Does Home Deport have recommended local contractors for installation?

Asked by: MikeJ
Home Depot does not, but prior to delivery, the manufacturer will send you a listing of licensed installers in your area. I'd recommend you use one of them to do the wiring, as they are quite familiar with the unit, and will check all the safety items and fire it up for testing if you have the gas in place and connected. Also, if you use their installer, the warranty will not start until he fires it up and tests it.

How much is instalation ?

Asked by: Gusto
That will vary depending on labor rates in your area, distance for the installer to travel, costs of permits, etc. In my case, it ran around $960, but I have mine mounted very close to the house breaker panel, so the installer didn't have to supply much wire, do a lot of routing, etc. Keep that in mind while planning your installation. You'll want it as close to the house, and the area where your electrical service enters the house, as possible. Put it out in the north 40, and it'll cost you a chunk. Gas hookup will vary, as well. My home is on natural gas, but I put in a propane tank so as to have power in the event that gas service is interrupted. I was able to buy a used tank and mount it near the generator pad, so they only had to ditch about ten feet to bury the fuel line. Also, output on propane is about 2K greater than the engine will allow on natural gas.

I just ordered this system. If the transfer switch is not a 200A service rated unit, can I upgrade to 200A service rated at an extra cost? Thanks.

The online literature suggest the 20RESAL is available with either the 100A RXT ATS with a 16 space load center for indoor installation or the service entrance rated 200A RXT ATS. I need the 200A version. If the unit comes standard with the 100A, can I upgrade to the 200A at an extra cost? Thanks!
Asked by: Checklist
The transfer switch is rated for 200 amps on the indoor installation. At least, that's what came with mine.

Customer Reviews

20,000-Watt Air Cooled Standby Generator with Automatic Transfer Switch and Load Shed Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great generator reviews from Consumer Reports Magazine Rated number 1 generator in Consumer Reports Magazine. Yes a little more money than the Generac and Ge ,but well worth the money. Kohler has been around a long time. FYI you need a kohler generator rep to do the first start up if you don't they will void warranty ,like all manufactures . If you are a good diy person and have knowledge of electrical systems you can hook this up yourself. but have a rep from your area do the start up . A start up can cost about 350 dollars My start up was 250. I have never had problem with Kohler engines . I have Kohler engines in John deere tractors an yard machines that are over 40 years old and still running strong

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 20kw Home Generator Installed this unit myself. Had problems with the weekly test. The unit would surge only on the weekly test. Called the factory. Took several weeks to find a dealer that would come look at the unit. I was told the problem was the fuel line. After having the propane guys test everything and it all tested good still problems with the weekly test. Both the dealer and the factory pointed at my installation and fuel line problems. So I said i will pay you to fix anything you find wrong that is causing the problem. They rerouted the fuel line.... Still the same problem with the weekly test. So i guess it was not my install after all. Now we are at 4 months later the factory came out with new controller code. Fixed the weekly test but now it surges when it starts for a power outage. Now another month has gone by. The dealer came out and did some custom codes to make it work. I was told this is required when it is cold outside. Now we wait for spring to see what happens when it is warm. Very frustrating. The unit is good but lacks a good network of dealers. Dealers only want to work on the big stuff they do not have time for us home guys. Find a local dealer first then buy what they service. No mater how good you are you still need a dealer to make custom changes to the controller code.
