Hey Clint. The leader hose is approximately 42", but if you need it longer you can add a length of 3/8" air hose with no adverse effect. This retractable hose reel works really well.

Any concerns about the mounting bolts that attach the reel to the bracket?

I recently purchased this item. I removed the mounting bracket from the reel, mounted the bracket on a ceiling joist and then attached the reel to the bracket with the 2 bolts provided. These 2 bolts will not bottom out. They seem snug but they just keep spinning when I tighten them. I'm afraid that the reel will come crashing down when I pull on the hose. Did anyone else have this same issue?

Answer:
I think they are made this way so the body can swing in the direction you are pulling the hose. Put some thread lock on the bolts when you put them back in if you are worried about them coming out.

As for overhead mounting goes, it is a matter of which way will be the SAFEST way. You mentioned above that the LAG BOLTS that comes with the unit did NOT bottom out in the overhead joist. It is a possibility that the condition of the joist may be loosing some of its integrity. When in doubt, do what seems to be the safest way. Remember that this unit WILL be taking a strain when you pull the air hose OUT. This is why I mounted my unit on the wall. If you really want to mount it to an overhead joist, I would also ADD what I call "U" brackets which WILL definitely keep the bracket secured to the joist. Read Less

The bolts screw into the nuts which are held in place on the plastic housing in a hex like slot to keep the nuts from spinning when tightening the bolts. It appears that the bolts were over tightened, causing the hex like slot to open up and allow the nuts to spin. Since the nuts are still fully encased in the plastic housing there really isn't a way for them to come out so there should be no problem Read More

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very satisfied Very satisfied with purchase ! Would recommend this product . April 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Broken Parts inside Welds on the mechanism that stops the reel from retracting were not properly welded. They did not hold on the first time I pulled the hose out, which was only about 6 to 8 feet. The reel would not stay out. I took the unit apart to find the spot welds were not robust enough, so the mechanism free spooled. When that happened, it caused a plastic piece that holds the mechanism in to break in half and stretch one of the springs. I re-welded the mechanism, cut the stretched spring, and made two metal pieces to screw the broken plastic back together. I HATE returning a mail order item; I'd rather fix it. The internal parts are now stronger than the original and it works fine. This is my second reel, and I had no problems with the first one. Hint: it will retract much easier if you release the pressure from the hose first. I would only recommend this item to the most advanced do it your self-er. July 7, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works for me..... This is a good reel for general home use. It's already assembled; you just need to mount it where you want. It works well for me around the garage. If I were a contractor or a heavy user of this, I would buy something sturdier. March 7, 2016
