Q:How do I connect this to a SPDT switch so It works as expected? Black needs to be power, white neutral, and green ground... But red to L1 doesn't work if the other switch is set to L2.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi, if you only have one set of black, white and green/ground wire. The white is not acting as neutral for the purpose of the switch. It needs another set of black, white, and ground wire to be sent from the fixture to the gangbox. Please seek assistance from a licensed electrician.

          Impressed
I was looking for a motion detector light switch that was compatible with LED lights (old one made them flicker) and found this. I never heard of Hubspace & didn't know it was Home Depot's brand of smart products. First, it was half the price of the other similar switches. Second, it's a dimmer. Third, it works with LED lights. Fourth, it's a smart switch: can be controlled & programmed via an app thru Bluetooth/Wi-Fi. Fifth, it came with wire nuts/connectors & even a decorative wall plate/cover. Installation was straight forward if you've installed switches before. App installation, connecting, & programming was easy. Many options in the app that the more expensive switches don't have. For $11+, I'm impressed that it's a smart switch & those costing 2x as much aren't! I definitely will be trying more Hubspace products! Great job, Home Depot! You're giving the other smart companies a challenge!

This switch does everything I need. I set it to require manual switching on, and auto off after 30 minutes of no motion detection. I don't always need the lights on, and I don't have to remember to turn them off when I do. After a month, the switch is an important part of my energy management plan. The app is easy to use, and has features I really like, without being overloaded with useless functions. The only improvement I can think of to this line of products is more colors.

Smart dimmer packed with features and a sleek look
This is a smart dimmer packed with features and a sleek look. I love that it has a motion sensor so it can automatically turn itself off if one forgets to turn it off while leaving the room. One can also control it using the Hubspace app that can be downloaded from the Appstore or Android store. It also works with various smart speakers so one can set it up to be turned on or off using a voice command.

            This is an awesome switch!!!
This is a great little gadget to use to control your light. The dimmer switch with motion sensor can work with Hubspace App or without!! But, the App is beneficial as you'll be able to use all features such as linking to Alexa or Google Home. The motion sensor works great. Also, the dimmer option is also a nice option. See photos for the wires that are showing. Connect in to black, the load out to red, neutral (must be connected to work!!) to white and ground to green. Wirenuts are included. Keep the card that comes with it as you may need it again to reconnect or connect another account.

Good smart dimmer with motion sensor, but it requires a neutral wire to function and Wi-Fi connectivity
            • This smart dimmer with motion sensor will work without linking it to the Hubspace app, but for access to its full features—and there are many—you need the app. After programming, it can be linked to Alexa or Google Play. • The dimmer has a unique QR Code which is on the side of the switch and on a small Quick Start Guide included in the package. There is an admonition that the card needs to be kept in a safe place as the code my be needed to reconnect to “your” account or connect to another account. If you lose the card, you can pull the switch out of the j-box to get to the code on the side of the switch. I slipped the guide into the j-box prior to installing the included Decora-style cover plate because I decided not to connect it to Hubspace. • The Hubspace app requires permission to use Bluetooth and your camera, and you need to turn on Location Services. I was just not ready to open up my phone and Wi-Fi life to this app. (I realize that I probably have done this for some other app, but this is the first time an app was related to a distinct and unique QR Code.) It is a product of the PRC. • Anyhow, the motion sensing function works fine, and the dimmer and ON/OFF functions require a short learning curve. It is probably best suited for spaces that are not used by visitors. Installation involves connecting the line in to black, the load out to red, neutral to white and ground to green. The switch has 6.5” long pre-stripped pigtails for connection using included wirenuts. This means that you will need at least a 2.5” deep j-box to accommodate the wiring. The device will not work without a neutral, so the device constantly needs power. There is no mention of standby parasitic losses. • There is a curious little tab at the bottom of the device that is identified on page 6 of the User Guide as “AIR-GAP.” The note says to pull out to change the room’s light bulb. There is no further explanation of what this tab does. I am guessing that by the time I need to change the LED bulb I will have forgotten about the tab.

