Product Overview

The Non-contact Voltage Tester lets you detect low voltage in security, entertainment, communications, environmental control and irrigation systems. Its CAT IV 1000 Volt rating provides expanded operation and protection. The lightweight, durable polycarbonate plastic resin construction and pocket clip make it convenient for on the job use.

  • Automatically detects and indicates both low voltage (12-48V AC) and standard voltage (48-1000V AC) allowing broad application
  • Non-contact detection of standard voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, outlets and wires
  • High intensity, bright green LED indicates the tester is operational and aids in illuminating the workspace
  • When voltage is detected, a high intensity, bright red LED illuminates and a warning tone sounds

Customer Questions & Answers

What is the blue light for?

Asked by: Tipsy
The blue light is for low voltage warning. It will beep in a red color light if there is a voltage anywhere from 12-48 volts detected.

Dual Range Non-Contact Voltage Tester is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Klein Dual Range Non-Contact Voltage Tester Another great product from Klein. I like this one since it has two modes. The high intensity mode is Blue LED, and when voltage is detected, a high intensity, bright red LED illuminates and a warning tone sounds. In that mode it is sensitive and will sense it earlier than the other other mode. If you looking for power in wall or lower voltage you would use this mode. The lower intensity mode is Green LED, and when voltage is detected, a high intensity, bright red LED illuminates and a warning tone sounds. I use the lower intensity to check the wires. On the high intensity It may give a fault reading if it's too close to other wires. It can be easily with from one mode to another. You also have an option to turn the sound on or off. The voltage tester sense voltage from 12V to 1000V. It comes with two (2) AAA batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves me time and time again An absolute must have for any electrical work. Simple to use, easy to carry everywhere with you and to use on every wire. I love that it switches off automatically, to save the battery. Since getting this, I've changed about 40 outlets and light-switches without a shock. The dual voltage is simple, as I show in my video it's very easy to test either a low or regular voltage wire. Regarding the comments from other reviewers about this being highly sensitive, as I mentioned in my video you can switch the low voltage alert off (so it'll only alert at > 48V), and even with that, yes, in a busy box you do need to be conscious of which direction you're bringing the tester in from, and sometimes you need to pull a wire aside to be sure you know which one is hot. But honestly I'd rather that small inconvenience than having it NOT alert on a hot wire ever.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK, but the sensitivity is the worst of both worlds. It is rugged. I like the light and sound activation. It has two sensitivity settings. In low sensitivity, you have to be touching the wire’s insulation or very close (under an 1/8 inch) before it goes off. This setting isn't very reliable. It sometimes failed to go off when touching a hot wire. The high sensitivity mode is almost too sensitive. It goes off about one to two feet from a hot wire. This might be useful for finding a wire in a wall. Complaints: I wish it had a medium sensitivity mode that worked within an inch of the wire and was reliable. And this tester sometimes locked into low-sensitivity mode, which wouldn't be bad if it were more reliable. I had to remove the batteries to get it to go back to sensitivity switching. Yes, I tried it with a new set of batteries. I might have a defective tester. This would be a great tester if it worked a little more reliably.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Works great. Just maybe a little too sensitive for my taste. Especially if there are multiple wire you are trying to check.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great non contact diagnostic tool Having 3 different light colors makes it simple to see if it is on, responding to voltage, or turning off. Having 2 different red signals for different voltage levels is genius. I can see whether that white wire is a neutral (w/flashing red) or a second pole on a 208VAC (w/solid red). The pocket clip actually holds the weight of the tester. The on/off button does not require 2nd hand to turn it on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy for the money I'm not an electrical guru but I have to say this tool is easy to use and vital, especially during a power outage. I used it to test outlets to make sure I was turning on the right circuits. You can also test it on wires to see if a particular line is hot. Great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every homeowner should have one This is one of those tools that now that I have one, I wonder why I waited so long to acquire it. I’ve battled through minor electrical work for years never believing I needed a voltage tester. I would try to problem solve through trial and error. Not very smart or efficient. This tester has two modes, one which is great for testing lower voltage, the second for testing for voltage greater than 48v (although both settings will detect anything > 48v). I found this useful (and accurate) when testing for my lower-voltage LED wiring. A great bonus to the more sensitive “NCVT-2” mode is that it easily detects wiring in walls. While I was not able to pinpoint exactly where wires were located in the walls with this setting, the feedback from the unit got me close enough to know where I should (and shouldn’t) make holes. It also works much better than the built-in voltage finder in my stud-finder. The unit appears to be rugged, and is the size and weight of a stubby, short pen. The size and simplicity make this an item to just always have handy in the toolbox. It’s so simple to use, I am confident I can pull it out and six months and not have to take a refresher course with complex directions like with other more complex voltage testers on the market. Overall it is a great, simple tool everyone should have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the CE and the AW Sperry Tester is rugged and has a good feel in the hand. Signals are clear and audible. This is a must for any electrician pouch.
