Heck no! It can't even correctly read the temp on the surface of the concrete slab.

Answer:
No. There must be an unobstructed line of site between the scanner and the object whose temperature is desired. It could show you warm (probably by several degrees) spots in the slab if that might be helpful.

I'm a physical chemist by training. Without a set of standard temperature blocks to check against (as in liquid and solid measures), the above generalization is about as good as can be done relative to accuracy. I'd buy one again and I've bought them as gifts for others. Read Less

Answer:
No, it cannot read air temperature directly, but you can shoot a surface that may have the same temperature. A table in a shade area, interior wall, or supply air grill for example.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for the money, highest temperature range below $200 Used for determining exhaust pipe temperatures for catalytic converter. Only meter with high enough range. Worked better than the thermocouple. July 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing and reliable I recommend this tool because of its price and measurement accuracy July 19, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Normally Klein is the way to go, but... Simple review. At 4 feet away, the laser was more than 6 inches off. If you looked down the one i returned like a gun, shows how far off the laser is. I wonder how accurately adjusted the IR temp reader is? Temps not accurate on multiple surfaces, reflective and not. A Klein tool should never be of this poor quality. I normally count on their quality, hoping this slipped through the cracks in quality control. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Best I had been looking at a much cheaper IRT for several months but I was unaware that Klein made one. When I found this at Home Depot, I knew immediately that my search had ended. Klein tools are simply the best, and this gun is no exception. The price is higher but you pay for quality. I highly recommend it. It is fast, accurate, and well built. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hot item! Not only you can check temperatures on items but cats love it as a toy! December 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed A handful of features made this tool perfect for my application. The peak hold was the key feature. I was able to scan 60 points quickly and then go back to hot spots if max temp was above the acceptable range. The device can sit for minutes without shutting off, that was helpful to me. The fabric sleeve for it fits great. September 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Innacurate This is an expensive and horribly inaccurate infrared thermometer. The stated margin of error in the manual is +/- 4°F which is too much anyway, but the reality is much worse than that. I calibrated it against a NIST traceable thermometer and it was 12°F off. Even if you don't care about accuracy this is still not a good value as you can get one of comparable quality and accuracy from online retailers for $10-12 delivered. May 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works really well I needed to find out where the heat was getting into my attic and causing ice dams. Saw the poor reviews of the cheapie versions of this kind of product and decided to go with a brand I trust. It has worked reliably for the 2 or 3 weeks I have owned it. Measurements are fast and repeatable. Glad I spent the money on a quality tool. February 25, 2015
