Too small for a rat. Get the small one, next size up. They catch squirrels and should catch rats just as well.

Answer:
The Havahart site states the x-small 2-door trap is large enough for mice, voles, chipmunks & rats. However, you might have better luck with the Small 2-door trap, unless you know the rat is no bigger than a chipmunk. This trap is fairly small -- 10" x 3" x 3". The next size up trap (Small 2-door) is much easier to set than this one.

100% IMPOSSIBLE. Do NOT buy this thing. It's in my car right now so I can return it after work. I tried for 20 mins, and a friend tried for 10... you get hooked and want to try to figure out the darned thing, but it's just a bad design. Look for a different "x-small" trap. Maybe avoid the 2 door ones.

Answer:
It is assembled already. Mine needed to be bent a little so that there was not a large gap on one side of the door.
Setting the trigger is not obvious - there are 3 thin metal rods that come off of the doors and the trigger pad inside the trap. There are flattened areas on 2 that rest against each other - it can take a few minutes to figure out how to get them all to rest against each other.

No it's for mice sized rodents. Buy the next size up, a small one I think is for squirrels, but go by the recommendations. The xsmall is definitely too little.

Answer:
If you're asking about the "X-Small 2-door" trap, definitely not small enough to catch anything other than a mouse or rat. The width and height are barely 3", and the interior dimension, when the doors are closed, is about 5". It's barely big enough to catch a rat.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad trap and bad customer service This didn't work to catch chipmunks. The gap between the trap door and sides is too open And the chipmunks run right out. I do not recommend this. I also do not recommend home depot. Home Depot sent me a survey about a week ago about this product and I requested they contact me to help me return this product. They never did. Bad trap and worse customer service October 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Havahart mousetrap Works perfect, have used them before, never a problem October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked perfectly! This trap worked great for us. We started to notice multiplying field mice in our basement and kitchen. We purchased this trap and caught them immediately. I was worried that the mice would be too light weight and just eat the peanut butter we used as bait and run off (we had this happen with the snap traps). This trap even caught the tiny baby mice. Ordering a second! October 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good mousetrap Works pretty well, but I did have to set it up as if it was a large animal trap: leaving one door closed and blocking underneath the pan at the open end so the the mouse or vole needs to walk across the pan to get the bait. in the closed end. September 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Havahart x small 2 door trap It works very effectively and it's animal friendly, which is very important to me. The kill traps are just not a fair deal. They were here before humans and we've encroached on their turf. Plus, mice are adorable! Let 'em live, set them free. Good consistent results and quality of the galvanized sheet metal is showing no signs of rust or fatigue. I dropped one of the traps on cement and nothing bent or fell apart. Peanut butter seems to work best and try to put the bait in the center of the platform, to assist with setting. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mixed review... It caught every mouse we sent its way and now sits waiting for more. We also have the two next larger sizes for the red squirrels, grey squirrels and likewise varmits. We drive them out to a lovely field on our favorite back road and release them to Paradise....or if we're too lazy, we let them go out back with a stern warning never to return or we'll eat them. Of course tho we really won't. This picture has nothing to do with the trap, but I thought you might like to see a pretty red squirrel that needed a little help from us one day. He's gone now.
