Answer:
if you do caulk, leave a one inch gap towards the back of the toilet in case it does leak. That way you'll know if there's a leak.

I know this is an old question but it always seems to get asked and gets a lot of disagreement. So my two cents. I have installed hundreds of toilets and the majority of them have been caulked because the majority of them have to be shimmed in some manner due to variations in the concrete floor or the toilet bowl base itself. If it is a wood floor and somewhat wobbly itself, shimming and caulking may not help at all. I use soft shims that are designed for that purpose and cut easily with a box knife when in place, I have also used regular builders wood shims in a pinch. The caulking not only hides the shims but also helps hold them in place. I leave about a 2" gap on the back side of the toilet uncaulked so the water can seep out if the (wax or other) seal ever fails. Having said the above, that doesn't mean caulking is always necessary for stability, but some plumbing codes require caulking or a watertight seal. As a plumber, I hate it when I run across a toilet that I have to pull that has been grouted in place, latex based caulking removes easily with a razor blade paint scraper. The more you are trying to hide the more caulking required and the more difficult to make it look like it isn't even there. I also use clear caulking if I am not trying to hide the shims. Read Less

Answer:
Even though it is not required, I always lay a bead of clear latex around the base just to keep unwanted water and urine from seeping under it. Use a wet rag and remove all but a fine bead with your finger and you don't notice it. It takes all of 5 minutes and may eliminate unwanted odors.

Answer:
If you mount the base correctly to the wax ring then there is no need for any caulk. Caulk would only help keep gases from escaping from underneath the base but if you are getting gases then you mounted it to the wax ring wrong or you are using the wrong size wax ring. Of course, if it makes you happy feel free to caulk away.

No, caulk is not required and usually only makes the toilet look messy. You can caulk if you like that look, but professionals do not caulk toilets to the floor.

Dual flush toilets normally have a flush button on top of the tank.
Press one side and you get a full flush for solids. Push the other
side and you flush with only 1 gallon of water for liquid waste.

SO much better than our old toilet! I really think this is the best one out there for the money and the extra height for a guy that's close to 6'2" is very noticeable and adds to comfort. Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 316 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install, saves water, very quiet, looks great It came with all the parts, but I did buy a better wax ring with a rubber collar. The tank does not have holes for the bolts that hold it to the bowl. It has a metal bracket on the bottom that holds the bolts, so the chance of leaks is greatly reduced. THe tank to bowl gasket is wide and matches the gasket fastened to the tank. THe seat was easy to bolt to the bowl too, and comes off easily for cleaning. THe flush handle takes just a quick push for yellow water. Hold the handle a half second for a greater amount of flush water. Fills fast and quietly. Looks beautiful! THe extra height is nice as I am tall. The flush parts in the tank are all assembled and ready to use. You can adjust the water level by simply turning a knob. July 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No complaints here! My brother replaced my 35 yr. old harvest gold toilet with this shiny new white one and it was a happy day for me! The comfort height and seat were so much more comfortable than the old one and there is no shifting of the seat at all. The smaller tank system is amazingly more efficient than before and it flushes with good power and saves so much soft water. It was easy to install but we did mess up the first wax seal and replaced it with a better one that had the funnel thingy that fit in the hole. I just love it and next to go will be the harvest gold tub. July 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed in the product and even more disappointed with Koher customer service I purchased this toilet to replace an existing toilet. Not long after I installed the toilet it started flushing erratically. I tried changing the batteries figuring they might be low on charge. This seemed to work for about a week, but then the erratic flushing began again. So I changed the batteries again, this time it only took three days for the problem to reappear. I would have to remove the batteries altogether to get the toilet to quit flushing. I decided to call Kohler's customer service to see if I could get an answer why the toilet flushed erratically. Upon reaching Kohler customer service I was told they were to busy to take my call and a recorded message gave me a webpage, that did not work, to contact. I can not believe that Kohler does not have better service. I will not be buying or recommending their products in the future. July 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by simple installation. low volume flush, would recommend. had a cracked tank on existing 25 year old toilet. Decided on replacing the entire unit. Was a surprise job, so, I didn't really do any homework on best toilet to replace it with. Actually purchased the toilet based on price and availability. Simple installation. All parts were in the box. higher seat than most, which is a plus. prefer the "oval" to the oblong as they seem to use the space better. would highly recommend. July 19, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome flush! I had a running toilet, wasting water. I went to get a new one and this is amazing! Great flushing power and water flow is perfect. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kohler toilet review Great toilet - has a quick flush and uses little water. We actually bought two to replace our upstairs and downstairs toilets. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great Nice height, still a fan of round. This is our second toilet purchase in the past two months we are remodeling and replacing toilets that are 22 years old but still working. However, these use a lot less water and the pressure is great. However, It is ridiculous that all the companies put in PLASTIC toilet seats. I immediately ordered a wood one from Amazon with a soft close and it is very nice. Our other one is the elongated one and it takes up space and not as comfortable as the round. June 28, 2016
