I still need to use an underlayment if my original floor is a commercial grade vinyl sheet floor? Can I keep the vinyl floor as the underlayment? If not can I just put the underlayment on top of the vinyl floor or do I need to remove the vinyl floor? What would it matter?

Oak Saddle 3/4 in. Thick x 3-1/4 in. Wide x Random Length Solid Hardwood Flooring (22 sq. ft. / case) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 106.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Hardwood Flooring I every Bought I bought 400' of Bruce Plano Marsh 3-1/4 Hardwood Flooring. When I opened the first 2 boxes, I was so shocked to see almost every board having worm holes, corners broken, splits in the wood and a good percentage of the tongues missing. I estimated that I could only use 10% of the wood versus 90%. The flooring is going back to Home Depot and I would never recommend buying Bruce Hardwood again! I have 18 boxes of flooring that I will have to lug back to Home Depot. I am so disappointed in this purchase!!!

It is relatively cheap, but you get what you pay for. Several pieces were bowed or had a decent crook one way or the other, or had missing tongues, or chips in the face. In each box, there were at least 3-4 pieces which were not usable, unless cut to fit thus removing any imperfections. I installed it myself with a friend who has been doing flooring for 20 years. He said its not the worst he has ever seen, but he steers people away from Bruce products. He does not like having to install it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love our new floor! We had this floor installed (via HD) in our living room. The floor looks beautiful. The installers did a fabulous job, taking their time to make sure the variation of the wood pieces meshed well. We bought 16 boxes, laid over a new plywood subfloor with an insulator in between the plywood subfloor and the hardwood. The variation of the wood grains are so interesting and have a ton of character. The quality of the wood is excellent. We didn't have any issues with broken pieces but we did have an extra box so when we got to the end we weren't left with a bunch of small pieces to finish the job. I couldn't be happier with our new floor. The only thing I wish is that we would have done it a long time ago!! I don't miss my old carpeting at all! The installers were absolutely wonderful, they were on time, professional, and take pride in the work they do. Bob and his team are truly the best!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected The wood is difficult to install because the wood is not milled well. Many pieces were warped which made the joint difficult to get close. There was damage to many of the pieces, edges were worn, chipped, no finish and some color variances were major. More than 10% (closer to 20%) was unusable. I think this falls in the category of you get what you pay for. If I install oak hardwood again, I will go with unfinished oak and have it finished afterwards. The sanding and finishing process really gives the wood the look I expected from pre-finished but just can't be achieved.

Installers had high praise for the quality of Bruce hardwood flooring. It has a nice dark honey finish and looks great after installation. Have read reviews that claimed to having a lot of waste/bad pieces but did not have that experience. Price is a bit on the high side but you get what you pay for. Installers told me that the floors could be sanded and refinished several times so they should last a lifetime. Very pleased that we made this choice.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad expierence all the way around I bought 12 boxes of flooring and over half of the pieces were short(8" to 15") long, which made it very difficult with planning the seams. For every long piece there were 15 short pieces. Very disappointed in a name brand product such as Bruce Flooring.

This floor is more of a tame rustic with plenty of imperfections and knots. Its a blend with lots of different colors and graining. There are even burls. The problem was the amount of flooring which could not be used due to missing tongues or major flaws or cracks. If you like the color and style of this one, buy extra. In April 2016 I did a project which needed 36 cartons. I had to throw away close to two cartons. Last week, November 2016 I did a project that required 24 cartons. This time I had to throw away close to 1 carton. This project was further multiplied by the fact that the end tongue and grooves did not match up properly on many joints, leaving the joint up just enough that a vacuum being passed over the floor got caught up on them. Also there were areas on this batch that were rough and grainy as if it wasn't finished properly. I'm sure it will be hard on bare feet. The store display does not show any of these issues. To be fair, the color blend is appealing to me as are the knots and grain variations, however, the quality control of this product is pitiful and selling a product with this much unusable material is unacceptable..

In this case the picture above with the dark streaks is true to the quality. However in the past I have purchased lesser brand hardwood without the dark streaks and was quite surprised that a brand as well respected as Bruce with a 15 year warranty would have so many displeasing colored pieces. I would advise anyone to capture all these pieces prior to installation and have them sent back to the manufacturer as defective. We had to have three removed after the project otherwise this would have not been a sound investment. The three were the tip of the iceberg and so upsetting to see that such poor quality is acceptable by the manufacturer.
