Questions & Answers

Would this work for an apartment?

I have a panoramic window, so theoretically lots of light, but we are usually shrouded in fog. What kinds of vegetables and herbs could be planted? Is it deep enough for tomatoes? Thank you.
Asked by: sunita37
If you have a small are in the back of your apartment, I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's only 2 ft. x 4 ft.

Is it necessary to stain?

Wondering what it will look like in future years without a coat of stain?
Asked by: Dchiu
We used only cedar oil. The color is very natural so we did not stain it. I wanted it organic as I have food plants in the planter, so I only used the organic cedar oil.

Can it be stained or painted?

Asked by: Grayhouse
It can be, but I would caution against it. I think it would be better to keep it natural and just rub it from time to time with a good mineral oil. The wood is raw and a little rough to paint.

Is the bottom wood? Does it have drainage holes? If the bottom is wood, isn't it going to rot over time?
Asked by: lagunahillsgardener
The bottom is made of thick cedar planks, it is rot resistant and will last many years, I have beds like this that I have had for approx 6 years and they are still doing well. I did paint the entire thing with water seal before I put it together and that may have added to the life of the elevated bed. There is no need for drainage holes as the planks are laid across the width of the bed on top of two rails attached to the sides of the bed.

The product was very easy to assemble. After adding gardening soil, peat and fish fertilizer, my Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, red leaf romaine lettuce, and herbs are doing great. I was extremely surprised that watering every other day gives great results. It is so much easier to garden while standing up. Great product especially for those with hip, knee, and back problems.

We added the raised bed potting soil from Home Depot. The veggies have been added; tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, beets, etc. and all seem to be happy with their new home. The beds were very easy to assemble, just as advertised. The appearance makes our new garden the envy on everyone that has seem them. The raised beds prevent our dogs from trampling the young veggies. Having the beds 32 inches off the ground makes planting and weeding a breeze that our backs appreciate. This product is highly recommended.

I am NOT at all handy and was able to put this together very quickly. It is the perfect height to be able to closely examine the plants and watch their growth. What a joy to not have to bend down to water the plants. I am sure I will be buying more as time goes on.

Wooded area behind my house so we have no shortage of critters that would destroy the garden. 2. Both knees replaced so I am unable to kneel down to plant a garden. This is the perfect height.

We have two - one for vegetables and one for flowers. They add a bit of privacy for our patio and compliment the look of your back yard space. It makes gardening easier, too, since there is no bending down to plant, harvest, or weed.

We purchased 2 rustic elevated garden beds and have found they are well designed and easy to assemble. A serious problem occurred when both boxes had been opened, resealed and were missing parts. Now this might occur with one box, but two? We immediately called and we were assured that the missing parts would be to us in 5 days. 11 days later we had still not received the parts and called again and the shipping department had not even sent them. At this time they said they would send the missing parts overnight. We'll see if we get them today. I don't recommend this company because of the problems they are having in shipping items.

Classed this elevated garden bed item as "Average" because it took a bit of "coercion" with a rubber mallet to fully seat the final panels. Once this was accomplished and potting soil added, the item appears sturdy as long as one doesn't attempt to grab one leg to relocate the unit, which might well crack some of the cedar panel dovetail joints making the unit useless. However, on the plus side, the liner and overall design of the bed once assembled and placed on a firm, level surface creates a nicely appearing, weather resistant, and solid bed which is now busy growing a bunch of vegetables for harvesting in a month or two!

Wood is real cedar and smells good. The panels are loosely fit together with pre-cut grooves on the 4 leg posts. That's good and bad. The good is that no tools are needed when setting up the box. However on the down side, the plant box is very wobbly, and has ZERO strength. I feel even a strong wind may tear it into pieces. You do not want to lean on it. It will fall apart. I plan to reinforce the box by adding a bottom rack. That will hold the legs in a more rigid rectangular shape, and also adding space to store tools.
