Can this tool measure the dampness under a carpet? I've had a sink spill over, which ran for about 20 minutes & it ran into a carpeted hallway. My concern is that the carpet padding may still be wet and create a potential mold problem. I've used a shop vacuum and a carpet cleaner to get most of the water, but the surface carpet is still slightly moist. I live in Colorado at an elevation of 5,300 feet. Could it just dry out without my ripping up the carpet?
Asked by: Mold123
I've attempted to use this tool over carpet and the only two setting it will read through carpet and padding material was in Masonry and Softwood modes. I pulled up the carpet in the same are I measured it through and the direct contact to the plywood subfloor was off by 1%.

How close must the meter be to the surface being measured. Can an 8 ft ceiling be measured while standing on the floor
Asked by: Ivan
Needs to be touching the surface, so not unless you're tall enough to reach.

I smell mildew when going to the lower level in my home. Will this item help me locate where there might be a leak in the wall?
Asked by: Curious
From my experience with the device, I think it should. I assume you have finished basement walls, hence its not easy to find the leak. If the drywall is absorbing water/moisture, you should be able to use this device to find the dry/wet areas. When I had a roof leak I was defintely able to detect wet areas of drywall with this meter. Best of luck!

I doubted its accuracy based on some of the reviews so I kept the receipt. I called a family friend who does flooring as a profession and asked him to use his meter to gauge the moisture in our subfloor. He used a Delmhorst meter. The percentages were exactly the same. This one was priced as listed. He stated that the one he has was a couple hundred. I'd say for a DYIer it's an effective and reliable tool. Added a few pics to show different applications as well as a non-typical application.

I would find lines along my drywall that this meter would report as wet. When I cut into the wall the drywall was found to be completely dry. I bought the pin design and all of my moisture problems went away. I curse the pinless model--a waist of time, money, and effort.

I don't recommended it for flooring products such and hardwood or engineered hardwood; the readings were all over the place.

We're using this in our home to identify possible window leaks and verify they're fixed after making repairs. We're also using it to make sure the sub floor and new hardwood are both acclimated before installing in a couple weeks. Overall we're really happy with it, especially for the price. One key point they need to note on the box is that it just checks density so any foreign material is going to mess up the readings. For example, reading wallboard where there's a nail or a stud behind it will give an inaccurate reading. If you want 100% accuracy all the time, get a pin meter.

I then purchased a General Moisture meter that used pins, rather than capacitance. The meter read noticeably differently (lower) and more similar to readings taken by the SERVPRO drying professionals who were measuring the drying of my house framing.