            Very Smart Dimmer Switch
Begin by noticing its 'smart' trim looks. PHOTO 1. The faceplate snaps off easily for installation, painting and wall covering. PHOTO 2. If you're installing this in new work, elect a deep box. The four-wire hook-up includes HOT and LOAD leads, so the switch remains energized. PHOTO 3. I eschew the wire nuts in preference for push-on wire connectors that conserve space. The Hubspace application enables sophisticated features in addition to customary schedules, dimming levels (Trim), Timeout and lighting scenes, such as Grace Period, Fade rate, Daytime Sensor, and Light/Motion Sensitivity settings. Manual dimming uses conventional tap and press buttons. A minimally conspicuous pilot light improves nighttime accessibility. This is a single pole switch. It would be nice for the manufacturer to introduce a Master-Slave combination of devices for three- and four- way switching. The Hubspace application does work with other Commercial Electric products, but the entire product line is not yet fully integrated. Likewise, Hubspace is more or less a standalone application. While its instructions can be relayed via network communicating links, it does not share a protocol with other manufacturers' appliances. Each product has a unique identifier and quick access to the program and device registration can be had via a QR code in the package. PHOTO 4. I'm installing this device on a lighting circuit near a rear basement entrance - in the vicinity of my arcade machines. There I can take advantage of all its smart features, with single pole operation, and I needn't integrate it with any other lighting scenes in the house.

            Just what I needed
This Commercial Electric dimmer is just what I needed for my bathroom. Now I can easily enter and exit the bathroom and not having to worry about turning on/off the light, especially at night when is really dark and you cannot find the switch. Additionally, I can easily have the light being on as per whatever schedule I choose and control the intensity of the lights in the application or manual dimmer. Installation is very easy and straightforward, just make sure to switch off the breaker that controls the switch and proceed as per the simple instructions provided in the booklet. Product is packaged with everything needed and all the parts are of great quality. I love the fact that in addition to control it via the HubSpace App, you can also control it with popular Smart Home applications like Alexa and Google. The HubSpace app setup and configuration is as simple as scanning the barcode in the product itself, not in the one from the box, and setting your preferences for light and motion sensitivity, which you will definitely need, in addition to dimming level and grace period between motion activations. Excellent dimmer with great smart and convenient features.

            Easy to install
Easy to install if you have some electrical background and knowledge of working in a electrical switch box. Make sure you turn off the power before installing. The motion sensor is a wonderful feature to have but depending on where you install for use you may want to set the sensor sensitivity down to not support movement such as in a bedroom. I find the motion sensor useful in garages, laundry rooms and kitchens. I would recommend this motion switch for the use in the areas above.

WiFi+bluetooth provisioning, aluminum shield on the back, fine grained controls with an app
There are two WiFi provisioning methods. Older or inexpensive devices start up as a fake WiFi gateway. Phone connects to them transfers WiFi network name and password and then device switches from gateway to client mode connecting to home WiFi router. I have couple devices like that in my house and it is usually a nightmare to re-provision or reset them as I have to disable wifi on my kids malware ridden devices first, otherwise they immediately hijack unencrypted WiFi provisioning session. Second class of devices like this dimmer use more reliable and secure method. App connects to them via Bluetooth first. Bluetooth connection is secured via time derived password (similar to one time authentication code) which is not known to malware scanning apps. Then WiFi password and network name is securely transmitted via Bluetooth link and dimmer connects to home Wifi network and shuts down Bluetooth interface flipping to WiFi connection with phone. I never had any issues with this type of devices. There are extremely easy to provision and they rarely loose WiFi connection to the point of hard reset. This dimmer has intuitive 2 button interface with LED light to communicate back dimmer status and guide you to the dimmer On button in the dark. PIR sensor on top can turn lights hands free (in vacancy mode) or/and shut them off when it doesn't sense motion in the room (occupancy mode). App allows also to set schedules daily/weekly and poweroff time outs as well as many other settings such as dimming range, natural light sensing, ramp up/down times, sensitivity level, etc. Integration with Google or Alexa adds ability to create smart scenes. E.g you can turn off light in hallway if sensor detects you entering the room adjacent to it, provided that hallway switch is also integrated with the same smart scene service. If you have smart alarm you can integrate this device as an additional sensor. I also like device construction. It has aluminum shield on the back probably to keep electronics near PIR sensor as cold as possible. Indirectly it also protects electronics from EMF exposure. You will also get a high quality wall plate with screws and spring terminal caps to connect wires. Dimmer has standard dimensions so my old wall plate that matches others fits great as well.

            Modern - Very Nice
This dimmer switch has many features. You can set this dimmer as a timer and put it on from anywhere. Instead of setting up timers and plugging in lamps, you can set this dimmer to turn on lights when you are not home. Or you can go on your phone and turn on and off the lights at any time. I am not an electrician but I have installed chandeliers and other lighting fixtures. This is the first time I saw a four wire switch. You have your regular black and white wires and then you have the green wire which is the ground and a red wire that is called the load. My wall switch only has the black and white wires. So I connected them to the black and white wires on the dimmer. I connected the green wire to a screw and the red wire I taped and did not use it. If you are not sure, contact an electrician. Remember to shut the circuit when you are changing a switch.
