On low, this is the loudest house fan I have ever heard! Unbelievable! Higher settings are more in the ballpark of other fans. But do not count on low being quiet at all! I returned mine.

Answer:
The short answer is No, it is not as quiet as they advertise...but it has a pleasant "white noise". We actually buy these fans specifically for their "white noise" and use them for sleeping. We sleep with it on the highest setting to drown out traffic noises and dogs. It pushes a lot of air and is great for air circulation and cooling. We've bought 4 of them over the years and won't buy any other fan.

No, not particularly noisy. You have to expect some noise. I don't think you would have to turn your tv up to hear it when the fan it set to low.

The lower setting is relatively quiet -- we leave it at that speed most of the time. Higher speeds do get quite a bit louder. Also depends on where it is in relation to yourself. Ours is mounted in a window to pull in fresh air.

The fan is not water proof. So do not place the unit in a window. If water gets into the fan it will short out and cause a possible fire.

Maybe this is for the guy that bought an RV, set the cruise control, and got up from the driver's seat to make a cup of coffee in the kitchen. He thought that the cruise control would drive the RV for him. There is no need for me to tell you what happened. They are out there, they are among us, and they breed.

I assume the manufacturer states do not put in a window for liability reasons. It is up to you if you want to put in a window and accept any liability (i.e falling in our out, burglars pushing it in and entering, kids playing around the fan, or the fan pulling in rain water, etc...).

I suspect the advisory is because the fan is not weather/moisture proof, nor does it have any sort of mounting hardware or brackets. It's primarily intended to sit on the floor and more air around. 20 in. 3-Speed Box Fan is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 470.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Fans I got these two box fans along with two Lasko16 in. Oscillating Stand Fans. I left the front guards off of these also and there is more air flow. I put two boards across the opening to my attic and laid one fan on there to pull the hot air up and out of the house, which also helps to cut down on some of the heat in the attic. (No I am not a rich person who has $5,000.00+ just sitting around to pay for central air; and the electricity to run that would be prohibitive.) These are also made of all plastic, so again, I don't think they will last long. With a little care, I do expect them to last for at least five years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A decent, powerful fan. Well, this one certainly is NOT under powered, by any stretch. It has 3 settings, 3 (high), 2 (medium), and 1 (low). The 1 (low), would at least be a medium, if not a higher setting, on most fans, as the fan is powerful, and moves a lot of air, but ya', is loud, as others have indicated (on high, it sounds almost like a small aircraft's engines warming up for take off, :). That said, the fan is great for what I use it for, which is blowing cold air into the house, during Summer mornings and evenings. It's also good for any task, where you'd want to blow air, in order to dry something out. For the price, it's a good fan, but if you're looking for a quiet one, keep looking.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Buy two It's a bit lite/plastic for my taste and tips over really easy. For $17 it's a good value. You can purchase the optional protection plan for what you could buy 2 additional fans for so if you are worried about it quitting just buy two and you will spend less in the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice fan for the money When I am working on engines in my garage, I can count on this fan to keep me cool. Here are some pro's and con's: PROS: -Quiet. (On the lowest [1st] setting, its is not as loud as people say) -Cheap. -Moves air nicely and keeps me cool. CONS: -For more air movement, you may need to step up to a high-velocity fan. -Not for use on docks or outdoor open spaces because it is not metal. I recommend this for any homeowner or worker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good price and quality This fan does what it should. Move air. The price is less than what I paid for a similar product 10 years ago. It seems rugged in design. The only thing that I would change in the design is a lower RPM on the #1 speed to make it quieter.
Date published: 2016-08-30
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Roars like a prop airplane! The fan moves air OK. But my old fan from HD was whisper quiet on low. These Lasko fans even on low sound like a propeller airplane, roaring so loud that you do not want this in the bedroom while trying to sleep. Had I known, I would have kept my old fan and tried to repair it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a Fan of this fan I mean really...it's an inexpensive fan, it blows air, what more do I need? (Besides working a/c in my upstairs....) It does sound a bit like it's going to take off, but I expected that given that it is basically a caged airplane propeller. I like the handle so I can easily carry it with me from sweltering room to sweltering room, it's lightweight so I won't drop it on my foot (hopefully) and did I mention it blows air. YAY

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A FAN OF LASKO This new Lasko box fan is replacing another identical Lasko that lasted for over 12 years. It was left behind when I recently moved 40 miles. The carrying handle on that one was broken and the support feet weren't usable, but it was quiet as a whisper. This new Lasko, on the lowest speed, is similar to the highest speed on the old one, and has a more intense sound, but does the job above and beyond. Also, the front plastic face guard is more concave than normal but does not vibrate.
