Customer Questions & Answers

One reviewer claimed it took six seconds for his lamp to go on after turning on the switch. Is this common?

Asked by: Joey
I've now had two of these lights. Booth worked perfectly, no delay at all. Throw the switch and its on. I do suspect that some people are using dimmer switches with these lights and while that might work OK it's also a strain and slow down on the ballast. Just my personal opinion. Personally, I wouldn't use a dimmer switch on any light, but that's just me.

Do I have to buy LED bulbs for this light or are they hardwired in?

Asked by: SBlack
Hard wired on a ribbon. Just wire it up properly and it works.

The light quit functioning and I exchanged it for a duplicate light at Home Depot (HD). First, I called HD to learn what their exchange policy was, and the two sales associates I talked with were unsure what the return policy was. So, I brought the light in for an exchange. After the third sales associate I talked with, and after she called the store manager, they (HD) agreed to exchange it. Thank you HD. Comments: The light is advertised to last for 50,000 hours; so if the light were on for 10 hours a day, 365 days a year, the light should last for 13.7 years. My light lasted for only nine months which is only 5.5% of the advertised lifespan. I've read the reviews for this light and see that other customers have had the same problem with the light just dying. This shouldn't happen with a $150.00 light that is advertised to last for 50,000 hours. If there is a design / performance issue with this light, fix it, or quit selling it, HD and Hampton Bay. I hope my exchanged light functions closer to 50,000 hours this time.

Husband took the cover off and the electrical box was hot to the touch. Now we are beyond return deadline for Home Depot and must work with warranty. I am afraid any replacement will also die after 9-10 months based on another review of one that failed after 9 months. :(

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mixed feelings... I love the way it looks and the size. The light it throws off is incredibly bright and white (like an operating room). Our ceilings are very high and our kitchen is small (city condo) and because of this we actually get some shadows when I work at the countertop in the kitchen. Thankfully I don't do a lot of precision cutting! We had it professionally installed and the electrician felt that some of the wires were too short. For me, this light functions best when off. Super good looking fixture, not quite the lighting we had hoped for. In warm weather we are glad that the light doesn't throw off heat. Great price and not worth the hassle to take it down now that it's up.

I hung this in the kitchen where it does a great job lighting everything. It would be suitable for a workshop or kitchen, but not a room where you plan to watch TV or relax. It is very bright. It was easy to install just four screws. This is my second light with this type of large oval shade. The first one cracked when we took it off to change the light bulb. This version does NOT have light bulbs (it has LED lights) so you should need to take the shade off, but bugs still get in there if you every want to clean it be careful with the shade.

First of all, if you manage to install it by yourself and have less than three arms, you should mention it on your resume. Bonus points if it ends up being parallel to anything in the room. Now, once it is up and running, it does not look too bad at all, even though it feels flimsy while handling it. It may not be the brightest light in the world, but certainly is the brightest one I ever had (it is a bit cold though, which is what I wanted). It works well with some random (Home Depot) dimmer which mentioned being LED compatible, although, as expected from LED light, it does not dim down to nothing as some other types of light do. Now, couple tips that I dare to venture: 1. Make a template (that manufacturer forgot to provide) of the four mounting holes. I used a rectangular piece of cardboard (13" x 9.5" if I recall correctly, or just a hair under 9.5", but make sure to measure your light fixture) and marked the corners on the ceiling with a pencil. Beware: the mounting holes have zero room for adjustment (unlike most other ceiling lights), so you have one shot to position it right. 2. The manufacturer suggest to drill 1/4" holes for the dry wall anchors - I found out that 1/4" was too large. Two of the anchors were spinning freely and I had one heck of a time putting the screws in. Would use something like 3/16" drill bit if I had to do it again. 3. If you have no one to assist you, cut a piece of thin cord and tie it to (or loop through if you want to remove it) some hole in the ceiling electrical box. Feed the other end through the hole in the light fixture used for two unused thin wires and tie a knot on the other side. Now you can (carefully) suspend the light from the ceiling while working on the wiring. This was the only way to install it with one set of hands I could think of. Overall, I am rather pleased with this light, even though it was a bit expensive.

The install is a real pain, it really takes two people, especially the plastic cover. If I had to do it over, I'd make a template of the mounting holes. It does look nice, and with dimmer switch it does work fine.

I used this to replace a standard incandescent fixture in the kitchen. I have light switches with occupancy sensors built in and they never worked properly with CFL's. Instead of turning off the lamps would just flicker. That was not an issue with this LED fixture it works great with my occupancy sensors. As mentioned by another reviewer the lack of a drilling template make this a little difficult to install because it does not mount like a standard lamp. I simply cut a square out of the box the lamp shipped in and used painters tape to tape it to the back of the lamp. I then flipped the lamp over and use a pen to mark all 4 holes, then using a straight edge I drew 2 diagonal lines from the left set of hole to the right set of holes to form an X, at the point where the two lines intersect should be the center of the electrical box. I then taped this template to the ceiling and was able to easily drill the holes for the supplied anchors in the proper locations. I was a little unsure what to do with the gray and purple wires the instructions were not clear to this point. After some digging on the web I found a document that suggested they simply be capped off. Seems to work fine this way. I saw at least one complaint about a slow start time for the lamp. This has not been an issue for me, if there is any delay it is negligible. Over all the fixture produces nice even lighting and is very attractive even in a smaller kitchen. I would recommend this product.
