Hi Desperado, The Graco X5 is an excellent choice for spraying ceilings. Add a 20" or 30" tip extension to make it even easier.

Can I use an oil based deck stain like TWC with the graco x5 sprayer? Does stain ruin the pump seals?

Asked by: txagfp
Yes, just use a solvent like Mineral Spirits to clean it out. However if the stain is very thin be sure to get a smaller tip or you'll be putting out too much material.

I purchased this sprayer to paint a new 16' X 12' shed I had erected by Tuffshed. I purchased an extra 50ft of hose and the tip extension. Both add-on's were worth their weight in gold. Since I was going to tool-up to paint, I decided to paint my 34' X 12' horse shed/tack room as well. Towards this end, I bought 5 gallons of premium paint. In order to facilitate painting two buildings, I put the sprayer, an 1800 continuous duty generator, and the 5 gallon paint bucket in a garden tractor trailer. I hooked the trailer up to the garden tractor and toted everything around with no effort. It made the transition from one building to the other a snap. I was concerned that 75' of hose would over-extend this sprayer; It did not. All in All, it took just short of four hours to setup, paint, and take down. The only problem I ran into was, on start-up/prime the included screen on the pickup hose prevented the paint from being sucked into the machine. Once I decided the problem must be in the intake, I pulled the intake hose out of the paint bucket, unscrewed the screen, placed the intake hose back into the bucket, and bingo-bango, I was in business. The X5 performed beyond my expectation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cuts hours off a painting project...if you use it right I needed to paint the vinyl siding on my house. Badly. Considering it would have cost more than $1,000 to have somebody do it, I gave it a shot. Went with this sprayer instead of a cheaper one, and it was well worth the price. It's very, very important to read the instructions and follow them closely. And, it's very important to make sure everything is tightened before your first spray. I failed to tighten the nut in the sprayer handle and found out quickly that wasn't a good thing to forget, as I took a shot of paint in the face. Also, the sprayer hose is fairly stiff and needs to be laid out before painting to prevent the unit and/or paint container from tipping over. I did have a little trouble maintaining pump prime after I switched to a second paint bucket. That can cause some "burping" of paint. So, when you start to feel the pump losing pressure, stop and re-prime. Also, it pays to hesitate and take your time when painting in tight areas. Clean-up took some time, but using 2 5-gallon buckets helped a lot. I have yet to put the pump fluid into the unit because I may use it again before winter, but it sounds like that is a must, too. So, all in all, if you can follow directions precisely, you should be in good shape. This is not a $1,200 professional sprayer, but it's also not a $40 plastic Wagner sprayer. It's much closer to the former than the latter. I was extremely pleased with my results. Was able to paint my small ranch house in just under 4 hours (not counting trim work and touch-ups, which took just as long!). I recommend this sprayer if you are willing and able to take your time, be patient and do the job right.

I'm a DIY'er - Just updated my list of my "5 favorite tools" to include this paint sprayer. Took a little getting used to, and have to admit being a little intimidated looking at the various parts and instructions, but after an hour of use (setup, use, cleanup) got the hang of it, and painted the exterior of a home this weekend. Feeling pretty accomplished and looking forward to the next project!

This sprayer is now one of them. It performs flawlessly. I can spray a gallon of paint, with a great finish, in about five minutes. I did 500 square feet of rooms with lots of dropped beams, knee walls, and other details in just over two hours, including masking off the windows and doorways (new construction so no trim and ceiling the same color as walls). It clogged 4 or 5 times during this time, but was able to clear by just reversing the spray tip - 10 seconds. Cleanup took a while, but it was my first time. This will improve. Along with the sprayer, customer service at Graco was fantastic. Being a dope, I had questions and problems and had to call a couple of times. An intelligent, native English speaker answered my questions each time and both guys I talked to were very knowledgeable. I felt like I was back in the 80's when customer service was actually important. A totally impressive experience. Thanks Graco!! Frank

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Product Bought x5 sprayer to coat fence with stain. Wanted to do fast and efficiently and this product allowed me to do just that. In the past I've used pump up sprayers but with the constant need to refill and the uneven spray patterns I discovered I was wasting the stain. I finished the job saving two gallons of stain so my assumption had been correct. The only downside was that I spent more time prepping because of the overspray you get with airless sprayers but still saves time and money. I would recommend getting the extension wand to reduce the need to continually maneuver up and down with your legs during the spraying process.

Pretty easy to set up, I only looked at the quick start guide and could figure it out. I went from using a 1 qt sprayer to this, and what a difference this made. You can stick the suction tube right in the gallon of paint, no thinning needed. I had to re prime it a couple times once the paint in the gallon was getting low, but could easily be avoided if you combine paint into a 5 gallon bucket or so. A few words of caution when using this, COVER EVERYTHING. The over spray gets on pretty much everything if not covered

I was extremely excited to get this sprayer, as the house I recently moved into had about 200 feet of unstained cedar fencing around its perimeter. I read through the whole manual, and did some additional research on painting and home improvement forums to make sure I got the right tip for running stain instead of paint through the machine. After holding onto the product for a couple of weeks to make sure I did the job at just the right temperature, I started the Magnum X5 up and it worked absolutely brilliantly... for the first 6 feet. Then, oddly, it stopped spraying a proper coat of stain and started spraying a weak, fine mist. Compressor could still be heard running, but the sprayer wasn't putting anything out, so I loosened the orange end of the sprayer, gave it a good shake, made sure the tip was oriented properly, then retightened it. It started spraying really well again... but this time for only 4 feet. No kinks in the hose, the feed tube was fully submerged in a 5 gallon bucket of stain, the pressure settings were just where they were supposed to be, but I tried adjusting the spray controlling knob just in case that was the problem. Next time I started it up it only went 2 feet. Obviously the loosening and retightening the nozzle maneuver was not doing the trick, so I turned off the machine and took off the end of the sprayer entirely. Cleaned every component of the spray nozzle in mineral spirits, then reassembled it and hooked it up again. This time it just wouldn't work at all. For the next hour or so I was scouring message boards looking for a solution, while also being really, really disappointed. Staining this fence was something I was seriously excited to do, and it wasn't working out at all like I'd planned. After finding no one with similar problems, and going through all the troubleshooting steps I could find, I decided to return the thing. I ran mineral spirits back through its prime function before taking it back, and noticed that I needed to have the feed tube just exactly at the top of the bucket of spirits in order to get a draw - if it was far below the surface of the liquid or only partially submerged it wouldn't pull anything at all, and I think this may have been the issue I was having. I just had the feed tube fully submerged in a bucket of stain probably 10 inches down or so, which shouldn't have made any difference, but for whatever reason with the X5 I was using it wouldn't pull from that depth. Or maybe it was something else. I have no idea. The point of the story is, I brought this thing back to Home Depot and bought a paint brush instead. I know everyone else seems to have had great experiences with this tool, but for me it was far and away the most frustrating piece of machinery I've ever used.

I used it to spray approximately 650 linear feet of cedar fencing that was six feet tall which I recently power washed. I applied a Behr weatherproofing cedar stain. I was initially dreading the work, but with this unit it was a whole lot easier than I expected. I did purchase a slightly small tip (413 instead of the supplied 515). For my job, I sprayed 20 gallons of the Behr product over a two day period. Using the supplied instructions, the application and daily cleanup was not a problem.
