The specs say that this is not battery operated, but has a battery backup. I assume that's to save the setting when power has returned, no?

Answer:
If you do not have a C-wire, this will require the batteries to stay running. The batteries help retain the settings, and without a C-wire, it helps it to function.

7-Day Programmable Thermostat with Backlight is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install, setup My previous thermostats had just two wires so I called Honeywell to make sure which places to connect to on the new one. They asked that I measure the voltage across the existing wires and told me which to connect to. It works fine and I think is more responsive than the old style round thermostat.

This thermostat has a feature called Early Start, which overrides the programmed schedule. So you really have no idea when the thermostat temperature setting will change, and no real control. Today my heat came on at 5, when I wanted it to come on at 5:45. If I had wanted the house warmer at 5, I would have set it to 5!

I bought six of these t’stats to control the baseboard hot water heat zones in our church, which is similar to a big residence. SUMMARY: The t’stats work great and we’re pleased with them, but getting to that point was a huge hassle. DETAILS: This model supports different temperature setpoints in 4 time periods each day for 7 days a week. It includes a feature called “early start” that anticipates the heat setting for the next time period; this feature is “on” by default. While this feature might work well if you have a mainstream dual-income household that turns the heat down during daytimes and up in mornings and evenings, it behaves very strangely for other situations. For our church, the t’stats completely skipped one period by anticipating the subsequent period by 15 hours and, at the same time, anticipated the setpoint for another time period not at all. In both these cases, the setpoint temperature was **below** the setpoint in the preceding period, so that implementing an “early start” on heating made no sense at all. In 3 separate calls, Honeywell Customer Service was unable to explain why this happened or how the “early start” logic works. So my advice is: By all means, get this thermostat but disable the early start logic, which appears to be goofy in the extreme and is incomprehensible to Honeywell Customer Service.

This unit has the features which I needed/wanted in a programmable thermostat. The unit lets you program each every day of the week independent of all the days of week. a "program" is a set of four time/temp pairings. These pairs are labeled: "wake/leave/return/sleep" if you want the same temp all day long then simply have the target temp the same value. example: wake 6:15am 70deg leave 9:00am 70deg return 5:00pm 70deg sleep 10:45pm 62deg as for any other situation, adjust the times and temps to suite your needs regardless of you actually leaving the house or not. you are limited to programming at the 15minute marks of the hour and only in whole degrees. so no going crazy and hoping for 6:03am at 69.2 degrees. BTW: * The temp displayed is always the current temp of the room. * if you briefly "tap" the up or down arrow you can see the "set" temp which is the temp the program is trying to reach. * you can "overide" the current program cycle by hitting the up/down arrow to change the "set" temp currently in play. So using our example, if it is currently 10am and I know I am leaving the house I can bump the "set" temp to 66. The house may be at 70 right now because that was the "set" temp in play seconds before I changed it to 66. The unit will now allow the house temp to drop to 66 (but no lower). however - and this is important. At 5pm the unit will resume the program and the furnace will kick on to bring the house to 70. * if you hit the "hold" button - then whatever is the "set" temp will be held there forever until you hit the "hold" button again. so in our example of leaving the house... if I bumped the "set" temp to 66 and hit "hold" then I could leave for the weekend knowing with 100% certainty the house was going to be at 66 the entire time. Upon my return if I hit the "run" button the unit will resume the normally scheduled program. * The backlighting feature is only "on" when you are hitting buttons it turns itself off when you are not. * the display is readable in daylight/roomlight even when not backlight. *The "Advanced Installation" section of manual is sweet (page 10). depress the up-arrow and down-arrow together for a few seconds. you are now in the "system settings" item "1" is system type default is "0" (heating and cooling) item "5" is heating system default is "5" (Gas or Oil furnace) item "13" is early start on default "1" (on) - I wanted off so I set this 0 item 14 is fahrenheit/celisus default "0" (fahrenheit) item 21 is "change filter timer" default "0" (no timer) 1=30day,2=90day,3=6mth,4=9mth,5=1yr item 40 is reset back to factory default 0=keep your setting 1=back to factory original. hit "run" to save changes and exit system settings. * I was fine with most factory default settings but I disliked the "early on" so I disabled it. Using our example: With "early on" active when you open your eyes at 6:15am the house will already be at 70deg. this feat was accomplished because the unit turned the furnace on early enough so by the time 6:15 rolled around we were at 70 deg. Conversely stated, with "early on" disabled when you open your eyes at 6:15 the house temp may be less than 70 but the furnace JUST kicked on and is now trying to get the house to 70deg.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Set and Forget I actually purchased this unit on accident, grabbed wrong product. By the time I noticed didn't feel like going back so installed it. Installation was fast. Setting up took a little while, but in the long term will pay for itself compared to old mechenical one that I always forgot to turn down. It has a clock, actual temp, set temp on face and lights up when in use. It also has a hold button that overrides set temp which is nice. Glad I grabbed wrong one.
