Customer Questions & Answers

The range I have uses a 3 prong cord and the socket at the wall is also 3 prong, what will have to do when I install a new range with a 4 prong cord?

Asked by: Anonymous
You'll need to convert the outlet to 4 prong as well. That might require rewiring. While I'm comfortable with simple outlet rewiring, if you're not an expert or a pro I would have an electrician do the rewiring. I had him out in the new wire and he placed the new outlet and I just changed to range prongs. You can change your range power cord to 3 as well but according to my electrician the 4 prong is much "safer" whatever that's worth, my house had an older oven that has to least been over 20 years old w/o any problems...

The back of the stove has 3 places for the connectors but need this 4 prong for the outlet. Does this work?
Asked by: JONI
Hi JONI, Thanks for visiting our site! Yes, this cord will work on your range. The "3 places for the connectors" utilize the Black, Red and White wires. The White wire goes in the middle. The Black and Red wires go on both sides of the White wire. It does not matter which side the Black and Red are on, just NOT in the middle. The middle is for the White wire. The fourth wire is the Green wire. The Green wire connects to the metal chassis of the range. Use a sheet metal screw to make that connection. There is probably a hole that you can access, but you might need to drill a small hole. Here's a video that helps: Thank you for asking, -Travis

Hi Gartan-this is Sue from GE Appliances. A UL Listed 40 Amp 4-Wire Cord or 3-Wire Cord may be used with electric ranges. Check with your local utilities for electrical codes which apply in your area. See the installation instructions included with the range for details. Thanks for checking with us!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect cord Was in need of a new 4-prong range cord to replace the existing 3-prong cord that came with our range that we bought at a garage sale. Ordered online, picked it up in the store about an hour later, and everything worked perfectly. Easy to install and good quality. Didn't come with any instructions, but you shouldn't need them anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buying in the USA Standard four-prong plug for electric range. It helped to have a picture of the outlet in my home on my phone, and it was easy to order online. However, to buy the plug separate from the oven is the way in the USA. It's like buying a car, but you have to buy the windshield separately!
