This particular post driver has an inside diameter of 2.5" .... which would be a tight fit at best ... For ease of use I think a post no larger than 2.25" diameter or smaller would work best.

Answer:
Possibly. The driver has ~ 3" diameter. The post should be thinner that that. You would need someone to hold it straight until you got it firmly into the ground. The cylindrical profile should be OK, but it's designed to drive the green metal garden posts with a knife-like profile. I would not drive that post if has the finial on top. You would crush it.
Don't those need cement/concrete footings?

Dan:
I think the internal diameter of the driver is 2 inches. If you have the lightweight chainlink pole ~1.5 inches - then yes, but most are 2 inches in diameter - so probably not
Remember, this tool is designed for solid poles to slam into the ground. Chainlink poles are hollow and this could damage the top of the pole.
As for the diameter, do a test in the store
Hope this helps

The internal diameter of the fence post driver is about 2 inches. If you have the lightweight chain link pole [I think about 1.5" diameter, then yes.] If you have the 2 inch diameter then no.
You can do a quick test in the store - maybe my estimate is undersized about the diameter of the driver
Give it a try

Really hard to find .... but, because it was Red in color ... I was able to spot it tucked into the shelf .... Not even the store could find it before I did .... Thankfully I am observant .....

I finally purchased one of these and a 1/2" diameter 8 foot rod to reduce the chance of bending. It drove the rod with no problems at all. I suppose it could be inverted to drive the rod closer to ground level. It beats buying a impact driver and driver bit .

Answer:
Hello 19and41,
This is intended to be used on steel u and t post that are relatively ridged. It has a 14 pound weight for driving in post. It will drive a rod but depending on the ground conditions, the rod may bend in the process.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 66 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It Works - Be Careful Handling It! This tool certainly made installing posts much easier. However, be careful of where you store this item, it is very heavy and a bit unwieldy. But make darn sure that you don't let it fall on your ankle like I did. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It works well The post driver is heavy and cumbersome, but it does the job. When working alone, you need to angle it away from the clip side of the metal post for the down stroke. I bent/broke several clips before I got the driving method down. I did not bury any of the fencing as recommended as I had only 28" rabbit fencing. I did buy stakes to hold the fence in the ground, but no one is digging around the fence. So far so good on that note. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by First Time User I had never used one of these. I've always dug the holes and gone the old fashioned way. This time I read the reviews, shopped online and decided to go this route. Excellent choice. A few hours and the whole fence was done. I would recommend this driver without hesitation. One extra note: Home Depot had the lowest price of online retailers. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Design Does exactly what it was designed to do. It made the installation of T-posts quick and relatively easy. It is still physical work to install them all, but this was much easier than using a sledgehammer. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy - Does the Job I'm not sure why I have not purchased one of these before. It is so much easier than hammering, especially for someone as short as I am! June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Drives it home !!! Had a few metal fence posts to put in around a garden plot, and did not want to fuss with a sledge hammer. Picked up this fence post driver (price very reasonable), and drove those posts home in seconds. Big handles even allow two people to work together easily, making it go faster. Heavy enough it does a great job, but not too heavy to handle. June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sparky I'm an electrician and I use this for driving grounding rods and works well so far :) June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TONK TONK TONK Tool works exactly as expected - it's a giant hammer formed from steel tube that slips over the post to be set, and then TONK you whack it down on the top of the post. Keep doing this til it's set at the correct depth. Super loud noise caused by the essential bell shape of the device. All your neighbors will know you're putting up a fence! June 9, 2016
