Customer Questions & Answers

How thin can you plane boards with this item?

I have some nice scrap pieces that I need to take down for a project. The scraps are about 3 feet long and 9/16 in. thick. Many are bowed and I will probably have to take them down to about half that thickness.
Asked by: DeadMuleJohn
The thinnest I can get is about 1/2" as the planer comes. There are ways to get it much thinner, but not as the planer is equipped.

Can this item be affixed to my current dust collection system.?

My dust collection system is a mix of metal and plastic hoses at a 4" dia. I would like to attach this machine to this system with a hard plastic adapter and a flexible 4" hose.
Asked by: Bill
Yes. It really does not need the benefit of suction though. The blower ejects the chips well enough alone. Certainly connect it to something though, if not, it creates quite a mess.

where can i purchase knives for this Planer

Asked by: Dewd
Home Depot carries them, but you might have to mail order. Otherwise any place that sells the planer probably carries the knives.

I have on my 735 for several years now and as a bench top model it works fine! However, it is a bench top model and if you're planning on using it for anything other than hobby type work I would save your money and get a more industrial floor model. That being said I use mine mostly for hobby projects and it does the job. The chip extractor works well, I used mine without any sort of dust collection for years. I would recommend upgrading to a Shelix cutter head as the blades that come default don't seem to last very long. I have a review of this unit on Lumber Jocks if you want more information. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/100027

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice Planer, bad blades Dewalt made an absolutely perfect planer, I love it. I can't understand why they would make such a beautiful machine and then quit at the blades. These blades are trash. The set that was in the planer when I unpacked it were gouged on one side so I had to flip them. Then had to change them that day, because they went dull. These things are trash. Do not buy this machine until they put out quality blades. 50+ dollars for these is robbery. The planer alone, 5 stars all day.

I could not be happier with the results this machine produces. The quality of the build is worth 5 stars, and it has obviously been built to last. What I like: The chip ejection system. No suction is needed. Simply connect a hose and put the other end into a dust bag. The blade changing tool integrated into the tool itself. It's a simple add on, but it's nice to have when you need it. (magnetized handle allen wrench). The variable feed speed. It's really not needed, but a nice touch. The carrying handles. This tool is very heavy, but bravo on the handles. It makes it almost manageable. The robust height adjustment mechanism. Another nice, over-engineered piece. What could be improved: The chip blower is awesome, but usually in the way. It is directly above the output table and is a constant annoyance. The raise and lower wheel is very nice, but it would be nicer if it had a fine adjustment. The measuring device is a good ballpark, but hardly dependable regarding precise measurements. The fold out tables are also nice, but difficult to manage during storage because of the chip exhaust. The feed speed control lever is great, but very tight. I suppose this is to eliminate the possibility of accidental speed changes during operations, but it seems to be beyond what's needed. The blade changes are simple and straight forward, but do take a while. Maybe it's the nature of the beast, but the time to complete the task seems excessive. The machine is by far the loudest tool I own. Again, nature of the beast, but it would be nice if it was quieter. I don't dare use this machine without hearing protection. All of the above are merely suggestions for improvement of an already excellent machine. I would not hesitate to recommend this tool highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best "portable" planer made! While not cheap it is worth every penny if you are any serious type of woodworker! If you are going to be handling fine woods why would you trust it to a inferior tool. I have used this Dewalt 735 planer for a number of years and hands down it is the best on the market in the "portable" category. It's about 100 lbs. so it isn't the lightest but it is manageable if needed to move. I would highly recommend getting the package with the in and out feed tables as it greatly reduces snipe and makes handling your material much easier. Also consider getting the Dewalt planer stand to add to this beast as it makes an excellent sturdy base that can be moved around from place to place in your shop. Again save a little bit longer and choose the best, the Dewalt 735 planer! Also free shipping which is great considering the weight on this momma!

Hooked to my dust collector there is almost no dust--just a few chips that fly out from the infeed. The wood comes out very smooth, and some of it doesn't need much sanding. I like the feature on the infeed side that lets you know when the blade just makes contact, and indicates how much you take off. I've been using it to plane maple, and I am very happy with the results. I'm getting little to no snipe, but you have to be careful to lift the end of the board a little when you feed the wood in, and when it comes out, but that is true of all planers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has A powerful motor Hi I always do things myself when it comes to building things at my house. So so when my wife said I could get a new tool, I went for it man! The DW735X with in feed and out feed tables and A extra set of knives was on its way. The shipping was good, and setting it up was easy. When I started working with it I realized how good the planner is there was no snipe and it makes your finishing go much faster and I like that. thanks homedepot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The product has great features Thanks to all the comments, this helped me go with the Dewalt 735 planer with Knives and Tables. Also thanks for the comment about getting the Dewalt planer stand. The planer is easy to work with and understand does a great job, just what I need for the projects that I have wanted to work on. I will not need to ask a friend to plane my wood. The planer gets a 5 rating from me. The only thing I have to say is that Dewalt needs to improve on the instruction for putting the DW7350 Mobile Planer Stand together. My son and I found that the “foot pedal assembly” was assembled wrong. The exploded view was hard to follow.

What a difference. I have only used this planner to thickness some figured cherry boards down to 1/4" after resawing for a mantle and making a pine trim pice from a 2x4. I was very impressed with the surface finish just using the dimensioning setting and then tried the finish setting. Wow! no sanding nessecary here. looking for more items to thickness. I haven't used it long enough to talk about blade life or sharpening. Both pieces had a little snipe, but a lot less then my old Makita. Not too loud and picks up almost all the wood chips when used with a Jet dust collector. I like how thin I can plane the wood. I tend to do a lot of resawing and finish with a drum sander. This may save some time.
