It is simple to assemble. All you have to do is flip up the handle and tighten. That is all. It comes with the oil in a plastic bag. Pour that in, add gas and you are ready to go. One pull and it starts up easily. My mower smoked for a few seconds but went away quickly...probably because everything is new.

Assembly is very easy. remove it from the box. It comes with a assembly sheet that is really easy to follow. After you remove it from the box, move the handle (that is already attached to the mower) backwards to the position you want. It has three height positions. I am 6'1" tall and I put it on the highest position and the handle was just right. It comes with a container of oil that you put in the mower. This is easy as the fill cap is on the top of the mower (no tools required). Put gas in it and you are ready to mow in the mulch mode. If you wish to bag the cut grass, you lift up on the bag attachment flap and slide the bag into position (no tools needed) and you are ready to bag. If you want to shoot the grass out of the side, you lift the side flap and insert the side discharge attachment (no tools needed) and you are again ready to go. I am sure you will be happy with this mower. I usually am pretty good about finding faults in products and I could not find any with this mower. Read Less

Very easy. I cut the side of the box. Wheeled it out, straightened the arms, added the oil included, inserted the fuel saver in the gas cap, added gas and started cutting. From cutting the box to cutting the grass(if I didn't read the manual) 15 minutes tops.

There are two bars. The handle and the smaller diameter on off bar. Let go of the smaller bar and the engine stops. The main handle also serves as the drive engage mechanism. You have to push the main bar forward and keep it there or the drive will not engage. It is very tiring to push it forward for any length of time.

The bar does control the engine cut off. I know the toro does have a feature that the engine doesn't quit, but the blades stop. This mower does not have that option, but it is a safety issue that I believe all mowers have now, just like riding mowers with the seat sensor. You stand up and the mower shuts down. I would not let that differ you from this mower. Best one I have ever owned.

There are 2 handles: the thicker black plastic bar (MowMentum Drive Handle) and the thin metal bar (Operator Presence Control). The metal bar or Operator Presence Control does not control the self-propel action of the mower.
In order to start the mower and to keep it running, the Operator Presence Control must be pulled back and held to the MowMentum Drive Handle. Both the blade and the engine will stop once the Operator Presence Control handle is released (and since the motor isn't running the mower will not move forward).
The self-propel action is controlled by the Neutral Lock handle and the MowMentum Drive Handle. Push the Neutral Lock handle forward to lock, pull back and hold the Operator Presence Control, pull start the mower. Unlock (pull backward) the Neutral Lock handle which then allows the MowMentum Handle to move. Tilt it up or forward to engage the self propel action while also holding the Operator Presence Control. Pulling or tilting the MowMentum handle backwards will slow or stop the self propel action. You can adjust the self-propel speed by how much you tilt the MowMentum Handle forward. Read Less

Germanshepherd,
The variable speed comes in how you control the throttle, and how hard you push the bar forward when cutting the grass. If you want the extra exercise and to just push it, you do not have to do any extra steps just push. Very easy to use.

Since your question is not clear, I will answer as follows for the JS36:
1. The motor has one speed. There is no adjusting the speed of the motor.
2. The self-propel speed is adjustable. When the mower is running and the Neutral Lock handle is in the unlock position, tilting the wide, black handle (Mowmentum Drive Handle) forward or up will engage the self propel action. You can adjust how fast you move

Mike,
To be honest I do not know, however, I have noticed that it is a one pull starter every time. Obviously I do not know your situation, but if you are able to pull the rope once don't hesitate to get it. You do not have to prime it, set a choke, anything other than hold the handle down and pull the rope; it really surprised me, I hate pulling starters, but this mower makes it easy as doing it once.

JS36 22 in. Rear Wheel Drive Self-Propelled Walk-Behind Gas Mower-DISCONTINUED is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lawnmower I have ever owned! First pull start every time. The rear wheel drive is a great feature. Have not mulched with it, bag clippings. It just seems the bag never fills. I love this lawnmower and feel proud pushing a John Deere on my block. I would tell anyone to buy this mower. I did get it on sale, but would of gladly paid full price after using it. My girlfriend asked me if I loved it more than her, haha. The picture speaks for itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely fantastic mower. Can't go wrong with John Deere. This mower is absolutely fantastic. I've had it for about a year now and it is great. It is self-propelled and only goes as fast as you want it to go. I have had no problems and it even did a nice job when the grass was still damp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Notch! Very happy with this purchase and with it on sale! If you haven't ever had a self propelled mower, read the instructions on how to operate it or you will be pushing it instead of letting it do the work. Very important. Mower is assembled (just need to unfold) and included a fuel stabilizer (installs under gas cap) and oil. With barely a pull, it started and ran like a champ. My first mow in the backyard was grass over 6" in places. Cut it without a problem. The only difference between the assemble pics and actual was the cable tie to hold the cables on the left side to the bar. It has been upgraded to a plastic C shaped bracket with a pin on the inside. Captures the cables and the pin slips into the hole on the bar, snaps into place. My only complaint here would be the oil. Mower uses 20 oz and the Torq-Guard SAE30 is provided however they ship it in a plastic pouch with a fold over flap. Should it leak, it will not be contained. I had 12 of the 20 oz of oil all over the machine, bagger and box. My first 2 1/2 hours was spent cleaning it off. Not happy! Add to that, the nearest JD dealer is 1/2hr away. I had to pay for a 32oz bottle of Turf-Gard 10W30 instead as that is what the local HD had on the shelf. Then the hassle of measuring out EXACTLY 20 ozs. What a pain all because of a leaky bottle of oil. The whole concept of putting a bottle of oil in a bag would be to contain the oil should it spill. Since these bottles don't have the silver seals on under the caps, they will leak as the caps are not always on tight. Putting the manual and warranty card in a ziploc bag was wonderful - I didn't have oil all over them, just the bag!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What's all the fuss about? Returned it after second mowing. I bought this model based on all the glowing recommendations. I was very disappointed from the minute I started mowing. It took at least four pulls every time to start. It is lousy - and I mean lousy - on mulching. My 15 year old Craftsman with a dull blade does a better job. It is also very slow pace - I kept wanting it to speed up but it was going it's max. I didn't really like the speed control handle but it wasn't hard to get used to. I also didn't like the fact that it only holds a 1/2 gallon of gas. Overall, I'd call it mediocre at best.
