Customer Questions & Answers

is the transfer switch weatherproof?

Asked by: Anonymous
Generac does not say that the Transfer Switch is "weatherproof". They say that it is a NEMA 3R Enclosure rated for indoor or outdoor use. A NEMA 3R Enclosure is defined as providing a degree of protection with respect to the ingress of water, rain, sleet and snow plus the exterior build up of ice. The enclosure also provides a certain degree of protection from access to hazardous parts and physical damage. It is constructed for either indoor or outdoor use. I have installed them and haven't had any problems beyond dust finding its way in. I would like to see them a little larger as a 200 Amp service has some fairly large cables which take up the space next to the DLM rather quickly. It's described correctly. The terms "weatherproof" and "weather tight" are not used. Hope this helps.

what is the gas draw for the generator and might I need to get my meter changed?

Asked by: Anonymous
The Natural Gas requirement is 294 Cubic Feet per Hour. The larger the generator, the greater the chance for needing a NG Meter upgrade. A simple phone call to your NG Supplier should provide your answer. Natural Gas Suppliers normally ask for the appliance BTU which is the Cubic Feet per Hour (294) X the required 1000 BTU per Cubic Foot for Natural Gas for the engine to function properly. So 294 X 1000 = 294,000 BTU. Appliance BTU is always calculated at Full Load, so the figures I've given you are for Full Load. Most Natural Gas Meters have their CFH listed right on the meter. My meter is a 250 CFH and I have a NG fired boiler for heat and a NG cook stove. So you can see, I would need an upgrade for the generator alone. ( No need to even calculate the CFH for my boiler and cook stove because I'm already short 44 CFH for the generator. ) I do have a generator but mine is an 8 KW.

What is the actual Amp output on the 20,000 watt generator

Asked by: Anonymous
My catalog states 83.3 Amps with Liquid Propane as a fuel and 75 Amps with Natural gas as a fuel. This is of course at 240 Volts. This is also mathematically sound. (Current = Power in watts divided by voltage.) They probably come with a 90 Amp Circuit Breaker, mounted in the right end of the cabinet, to protect the generators output and conductors. This is due to the ability to round up to the next manufactured size circuit breaker and the fact that the generators do have the ability to provide a temporary surge. So, you will want to size your power conductors accordingly. (This unit being packaged with the Whole House Transfer Switch - you will have to design / build your own power and control whips.) Hope this helps. Sometimes I log onto this website and the installation manuals are in the "More Info" section - other times there's nothing there. I don't get it, but if you see the PDF Files there, there's a wealth of information contained within them.

Can Home Depot install this generator? If so, can you give me a rough estimate?

Asked by: Anonymous
Automatic standby generators can be installed either by a Generac certified installer, or by your local certified plumber and electrician. The generator will need to be installed as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit, and should adhere to all local, state, and national codes. For estimates on installation costs we recommend contacting your Generac certified installer or your local certified plumber and electrician, as each installation will vary.
